Guardsman with Flashlight

Hello I'm at a place with my Imperial Guard that I feel comfortable just adding the occasional unit to and committing to a second army with the Guard.

Admech and Genestealer both have fantastic ranges and great bits to kitbash into my guardsmen as well! I like the character models for both ranges as well and the fluff.

Admech

Pros:
Great metallics
Unique looking and powerful vehicles to have fun modelling and painting
Repair spam.
Cawl
Excuse to eventually get a knight
Bits for weapons not found in guard boxes
Great looking new flyer
Could make cool kitbashed Mechanicus trained veteran squads

Cons:
One strong tone across all robes
Lots of spindly bits to snap off
Might be too similar to IG gunline?
Silly looking new transport model

Genestealer Cults

Pros:
Another horde army
Lots of kitbash and weapon swap opportunities can finally create penal guard conscripts or vets with shotguns
More opportunity to use models I already own
Fun new psychic powers
Motorcycles and demo charges
Different types of xenos, clothes etc.. variety of painting

Cons:
Another horde army
Lots of new rules
Current imperial guard army might not aesthetically fit with xenos
Smaller vehicles

Make a list of "Models you like" (not rules, not lore, just the kits) for each force.

The one with more entries? Start that one.

For real! Any army I build has to be aesthetically pleasing to me first. I don’t care if the rules for that army are broken as hell, if the models are garbage I’m not playing them. Hence why I wouldn’t go with gsc. I’m not a fan of the models.

Personally, I wouldn't go with GSC unless you plan to omit brood brothers.

Just another flavour of IG.

If you are willing to invest in another army then get one which plays completely differently to the one you have.

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

Thanks for the responses guys. I think I'm leaning into admech although I do like GSC range quite a lot. Just need a better transport solution as my Guardsmen generally have a pretty crude transport and it's easy to pack up leman russes and chimeras. I think eventually building up towards a knight would be cool and like the idea of some mechanicus/guard crossover with bits and bobs.

My guard scheme is white and royal blue with gold aquillas on snow bases. So I think the admech would look great blended in as a grey-blue force with brass and silver metallics maybe purple or bright green eye sockets. Could look like they are part of the same expedition force but still seperate entities.

There was my one off tech priest for my IG army but I don't think I'd want to do an entire army in this scheme.

I think that's a good call, as having the Imperium keyword for both your armies will allow you to mix and match them easily.

I wouldn't feel obliged to unify them this way (unless you want to of course!) as that's not how it works in the lore. Imperial expeditions are often comprised of completely disparate forces with no unifying themes (aside from loyalty to the Emperor of course!).

I actually think that's a great scheme that presents a nice foil to your current guard scheme.

i voted for the inquisition, simpl because there is no Chaotic option.

GSC, don't just need to be GSC, GSC can literally represent a slew of other forces and factions of insurgents and pirates, (altough ever since GW shafted my R&H i am biased because i eventually switched to gsc rules use, that said, you can customize awfully lot of things and that makes it atleast for me interesting.)

GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

Admech is going to play exactly identically to guard. Play GSC, build in to something different.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Without reading the rest of the post, I voted GSC, but it sounds like you want Admech more, so go for it!

I agree with Yarium, it really seems you like admech more. I like the admech line better visually but rules wise they are both pretty good, now that admech have a transport option and at some point a flyer I think they are I a better place.

Blood for the bloo... wait no, I meant for Sanguinius!

It really depends on your play style and coming from your AsM background - the obvious choice is AdM:
AdM: most likely gunline play style.
GSC: most likely DS/assault play style.

I have both armies + a small IG detachment and I can say that the GSC + IG obviously have much more synergy. Though from a fluff standpoint, IG can be played with either (a forgeworld's personal Tech Guard perhaps).

"The only problem with your genepool is that there wasn't a lifeguard on duty to prevent you from swimming."

"You either die a Morty, or you live long enough to see yourself become a Rick."

IMO it's not worth starting an army that's too similar to your main army in playstyle. So GSC would be out for me. Not to mention IG is already GSC with (much) better models.

At least with AdMech you get a Sentinel-ish unit that isn't crap.

truthfully of the two choices presented I'd argue neither are gonna be massivly differant, I'd try something fairly differant, an elite army (this both ensures differance and ensures your secondary army doesn't take up a whole ton of space) maybe try custodes, space marines or even Imperial Knights?

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two
