So I have been playing warhammer 40k CSM with their index that released with dark imperium in 2017. I have been meaning to update to the 2019 codex but after the last CSM codex debacle I'm very hesitant. Has there been any word of yet another rules update for Chaos to come soon? Should I just get the codex?

NO

Use battlescribe, etc. The book is not hugely valuable. Vigilus Ablaze is more worth your time OR depending on your chosen Legion - Faith and Fury.

If you have no codex and just want one then its fine, but otherwise...no use.

Isn't the dark imperium codex a mini death guard codex? Chaos marines have become a separate book, or the other way round, whatever.
If you want to play deathguard there isn't anything interesting here, they havee their own book and I don't know how that stacks up to the dark imperium codex, though if I would hazard a guess, I'd say you want the codex.
And if you want to play chaos space marines and you don't have the first codex, then yes, feel free to get it.
Then it depends on what faction you want to play as to see what supplement you want.

In terms of other publications, Deathguard should still be getting a psychic awakening book in theory, but they won't be updating the base codex along side, so you'll need the the codex and supplement either way.
Black Legion may or may not get another supplement though I would be very surprised to see anything, MAYBE a future could contain updated Legion traits for all but that seems like wish listing to me.
So yea, the book situation is pretty much done for the near and not so near future, except for DG who should be getting a supplement but not a codex update.

If you have the old codex from the beginning of the edition, you don't need the new codex, you need vigilus ablaze and faith and fury.
If you don't have the old codex, you'll need the new codex, vigilus ablaze, and faith and fury.

The 2019 codex contains a few datasheet updates that they also made available here: https://www.warhammer-community.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/ENG_CSM_Datasheets.pdf, and IIRC that's it.

sounds like he hasn't gotten a codex and is limited to the index. and if that's the case christ buy the codex, the CSM codex is a straight up upgrade from the index.

My gut reaction was the same however, now you have the sad reality that to be "up to date" you would need to buy the codex and Vigilus ablaze and Faith and Fury.

Everything you need can be found online and printed. The 2019 CSM codex is an insult to their customer base, buying it will only encourage them to do it again.

Besides, CSM are in such a poor state that they're bound to receive a new codex soon.

Isn't the ablaze stuff in the new codex? Pretty sure mk2 codex was old codex + ablaze combined so if you had old codex ablaze got you up to speed, if you don't have either get new codex.

You seriously think they're going to get a *third* codex in a single edition of 40K?

If you only have the index, buy the new codex.

If you want to play a Renegade chapter or Black legion, buy Vigilus Ablaze.

If you want to play any of the other legions, buy faith and fury.

You don't need the formations from Vigilus if you arent using the rest of the book, just print those off.
