Pleased to see lots of new stuff and clarifications, expansions on previous snippets. Few oddities but hey - loads of info -

* Confirms use of Battle Chapels and also Invasion Cathedrums from orbit (mentioned back in Shield of Baal) as foward operating bases
* Vandires reign - no longer mention of the Sisters changing from Daughters to Brides of the Emperor (and back again). Now they are described as the "Ecclessiarchal bodyguard"
* the splitting of the two Great Convents on Ophelia VII and Terra is to ensure that a High Lord cannot control both.
* A novitate can "best all but the most veteran (Guard) sergeant in single combat"
* Adepta Sororitas are prime regulators of the Adep Ministorium
* p14-15 have great and comprehensive breakdown of the organsation of the Adepta Sororitas
* Orders have fleets - mainly orbital assault ships and macro landers but often have Battleships(and their crews) and other capital warships on loan for decades or centuries
* Order fleet assests do include Cruiser and Escort squadrons as well as the above and also Frateris Templar Battleships.
* The AS "serves at the behest of the Ecclesiarch and has a sacred duty to follow the dictates of whoever holds that office."
* Palatines still exist and lead Missions - smallest operational unit (but no actual character :( )
* Wargear supplied by Ad Mech in perpetuity following treaty between Vandire and Fabricator General Gastaph Heldiatrix, this Writ Illuminat was later confirmed by Seb Thor and by all subsequent Ecclesiachs
* All Wargear if first shipped to one of the Great Convents to be blessed. Sisters may make a pilgramage to ritually recieve her wargear, but in battle this may not be possible - using another fallen Sisters weapons is a blessing for she fights on in spirit.

*Order of Our Matyred Lady: See themselves as following Matriarchs way - so often praise those they fight alongside and died in battle - bravest are added to the Orders hymns of vengeance. Many Imperial worlds have Order Sancturies.
* Valorous Heart: "Pain is my sister who fights at my side", Lucia considers that the Order were still atoning for their actions under Vandire, implied that the heretics that tortured Lucia to death are still captives of the Order and still being punished for it. Favour heavy weapons and Exorcists. Many heavily scared, rarely accept pain meds and often carry out extreme excruication. Mainly based in the Ultima Segmentum.
* Bloody Rose: They Hate, alot! Their Matriarch was dark and brooding and died alone on Hydraphur, surrounded by the dismembered corpses of many of her attackers, The Order was founded in the 38th Millenium, famed as merciless executioners. All are taught to both foster and use their most violent impulses
* Ebon Chalice: All about Saint Dominica and her Grail of Ages, all seek to emulate her perfection. After she died, the Order was commanded by a Diaogus of the Order of the Holy Word, noted for her humility. many sisters killed in recent decades, many recruits flooding in from the Scola. Defeated Chaos Marine warbands such as the Blades of the Despoiler. They have always focused on safeguarding Terra and Segmentum Solar.
* Argent Shroud: Their Matriarch, Silvana was the first to die - in mysterious cricumstances, her body vanished leaving an image of her bones on the shroud. "Deeds not words" -no words by Silvana have been recorded and her Sisters seldom speal save for hyms or prayers. Rarely communicate with allies. They execute bold and dangerous plans, Silvana often answering their prayers when they get cut off so they survive where it is impossible to do so. Favour Dominions who often lead rites or worship. They do not cry out when other Sisters die, or recite prayers - they care for the bodies for seven days and then they are removed..... 80% of the Order is thought to have been lost in the Noctis Aeterna but the Order, somehow does not seem to be diminished and Preceptories thought lost have returned to battle.
* Sacred Rose: The devout of the Devout. "Victory comes from Faith and Faith alone." Arabella perfromed many miracles in her lifetime, how she died is not recorded. Ecclesiarch Deacis VI forms the Order in the 38th Millenium. Main parish is the Ultima Segmentum but can be found across the galaxy. More than any other Order, Priests and their fanatical flock / conclaves cleave to them who they welcome as Arabella did. A beacon of Hope in the new galaxy.

Minor Orders
* Glowing Challice: Descendants of the Ebon Challice, tend to strike at Terren dawn, even though the light from Terra does not reach them, they know.
* of the Thorn: Described as Rampaging Butchers, similar to the Bloody Rose., when they die in battle, their skins are put into the crypts with their enemies blood still u;pon them
* Of the Iron Veil: Decendants of the Argent Shroud.Survived the Cerebyte Uprsiing and even continued to recruit.
* of the Ashen Shrine: Miracles basd on fire abound.

*Saints noted: The six original Matriarchs plus: Praxedes, Valpurgis and Celestine

* Ephrael Stern name checked as Seraphim Superior of the Order, Daemonifuge of Parnis, Thrice-born and Matyr.

Cool! The 1997 Codex was a good read, I hope the 2019 one lives up to it.

Anybody else spotted the sneaky dig at Trump in one of the flavour quotes yet?

A little bit of righteous anger now and then is good, actually. Don't trust a person who never gets angry.

