The rules for creating custom character/unit/s. I am getting a model with a heavy weapon and a servo-arm. Pretty much a tech Marine. But the gear does not match what the normal tech wargear. I also need a heavy support unit. What book should I search to find creating custom units?

if it's not in the codex as an option you're out of luck

Well then how do you create custom characters?

there are some rules within chapter approved 2019. And a codex will have various options for differant types of characters.

beyond that, make something up and run it past your buddies.

Where might you find that info? My Google-fu is lacking. And I can not find it on warhammer community.

Note that these rules are horribly unbalanced.

They're explicitly not for Matched play anyway, but even in more casual games just be aware it's very easy to make totally broken Characters with these rules.

The only vaguely balanced way to use them is to allow both players to take the same number of traits. Even then, I'd still use a lot less than the rules say as it just gets extremely silly very quickly.

Basically there are no real rules to create custom Characters for normal games.

Even the custom character rules in Chapter Approved don't cover this. However, with a bit of tweaking and testing with different points values, you could quite easily come to a nice datasheet for your model. Just make sure to run it past your opponent first, don't expect them to have to be fine with it, and if in doubt, price your model a little bit higher than what you think.

Honestly, if that doesn't sound like your cup of tea, just run it as a Techmarine with a conversion beamer (found in the Space Marine index).

Yeah, most PUGs will not allow any homebrew Datasheets. But if you play with a close group of friends it might be an option.

100% agree that you should overcost any custom creation. The vast majority of people will tend to undercost things they design for themselves, and so if you think it's overcosted it's probably about right!

If you use the origional marine index you get options for a weapon called conversion beamer on tech marines. This could be represented by any big gun. I think that would be suitable in this case

Chapter Approved 2018.
Keep in mind that you aren't allowed to use the custom character rules in match play, just narrative and open.

Somewhere in Canada

Have you thought about Kill Team? Earning your traits with xp is pretty; even the CA 2018 stuff is designed to be earned over campaign play I think.

The other thing that's kinda cool about either of these options is that you get to play your characters at various stages in their development. You get to play the green soldier, with no skills; the promising young warrior with one skill, your weathered warrior with two skills and your cynical veteran with three skills.

It's interesting the way the rules influence the model's behaviour on the tabletop, which creates the personality of the character at various stages in the life cycle.

I think if you played KT with one of your friends in a campaign setting, you may be able to each drop in a character from KT into your 40k games, but I think that's pretty much the only way. KT rules at 40k scale would be crazy.

Well yea I wouldn't mind playing it. But no one in my area plays. I have taken to playing warhammer 40k as a bastardized version of Kt with a fellow player. It kinda just happened after I captured one of his surviving men after a brutal battle.

Get Battlescribe, it will help you with building an army and characters and help you keep up to date with changes without buying and sifting through literally hundreds of sources.

You seem new to the game so this won't be a replacement for actually getting and knowing the rules, but it helps manage the logistical nightmare that is 40K.

Square Bases for Life!
AoS is pure garbage
Kill Primaris, Kill the Primarchs. They don't belong in 40K
40K is fantasy in space, not sci-fi
