Ok so I am new please bear with me!

I just bought a ton of Primaris marines, I am painting them with the idea to field these as an army some day but as of now I have never played the game - just watched some bat reps on youtube.

I think Im going to go the the Blood angels chapter - but I am confused what codex should i get? I am keeping the army exclusively Primaris for the moment.

What should i get book wise?

Codex: Blood Angels & Psychic Awakening: Blood of Baal are the two books you'll want. The Codex was released in 2017, and Blood of Baal a few weeks ago to update / add stuff to it.

From what I understand you would at least need the blood angels codex. But, you would probably also need the new Blood of Baal book which has updated rules and datasheets for them.

Alternatively, if you’re not entirely sold on blood angels and you only have primaris, you could try just using the space marine codex since it’s more generic and let’s you run every chapter except blood angels, dark angels and space wolves.
The rules for every primaris unit are already in there, so you’d just be missing special characters and the BA specific chapter tactics and stratagems. But you can make do with the custom traits for the time being, and you’d only need the 1 book instead of 2 for regular blood angels.
The downside would be that if you really want to go pure blood angels afterwards, you would have to buy the other two books anyway.

It’s a tad confusing, unfortunately.

I would get the new Space Marines codex and wait for the revised BA codex/supplement.

Thanks guys, I think for now I will go with the standard space marine one and go from there. It sounds like for a complete noob it will give more basic understanding then can get the other books later.

I don't think there will be a new BA codex, not for a year or more. PA (Psychic Awakening) is intended to tie them over for a while. GW can't rewrite each codex every two years.

As far as OP goes, I would read the rules for all the SM armies before you buy a book. You can just flip through the books in your LGS, make some armies on battlescribe, or look at Wahapedia [http://wahapedia.ru/wh40k8ed/factions/blood-angels/]. That way you won't be confused. All SM armies take their main codex (generic SM, BA, DA, SW, DW, GK) and then a supplement of some kind. Generic SM have their codex supplements, except BT who have a PA book. BA have a PA book and DA and GK will also get one soon. I don't know what SW and DW will get, but I am sure they will get an update within a year. All these armies also have additional rules in Vigilus Defiant and one of the recent PA books, but they are pretty minor IMO; I'm not sure if I've ever seen anyone using them.

if blood angels are what strikes your fancy get codex blood angels and the Blood of Bhaal book (this you can get later, it's only important if your purchases ncluded any of the vanguard marines)

I think that's a very safe decision for a newbie. That book is really flexible, with lots of interesting things to try out, and will help you get to grips with the flagship faction and the game in general.