My favourite fluff bit so far is the minor Order of the Golden Light.

There are rumours that they haven't taken in any new recruits for decades. That they are reborn heroes and martyrs from other orders.

...and they wear golden armour...

Kinda sounds familiar...

PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE STORMCAST BEHIND THE CURTAIN!

I also note that the new 'dex says the Custodes where actively involved in the alliance agaisnt Valdire.

If so, then it begs the question how he lasted more than 5 seconds considering they know all the secret passages and stuff. Unless you mean at the very end, when they tried to convert his bodyguards.

But then again, Vandire fluff is dumb in general, see 4 chapters breaking through Battlefleet Solar and walls that stopped 8 legions before...

In fairness they spent years building things up before the Traitors arrived and I doubt they rebuilt it to the same standard after it was destroyed.

Isn't the current fluff stating that if anything, fortifications are vastly larger now? As they weren't rushed in a decade, but rebuilt and reinforced for 10.000 years? After Cadia fell, Chaos tried to attack Terra for the second time, and it was just B plot in one book, not a pivotal moment...

No idea. But GW are so bad at writing it could be both tbh.

My favorite bits of the lore are the ones on the individual Order pages.

Like the Order of the Sacred Rose still being able to coordinate and execute long-range strategic offensives as if they could see the Astronomicon despite being in the Imperium Nihilus.

The Order of the Valorous Heart literally turns planets into deathworlds to fight over, wiping out all life on the surface with poisons and atmosphere pumps before landing.

The Order of the Ebon Chalice still has Saint Dominica's... well, ebon chalice. And apparently pouring a libation from it makes the heads of every psyker on the same planet explode (don't do this on Terra).

The Order of the Bloody Rose have death-company-esque sisters who glow red and weep tears in combat. They call them Red Saints and believe they're possessed by the soul of their wrathful patron, Saint Mina.

The Argent Shroud sanctuary worlds were almost entirely destroyed by the opening of the Cicatrix Maledictum, but the Order shows no sign of diminishment and the Preceptories that were destroyed keep randomly showing up at battles like nothing happened.

Etc.

Turning planets into deathworlds to fight on them seems counterproductive.

That's the point. The Valorous Heart are so freakin' fantastic that they think a deathworld fight is harder on their opponents than them. And apparently that is true.

I've been thoroughly delighted reading through this book. It's amazing what getting a full codex can do. A full page of lore on each Order Majoris, plus a derivative Order Minoris for each with NAMES and COLORS and almost as much fluff as the Orders Majoris used to have.

Not to mention, the new units have had me cackling. Only the Imperial Clergy and Sororitas would decide that Penitent Engines weren't hardcore enough and needed not one, but TWO more sadistic versions to suitably punish their own. The added details to the Penitent Engines, like projecting the penitent's own face on their enemies so they're driven to fight them out of their own self-loathing is just extra special icing on the cake. Also, hover battle pulpit. Yes. This is why I signed up for Sisters, those decades ago.

Oh I get that. Making the planet a hellscape that hurts the enemy more than you I get. But what about after? What's the point if you can't have normal people living there? Going through the effort of conquest just to have a world that's largely uninhabitable is really silly IMO.

Conquest? That's for the Guard.

The Sororitas punish, cleanse, and scour. Especially, apparently, the Valorous Heart.

They seem to think that if Chaos/Xenos/otherbadthings have affected a planet, then all other life on the planet is tainted by association - and even the planet itself.

Well that's just crazy. But to be fair so are the Sisters considering how zealous they are with their worship.... If they aren't there to conquer it then my complaint goes away.

Let me phrase it this way:
The Sororitas work with other Imperial authorities when involved in a war effort (e.g. SM Chapters, the Astra Militarum). So if the Valorous Heart were to "conquer" something, they'd do so as part of a larger Imperial operation.

When the Sororitas go to war without other Imperial authorities, it is typically because they uncovered some kind of deviation from the Imperial Creed. For example, there's a story in the new book where they go to war with some Tau over a human planet that is swaying towards the Greater Good. They guard against Chaos worship and the like on friendly Imperial worlds. Therefore, scouring the world clean is viewed as a certain kind of torturous punishment, and is likely only done when the Valorous Heart themselves are operating independently from the rest of the Imperial war machine.

Another funny example is the Argent Shroud, who oftentimes do not coordinate with Imperial authorities, but are also much kinder and selfless than the Valorous Heart, so they believe in "saving" worlds rather than exterminating them, doing only what is required to purify the world and no more. In their example story, they intervene in a conflict with the Orks, silently decimating enough Ork forces so that the local Imperial Guard exceed some "Strategic Victory Threshold" in terms of their numbers, and then they just feth off, leaving the Guard to finish the job. The only sentence they transmit is right when they are leaving, and it says 'Silvana protect you.'

At that point Vandire had lost his army to a Warp storm and pretty much everybody had turned against him besides his bodyguards. The 4 Chapters weren't alone either, they had the support from an entire army from Mars to begin the siege.
