He was when M'shen caught up to him.

No, he was a psychopath more than a lunatic, but Johnson repeatedly calls him a madman. His hubris doesn't allow him to see that he's being played the whole time.

Admittedly, its him who realises that curze vision shows that the emperor survives the Heresy.

Curze is a madman. and a raving loon. The man can't even live in the current. He's obsessed with his own death and the future. He's intelligent. But he's still a full blown loon.

Describing someone as "lunatic" is pretty vague, though. On one hand a lunatic can be the guy who carefully plans a ritualistic murder to appease the voices in his head, on the other hand it can be the babbling, drooling wacko who doesn't even know where he is and rants about the gnomes stealing his hair.

Now for some reason, I'm picturing Curze as Howard Hughes, storing his piss in bottles and all that.

He was way further gone than that. He stitched together an effigy of the emperor from cadavers and talked to it...

But as I said, still mugged off Jonson something fierce.

That sounds like perfectly rational behaviour. At least, that's what my imaginary friend tells me.

Seriously though, it's a real shame that the Imperium managed to retain enough medical knowledge from the Dark Age of Technology that they can keep someone healthy for centuries, but apparently didn't care much about psychiatry or antipsychotic drugs of any kind. That or the Emperor just decided that the clearly insane guy didn't need any treatment because it would have mellowed him too much...

How would the heresy have turned out if Curze had taken his medication?

Man, people can be cruel; if it's not your personality then it's your hobbies they slag off.

If the Emperor had remembered psychology was a thing then there probably wouldn't have been a heresy.

Part of the thing is, when the Lion sends Luther (and the PoV character) back to Caliban, it seems almost of out spite. Luther had already reached the point were he was jealous of his former son/apprentice, but had been keeping it in check.

No real motive for the Lion's decision is presented, and Luther and others seem fairly resentful of being sent back. Which leads to them researching a crazy knight order that tried to use the giant chaos spawn (which the Lion, Luther and their order crushed as the first arc of the HH novel, before the Imperium turned up). Kept their records though, which seemed to be an oops.

Caliban has always been a little too close to the Eye of Terror and had a hidden Chaos corruption in the form of Ouroboros hidden in it.

Yeah... the chaos corruption on Caliban wasn't ever hidden. It was very obviously tainted, hence the giant chaos spawn the knights were trying to wipe out and its status as a Deathworld.

The Ouroboros... thing was weirdness they tacked on for... reasons, and something of a retcon to Caliban's story. [Which is of course a retcon to the proper DA history, when they recruited from native american style tribes and wore black armor]

That's not a retcon, the feathers that the Deathwing wear are in recognition of a tribe from a recruiting world that saved them in a fight against Genestealers (and appeared the same time the Terminator armour switched colours). It's very recent history in 40K terms.
Dark angels have always had a lot of recruiting worlds, due to not having a homeworld.

No real motive ? Luther is implicated in a plot to kill Johnson..... its aborted but obviously Johnson suspects so sends Luther and others home to recruit and train new Dark Angels.

The Heresy era story isn't over yet , caliban is cut off from the Imperium and when the proverbial brown stuff hits the fan they believe they are loyal. Right now the Lion is the guy who played a part in Imperium Secundus, declaring a new Emperor, so it's easy to see how this could play out. It won't be as simple as they return to Caliban and it's obviously gone traitor , I aspect t they'll open fire preemptively on the remains of the chapter which has already purged the taint from their ranks, and the hunt for the Fallen is to cover this epic act.
