Looking good, think they are Brigs rather than Brigantines though.
Have you found them easy enough to paint? Played the game at all?

I have played it. 4 or 5 times now. I like the game because it's easy the way XWing is. It can be a beer and pretzls game pretty easily. There are a few things I don't like (mainly down wind sailing in a line). The good by far outweighs the bad. The painting is challenging. Don't put your masts on the ships to start as my biggest bit of advice from that regard. Im working on the 3rd rates today.

Yes, you are right. They are "Brigs" not "Brigantines". I thought the terms were synonymous, but Wikipedia says no.

Ship management is much less complex than sails of Glory. It makes the game play much more smoothly and will allow for larger battles, but the planning is less granular. So really they are just different animals. I like both but I think this game will be played more by our group due to its simplicity.

I really like it too, other than the ridiculous British bias in the faction rules. The advanced sailing rules really satisfy my naval pedantry, which is a rarity.

Thanks for the run through doctor_ g, what sort of point level/number of ships have you been playing at? I had a flick through the rules at the FLGS and couldn't make up my mind if it was a squadron or fleet game.

lord_blackfang; what is the ridiculous bias in the British fleet?

I think probably just squadron. The rules will work as a fleet but the mechanics of movement over a very big table would make it difficult. Best part about Historicals though is that the miniature is portable. "Fire as She Bares" looks like it would work well but I have no experience. Here's some more WIP pics...

My dad is a soon-to-be-retired former Navy captain, I wonder if I could convince him to play something like this with me.

I wonder how it compares to Osprey's Fleet Action game or GW's Trafalgar. I know the scale choice for this game was a bit controversial.

Hmmm, I didn't recall Americans ever getting a 1st Rate.... just Humphries Frigate. !

Lovely painting all around. I am always impressed with your speed and results.

I think they count the USS Constitution as a first rate, but I'm not positive. Certainly closer to a third rate or even a beefy frigate.
Oh and Easy, I'm learning about Thucydides currently via the great courses. Pretty amazing stuff. Quite an inspiring story?

Nice looking fleets there mate! Are you planning on making any terrain to go with them.

The Constitution was of the fifth rate, general rule of thumb;
1st - 100+ guns.
2nd - 90 - 98.
3rd - 64 - 80.
4th - 50 - 60.
All bearing their guns (only long guns are counted) on more than one deck.
5th - 32-44.
6th - 28 for a frigate, 20 - 24 for a jack ass frigate/brig/post ship.
On a single deck. Rating system changed after the Napolenoic Wars to include carronades with the cannon.

Another update. I probably have about an hour left on two more brigs and I have to do all their flags still. But I'm getting there!

Where do the names on the stern of the ships come from? I haven't seen these on the Warlord ships?

These are really impressive. I've got to say i've never seen ships of this kind in a game before, but I'm definitely interested.

@pahill. They come in the Fleet or country boxed sets from warlord.

Ah. Thanks.
Shame they don't sell them separately, I want all my ships to have names on them now.

Heres a game with fully painted Brigs and Frigs. We made a few mistakes but it was a fun game! Sailing in a line is a wee bit difficult. By turn 2 my brits were in complete disarray and the trying to round the north island I even ran aground! So embarrassing!

French Line of brigs and an unconnected French frigate taking fire from poorly captained English brigs that fell out of line to avoid collisions! Easy prey to for the French later in the game.

Looks very nice, the rigging in particular is great. How did you go about it? The ensign placment is triggering my ocd though!

Very cool!

They look great. I am curious how the game play goes, so was interesting to see your battle report. Sounds like movement can be a bit tricky.
