The new Penitent Engine looks AMAZING.
Can't wait to see the pricing on the box. These are the best models of 8th IMO.

I agree. Is very, very "40k" in the way I love. I was afraid they would not do something this metal with a new line, but they did it.

Generic characters disappearing? Elite units of your army losing options and customizations? No longer finding that motivation to convert?
Your army could suffer Post-Chapterhouse Stress Disorder (PCSD)! If you think that your army is suffering one or more of the aforementioned symptoms, call us at 789-666-1982 for a quick diagnosis! |

I appreciate the actual model shots because it does a -lot- to help sell me on the new model and the small design changes. The renders just don't do the models justice.

This should be stressed. People too easily jump at conclusions only seeing the renders, IMHO.

Even then, the studio paint jobs (which are pretty low contrast and designed to be show off the sculpt more than the paint job) mean the models will look even better in person than they do on the website.

I fully admit, give me five years and a graduate level education in model painting, and I still won't be able to make my models look that good. But I really do love the aesthetic style. The Mise en Scen is perfect. Not mere "nuns with guns", they have a svelte, yet dangerous look. It sorta looks like they got "primaris'ed" almost.

The old models came out in 1998 (with some coming out a couple years prior). If the aesthetic didn't update a bit with that I'd be a bit worried.

So, odd question:
Wasn't the Penitent engine a Sister that failed something awful? Not saying that thing isn't female, but unless GW altered their "PG 13" rating, I'm saying that's a dude.
Also, it looks WAAAAY more....penitent. He's really getting punished for not singing loud enough in church. The old one just seems to be a white robed sister driving her Mecha.

I find it hard to believe that the same studio that put out that gak Shrike model designed these beautiful sisters models.
I was on the fence about starting a new army but if I can get any $$ for my mini-marines I'm going to turn that shelf space into new sisters. They are so good looking.
My only issue is the white looks sooooo good on the model but it is damned near impossible for me to paint that cleanly without 40000 thin coats and ain't nobody got time for that.

Penitent Engines carry criminals so hopped up on trugs and mental torture that they seek death in combat versus another moment of living. They aren't Sisters that failed, they're the worst heretics the Imperium can offer.
Sisters who fail tend to become Repentia who seek redemption through martyrdom, while the Penitent Engines are more like people seeking death to escape the pain of living strapped to that thing.

Well, one's a Dreadnought retrofit that exposes its expensive and rare occupant to enemy fire for no good reason, while the other's a mass-produced vehicle that exposes its condemned occupant to enemy fire with the intent to die and religious conviction that they'll be protected if they're worthy, so it's a bit apples and oranges.

You're thinking of Repentia. The Penitent Engine is crewed by either a heretic who has renounced their heresy, or someone in the Ecclesiarchy's service (which could include Sisters) who did something so bad that any other punishment would be insufficient.
Edit: Oops, beaten to it.

I'd argue the Dreadnought was the retrofit of the power loader. The Imperium is built almost entirely on the STCs of the DAoT and I can't imagine how advanced we were then would need a life support coffin strapped to a power loader frame (seems like something the Emperor came up with to keep using the veterans as long as possible by allowing them to continue to stay sharp by experiencing new conflicts while passing down their wisdom to newer Astartes).

I really get the sense that they aim models at different target markets. Like I was looking at the Primaris range and generally rolling my eyes, but trying to get what it was going for. And they look like they're aimed at a younger crowd and they're just going for broad strokes sci-fi stuff. And it's fine, but not to my taste.
But just when I was questioning the studio artists a bit, I looked at some of the recent Slaneesh releases, like the Fiends and the KoS. And they're just gorgeous sculpts, hands down. The recent Chaos Marines are great, even if they're boxed in a really irritating way (without options). Like GW makes some really awesome stuff.
So I just think they conscientiously aim different lines in different directions, to throw as wide a net as possible. I wonder how big their sculpting staff is.

I should point out that they're the worst who want redemption. Those who don't want redemption are usually just killed off.

So, from Lexicanum:
"Those condemned to pilot a Penitent engines are often individuals who were once seen as pious by the Ecclesiarchy, such as Priests or Battle Sisters. As a result, the Sisters of Battle consider it a sacred duty to witness these great machines in combat, observing the actions of their fallen brethren as they atone for their sins.[1]"

Correct. Also thought I'd add (just in case there's any doubt) that one of the two pilots in the original kit was male. I suspect this box (or at least the full kit release box) will contain a female pilot as well. If they release the new PE's in sets of 3 like they did for Fiends of Slaanesh, we will only enough pilots for the three vehicles, but we'd get two of one and one of the other.

Penitente engines are for both everyone to ride, so having the male model in front is ok.
I like this model a lot, but I don't think everything imperium should be like so. Imperium has enough factions to be able to create different aestetics within itself. I'm more confortable with the most fanatical factions to be more gothic, as opposed to others.

I agree with this. Marines are supposed to be the most removed from regular day to day running of the Imperium so it fits they'd fit the asthetic the least.

I love the fact that it speaks to the idea, that the Sisters are not nice. We are still dealing with a horrifically everything-phobic, slavery based organization that promotes religious zealotry and derides thought.
They represent everything the Emp fought against. This is not the protector of humanity, this is the warped by product of too much religion.
