Know Thy Enemy is a tool that helps players understand their opponent's abilities and the timings that are crucial to more balanced play. It creates a searchable eco-system of FAQs, errata, stratagems, relics, traits, and more.

Say, for instance, your opponent wants to double shoot his Whirldwind Hyperios. You could have sworn is was 2CP. And was there some other restriction? So you check 'Act Twice' for 'Astartes' and check FAQs for any mention of 'Whirlwind'.

Obviously I have a lot of formatting and data to resolve. There are limited listings for Orks (including Klans) and some Astartes (no chapters). I want to check first, however, with the community to make sure I have the right approach.

Please look over the listings. Check the options. Do they make sense to you? Would you word them differently? The goal is not to copy the codexes wholesale, but to extract the most important pieces so players can be more knowledgeable.

I already intend to tie the keyword search to non-FAQ items so that typing 'Whirlwind' would bring up anything mentioned it in any recorded document (though i'll only record the more uncommon items).

I appreciate any feedback you might have (aside from formatting - I have lots to do there, still).

It seems like a neat idea, though your search term seems to be ignored for 2 of the act twice results.

Blood for the bloo... wait no, I meant for Sanguinius!

Could you elaborate what you were searching for and what you expected to see?

Neat concept. May I suggest an edit to correct the spelling of Thy from They?

Mob Up is outdated. I can't get the search to work, is there supposed to be a search button you can click somewhere? Hitting enter after inputting my search parameters does not work for me.

It's up to your enemy to have all their rules and stratagems available, simply knowing vaguely that they should have access to some stratagem or rule somewhere that allows them to do something is not good enough if you can't show me the rule it doesn't exist. It's a brave effort though, I hope you can get it to work or it's just me being silly and not getting something basic.

Awesome feedback - thanks.

I've been meaning to fix the search, so I sorted it out for you. On a keydown in the search box it will start producing results after 4 characters have been entered. You don't need any other filters (if desired) and it will produce both abilities (strats, relics, etc) as well as relevant FAQs.

My follow up question to you - as you noticed Mob Up was out of date. The original intention is that I would supply the startagems in the book. Would it be better if I updated the stratagems myself from the FAQs? Could this create confusion? Or perhaps update it and also show the FAQ source?

If you don't update it with Errata your tool is worthless IMO.

Ok - point well taken. I will do that as well as provide sourcing in the FAQs. Keep it coming if you think of more stuff.

======================================

Codex Astartes (no supplements) is complete for key Units and Relics (I only list special notable abilities of relics) as well as Stratagems, Litanies, and Spells. When something has more than one type of effect I chose the one that is more impactful (e.g. Gaining CP over causing 1 mortal wound)

Poke at it and let me know if you don't like how things flow or how they're worded.

Iron Hands are done.

As another useful example - if i want to know whether or not Iron Hands affect my army in any special way I can search like this:

ALL Codex / IA FAQs & Errata have been loaded.

Vigilus will be loaded this evening. The book of origin is listed in each tile. Now begins the final slog of Codex Stratagems/Relics/Spells/etc.

You can use this link to access the tool directly: https://insighthammer.com/ips/index.php?/kte/

And you can follow updates here: https://insighthammer.com/ips/index.php?/topic/2-know-thy-enemy-news-updates/

Multi-word search is also available - separate with a semi-colon.

E.G. You wanted to check the stratagem for hellfire shells, but then you forgot how the cherub affects it:

Great tool!

Safari browser on iPad defaults to a font size in the search box that’s too large to be legible.

Don't want to sound like a jerk, but wahapedia exists. But build-in FAQ references are cool.

No offense taken. I feel like this is easier to use (or will be when its done) to quickly target concepts and ideas rather than scrolling through A4 sized pages on a phone. I'm a little skeptical of their wholesale reprinting of GW's material, but seeing as they're in Russia...*shrug*

There's a larger scope behind all this that will be revealed as I get these items pushed out.

And if you think there are other features that would be useful let me know.

Just reporting some weird behavior - when searching for "lootas" (without any additional settings) I get a bunch of duplicates.

When using it during a game I usually just punch in the name of the unit/weapon involved and only refine the search if I find too much.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

Not using the exact wording on the rules seems like a friction point, considering how fiddly GW rules are with their specifics. In any actual disagreement, I'd have to go and look up the official wording anyways, even if I had this reference. This just seems like another step for things to fall between the cracks.

Case in point: your example of Suppression Fire is actually worded as "can only shoot with weapons that can target units that are not visible to the bearer". It's massively overworded, but the firing unit CAN target visible units. It can only shoot twice with it's rockets/thunderfirecannon (and not say... it's stormbolter or HKM)

I agree, it's useless for finding rules, but one of the best tools right now for searching through FAQs.

I do understand that he can't put the rules in there due to IP laws.

That's weird. What browser are you using? Could you post a screenshot of what you're getting?

Valid concern. It's been mine as well. My goal isn't to replace GW books, but to give players more insight - especially when they're playing unfamiliar factions.

That TFC rule is one I had flagged to go back and change because I, like others, read it wrong. I changed 'Suppression Fire' to be: "Unit may shoot twice, but only with the Thunderfire Cannon profile"

As I dive deeper into more books I uncover lots of obnoxious fiddly little bits. Stratagems that trigger at weird places. Stratagems with dual effects. The "Phases" have ballooned. Once I have a good set in the database I can analyze how I can improve the flow and wording; like keying to major Phases (Move, Shoot, etc) and supplementing with Sub-Phases (End, Begin, Chosen To) as well as out of cycle Phases (Model Slain).

Once I have better idea I'm going to start making tags (essentially USRs) and make it easier to have clear interpretations and simple searching.

See below. Browser is Vivaldi, but I could reproduce it with Chrome, Firefox and Edge as well. Just open a new form and type "lootas".

Seems to have gotten worse - now I get all stratagems in your database in between the duplicate entries.

Oops - yea - I also changed the limiter on when it starts searching, because I wanted to confirm the other bug is solved.

So when you type "L" it searches for anything containing that letter. Once you get to "Loota" you should see just the relevant items with no dupes. If that sorts it then i'll put the 3 character limit back up to prevent unnecessary loading.
