So what do you think of converting Impulsors out of Razorbacks?
Cut the back open, use the lascannons as rear engines (cut the barrels off) and use the Heavy Bolters as Storms (drill 2 holes in the barrel) and finally use the treads on the sides as the hover generator plates. Put on a flight base and profit.

At $75 per Impulsor, I can get 2 Razorbacks for within $5 of that cost.

While I love conversions, this seems like far too much work to make it looks halfway decent. If you cut the back off to the driver compartment, you don't have much room for the shield/comm/missile pod and you'd have to add a lot to the bottom to make the repulsor plates look convincing. Could be done, sure, but doesn't seem worth it from a money perspective.

I can respect that, although personally I am more willing to spend the extra effort rather then spend the extra cash. Effort is free. But I do draw the line as outright scratch building as it's far easier to have a framework (the razorback chasis) to start with

I too have been thinking about converting Rhino-chassis vehicles into grav-vehicles. Not to be counts as Impulsors but tho have classic marine tanks which fit visually better with the Primaris grav-vehicles. But I really don't think there is a way to make them look good without using actual grav-tank bits which obviously makes such conversions crazy expensive.

Nah, just glue the treads sideways at an angle. Make sure one edge of the trend touched the outside of the "wheels' and the other edge touched the lower edge of the tank. Should look perfectly anit-grav. Glue engine barrels out the rear tread space and have rounded treads sticking up out the front

It will look like crap.

Agreed....if you do it wrong.

I'm just saying that will a good amount of effort, it can work AND look good. For me, that effort is hardly an inconvenience. If anything, it's an exciting challenge I'm all up for.
But I can understand that not everyone who plays 40K is a die-hard hobbyist like myself, so that effort would be daunting.

I was talking about the method you described. It is not daunting, it just isn't enough to make a convincing grav-vehicle. One would need to do much more.

If it was a bog simple conversion I'd agree, but this seems like a really big project that could easily take 10-12 hours extra per Razorback conversion, and that's where I start thinking about how I could simply pull some overtime and buy the real deal.

Part of it is that I am thinking of ways to make this cheaper for my son, who doesn't have the option for overtime for his allowance. Getting him to spend $150 for the 2 Impulsors he needs for his list basically means he stops playing 40K altogether.
So I'm willing to bargain with him, he'll give me $50 and I'll buy 2 Razorbacks to convert into Impulsors. Which even with minimal effort will look good enough for our purposes.

Not to sound cocky, but I've been called a 40k Macguyver before, so I think I'll be fine working my magic. It's too bad not enough people feel confident in their conversion skills

There's always more too it than what I described. But if I didn't simplify it, people might get confused and no have any idea what I'm talking about

Well, I am certainly interested in seeing the end results.

Fair enough - if it really is a case of 'no money unlimited time', then it makes perfect sense.

The Impulsor, frankly, is designed with tournaments in mind.

It's for MSUs and a character.

when primaris Marines came out about 2 years ago, the first thing Marine players said was "we need a cheap (points wise) transport for them" and most people more or less described the impulsor, a rhino like hover transport, proably with a carry capcity of 5 to ensure the repulsor still has a place. apparently design turn around time for GW tends to be around 2 years (sometimes more but 2 years for something they really wanna get out) so I suspect the Implusor was quite literally made because we asked for it

If I'm going to be honest, I can't see why he needs two right off the bat?

There's being confident in your conversion skills and understanding that your conversion skills might not ever match the Real Deal.

I'm perfectly happy with my conversion skills. I can sculpt, I can do plasticard work, I've even tinkered a bit with resin casting replacement parts.
I don't see a reason, personally, to put myself through the effort of making two Impulsors out of Razorbacks because as nice as the kit is...it's going to likely see significant changes ruleswise down the road once tourneys start having them getting abused.

I'm thinking about getting one at the start for my Raven Guard. And I'm running the Orbital Array because nobody can tell me otherwise!

Because he has 10 Hellblasters and the Impulsor only fits 6. With 2 he can put 5 + his LT in one and 5 + his Capt in the other, push forward, disembark and nuke some stuff.
It gives him target saturation. He also has 2 Ven Dread, so that's plenty of vehicles for 1500pts. If he only gets 1, it will die first with no back up, or he'll have 5 of his Hellblasters just asking to be pew-pew'd before they get into RF range

I don't know, I never asked for a primaris razorback, a primaris rhino yes and this still isn't it. Neither did I ask for a transport to blow my wallet away with its orbital strike cost in dollars. I get some people see no issue with it, but I can't throw down the cash when it feels like a rip off. Was the same with the ad mech transport and now this. I wonder when it'll end, but looking at the last box set and these transport price ranges, it makes me think this is just the start.

For all those cool with it, I hope you enjoy them. Just not for me it seems. I'd rather be non mech and foot slog it at that point.

Why so upset? If you don't even want the unit there are no problems for you

between this and the admech transport, it is a sign that these are the new price of "medium weight vehicles" going into the future. plenty of reason to look at this price and be annoyed even if you aren't a Marine player
