I'm planning on painting a handful of Batman models and decided to do something with the snow effect I bought but haven't had a chance to use yet. I've never done deep snow before, so I figured why now a wintry Gotham?
That leaves me with a problem I've never figured out. What do I do with the base edge on bases fully covered with snow? White to match the snow? Black/dark grey for the tarmac under the snow? Brown to get a spot of color onto models that will otherwise be very black and white?
Opinions would be welcome. Picture examples, too.

Yeah, I agree. Nothing beats a black base trim. Just looks clean and gives a nice finish

Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless — like soup. Now you put soup in a cup, it becomes the cup; You put soup into a bottle it becomes the bottle; You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now soup can flow or it can crash. Be soup, my friend. |

I use black. Acts as a frame for the base.

I use Russ Grey as the rim color for my snow bases, it enhances the chilly look in my eyes.

I definitely think grey can work if the model is the right colour.
But a lot of it depends on creating a reasonable contrast with the model on top tbh.

Personally I'd go for either plain black (all my own bases get a coat round the edge of vallejo black PU primer - it's a nice black) or whatever the predominant colour of your scenery is.

I use Scorched Brown / Rhinox Hide - it's still quite dark, but gives a little more richness than plain black.

Look in the citadel colour app. they have verry good basing tutorials IMO. I use the "urban winter" base for my orks and i must say that it is a very good result! When it's a handfull of models, you can go locco on the use of texture paints to really create a beautifull snowy base. I use it on eco mode (horde army, you know )

Dakka is the ork word for shooting, but the ork concept of shooting is saturation fire. Just as there is no such thing as a "miss" in a target-rich environment, there is no such thing as a "dodge" in a bullet rich one

I've always preferred clean black base rims.
Contrasting colors tend to draw attention to the rim and, thereby, away from the model, where you want it. Accent colors belong on the mini (and sometimes basing), IMO. If you're afraid of things being too monochrome, I'd revisit the models, not try and shoehorn some color in elsewhere.
Matching terrain colors never looks right to me, either, because it's just a smooth, monochrome block of color. Your basing/terrain will have texture and color variation, even if you play on a printed mat, so the rim ends up being visually jarring.
Black is just a neat frame that is easily overlooked. Think of it like the outlines in a (color) cartoon or comic. You don't think about how much black is in Superman's costume - you're seeing blue, red, and some yellow accents; the black is just there to separate one thing from another and we naturally ignore it. I find the same generally happens with black base rims.

Thanks, guys!
Seems like a lot of votes for black. I guess since the models are primed black there's no harm in leaving the base edge black and seeing how that looks. Good point on subconsciously ignoring black. I've used black edges before, but not on an all white base (thus not being sure about it).
I'll keep grey in mind, but the one in the picture seems a bit too middle of the road for my taste (thanks for the picture, though!).
