I bought a death guard book and A LOT of the gak in the book is just plain wrong when it comes to numbers....isnt that like the point of the book? Is there anywhere i can find the correct cost of units/weapons etc......Also i watched a few older battle reports and saw Death Guard had a "Feel No Pain" ruling but i see that no where in my book??? I read the FAQ stating that FNP and DR are pretty much the same thing, but still? Any help is welcome, thanks!

Which "death guard book" exactly did you buy? I would assume it's the 8th edition codex since that was the first stand-alone Death Guard book, but just double checking. Is it this one? https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Codex-Death-Guard-hb-2017-eng?_requestid=5380478 The points costs are wrong because GW update their points costs in Chapter Approved (yes, you have to buy that one too). There is also the FAQ for the Death Guard codex you need to download from their website. https://www.warhammer-community.com/faqs/ The printed books are pretty much not worth the paper they are printed on since half of it is invalidated by errata. "Feel No Pain" is the name of a rule from previous editions. Death Guard's version of the rule is now called Disgustingly Resilient. Which FAQ are you reading? Are you sure you've not gotten old edition rules?

I was consulting both books lol. I just bought the new one and was looking through and found out through the online FAQ that a lot of it is just plain wrong. Thanks for the help! For points clarifications, you might investigate some army builder apps. Battle Scribe seems like a popular choice...

Yeah, don't try and use the books for points costs. It's simply not viable.

For point costs, battlescribe is your best friend. As for rules, there are some problems in battlescribe, but not a lot. For rules, keep your printed codex and make sure you know your factions FAQ/Errata, then make a note of it on the very few instances battlescribe is wrong. As an aside, as "infinite" rolls is actually impossible even if the FAQ "allows" it, then it will always be a non-zero chance to pass them all. Eventually the two players will die. If they pass the game on to their decendents, they too will eventually die. And, at the end of it all, the universe will experience heat death and it, too, will die. In the instance of "infinite" hits, we're talking more of functional infinity, rather than literal.
RAW you can't pass the game onto descendants, permissive ruleset. Unless we get an FAQ from GW. |

There are a few bits to this:
1) Chapter Approved is an annual book that updates points, not all updates are reprinted from CA to CA; so for proper points cost you need CA 2017 and CA 2018(or battlescribe).
2) FAQ/Errata requires the Death Guard FAQ, and every "Big FAQ"; which comes out in spring and Autumn. The next Big FAQ should be in October.
3) Chapter Approved is released late November to Early December.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

I don't think that's quite true. As I understand it all points changes from CA 17 are now obsolete. Just CA 18 applies now.

The Missions from CA17 are still valid. Luckily the Chapter Approved 2017 FAQ doesn't have any relevant material.

This. Any point changes that they meant to continue from CA 17 would have been printed in CA 18.(or an appropriate FAQ for CA 18 or the Codex)

Missions aren't point changes.

If you play with power levels a lot of this rubbish is cut out. And it’s fun too.

Yeah because it's fun to have an army that gets twice as much stuff as the other be considered "equal".

It's funny, because when I build a 2k list it's usually really close to the same PL. Like, surprisingly so. If you aren't trying to game PL then it's a pretty good approximation.
Problem is of course it's a competitive game, so if you are using PL going in then of course people will game it. The same way we would try to eke out as much value as possible from 2k points, it would only be natural to do the same for PL with much more unbalanced results.
Basically, PL is fine for super casual play, but the more competitive the attitude the more it breaks down.

PL is insanely stupid and extremely unbalanced. You cannot put the "power" of a unit in one number. Example : A unit of two company veterans have a PL of 3. Adding just one model increases the PL to 8 ! A dreadnought has a PL of 5. This means that three veterans with boltgun/chainsword are more powerful than a dreadnought with CCW, SB and assault cannon Now lets look at points, three vets are minimum 42, the dread is 104. PL is not fine, i will never play with it.

If you play against decent people it works fine. In most circumstances and all but the most competitive games a few dozen points here or there make no difference. It’s a system open to abuse yes. Stux has it right. It’s for casual players.
I suggest you try it with someone you know and trust and see what actual difference it makes. It won’t be as bad as you think. It’s basically the same system used in age of Sigmar. Buy stuff in blocks and same cost for all variations in war gear. Automatically Appended Next Post: And no worrying about which points sets to use and which book to buy. Automatically Appended Next Post: I only mentioned it as it would solve the OPs issues not wanting to start the PL sucks rage all over again. That can be found in many threads.

I am a casual player. Company veterans can pick between 13 (!) weapon options. How do you put all of those possible upgrades in one number ?? Its impossible.

I tried PL. Everyone will simply use the most powerful weapons, because they are free. Because why wouldnt you ? This game is about killing other units.

Well it works for me and my mates but we take the options we like best and are most fluffy and more often than not are on the models. Like I say, soon as anyone brings that attitude to it it is easily abused. And it works for age of Sigmar.
