If you liked Banished, but wanted a mod to make it more like Fallout, then this is your game.

Otherwise, it... has a slightly better UI than Banished? And random disasters like Surviving Mars.

Edit: ah, there is a world map and exploration bit, but it requires building a gate to your... completely open space. (What?)

And... Epic or Xbox only, at least for now, which is baffling since its a Paradox Interactive game published by Paradox, and they've been pushing their own launcher hard (and settling for people buying on Steam) for the last couple years.

Some gameplay:

Underwhelmed, personally. The pools of 'nuclear waste' that they're sleeping next to and that sits between their berry bushes (sole food source) and next to their well has me laughing.
I haven't been impressed with Paradox for a while, and this doesn't look like a good addition to their lineup.

Editted update: Also they announced Crusader Kings 3.
Which came as a surprise.

It's $20, so the price is appropriate for the kind of game it is.

As noted, the core game play looks a lot like Banished, but with a post-Apocalyptic theme. There's also a research tree for you to unlock various benefits. It's in early access right now. You can play a free trial that lasts one hour on the XBox, and then continue playing if you go ahead and pay for the game. Keep in mind, though, that the trial itself notes that gameplay may change significantly before the actual game comes out. The Epic store has it in Early Access, though it doesn't appear to have the free trial.

Its appearance on the Epic Store is puzzling. This doesn't strike me as the sort of title that Epic would pay for exclusive access. So I'm not sure what to make of that.

Updated slightly for the announcement of Crusader Kings 3.

Not many details yet, a few pictures of 3d models lurking about and a trailer that shows zero gameplay:

Could be interesting, my personal hope is a major UI overhaul and far fewer tiny little icons and nested information panels.

As I mentioned in the other thread I just put up, CK2 is now free. And you can get the Old Gods DLC by signing up on the CK3 site. Also, CK2 now has a "Monarch's Journey" mode that awards you points that will unlock customization options to be used in CK3.

A Mostly Renegades and Heretics blog.
GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

I've enjoyed Survive Mars and how atmospheric they make the game feel. Little things like dust on the rovers building up etc... really makes it feel immersive than just another city builder.

So I've some hopes for this one. As for the whole DLC thing in general Paradox isn't bad with DLC. They put out a lot, but often as not the core game is a complete package and then content rolls out to expand it.
Of course there's one or two bad examples in there, but by and large I've been happy with their DLC policies.

See, I've been feeling that their base games are intentionally bare frameworks, and they're selling dlc to fix the problems they left intentionally.

And their last few attempts at new games have just been utter gak in all their incarnations. Stellaris feels like a procession of different games with a shared engine, imperator was just a gak show from start to finish. HoI4 had some problems, but most of my issues with it come from finding WW2 dull from over saturation. The map effects are really neat.

Well, here's the thing -

Surviving the Aftermath isn't a $50 game, or even a $40 game like Surviving Mars. It's a $20 game. That's the same price as Banished (which is old enough that I would have expected the price to have come down by now). It's missing some things that Banished has (when I was playing the trial on my XBox, I didn't see anything about mines or quarries - although I can't rule out that there wasn't something buried in the tech tree, since my hour of playtime quite literally ended just as I was starting to look at the tech list). And it has things that Banished doesn't have (namely, random decision events, and world exploration).

So is it just a "framework"? It might very well be. But at the same time, we're not paying for a post-apocalyptic version of Cities: Skylines. We're paying for a post-apocalyptic version of Banished. And it's priced the same as Banished. Or in other words, even if they add a half-dozen DLC later on, the base game still appears to priced appropriately with a similar game.
