UPDATE: April 2020

Here's the current Fluff I've written up with the intent to run them as a custom regiment with Wilderness Survivors and Monster Hunters for Casual/Narrative play:

1st Fedrid Expeditionary Regiment “Sa’vak Hunters”

Regimental Traits:
• Wilderness Survivors
• Monster Hunters

The thick forests of the Imperial Feral World of Fedrid are so dense and so teeming with dangerous carnivores that access is forbidden without a license. Fedrid is a particular favorite of game hunters and those individuals procuring animals for the Imperial arenas. The dangers are legion, ranging from the tiny but insidious flesh boring rot worms, to lurking pit-biles hiding beneath the loam with snapping jaws like mantraps, to thorn-back reptiles the size of Imperial Guard battle tanks.

To provide protection and rescue (when possible) for rich nobles and merchants who visit Fedrid for the thrill of the hunt, an Imperial Guard garrison was established. Over time this hostile planet, seething in eternal battle of predator and prey, was selected to become an Imperial Guard training center for native and other tithes from many other worlds in the Calixis sector.

The savage character of this feral death world quickly weeds out all but the most strong, stealthy, and deadly warriors. Often armed with native made Razor Disks, Smoke Flares, and Braid Cloaks, guardsmen from this world have become renowned for their ability to conceal themselves until they strike with deadly power. So practiced are they in fighting the deadly creatures of Fedrid, that they are often called upon specifically to stalk and eliminate the most monstrous enemies xenos forces have to offer.

Next step besides getting some of the heads with hats listed below on some guys, is to come up wtih a 500ish point detachment that I might take in a guard soup list with the specific purpose of monster hunting.

Old Stuff:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've been working on my army and its fluff for a few months now, and I'm interested in additional eyes reviewing how I'm doing on building out their background.

I wanted to go with a forest world to rationalize green camo themes on the guardsmen and support vehicles, and after poking around I got interested in the planet Fedrid (https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Fedrid).

It occurred to me that a planet where the elites of the Imperium go to hunt highly dangerous creatures in a near death-world environment would likely end up with an Imperial Guard garrison on-world to provide security and the occasional rescue as needed. A garrison having been established, and the fact that Fedrid is essentially Feral Deathworld, it might become a usefl center for inducting and training the tithes from surrounding systems by subjecting them to drill and combat in the deadly environment. Leadership for the Regiment might be taken from ranks of surviving veterans from other Armies, especially where they may have families well connected to the elites that come to visit Fedrid.

Given the deadly combat skills needed to survive, and the need for mechanized support to travel about the planet, I figure the regiment will be similar to Catachan in its doctrine, but with the rotation of other guardsmen and shipments of equipment arranged by powerful patrons, there may be times when its doctrine resembles other guard regiments. In particular, given the need for tough and reliable armored support and weapons for transport on such a deadly world, the equipment and tactics sometimes resemble those of Armageddon.

While there is a high attrition rate for the Guard during training on this world, a need to ensure the resulting skill is used in the protection of the Empire, and a need to avoid the perception that Guardsmen from well connected families might be reeving special treatment by receiving leadership roles on a luxury hunting outpost, drive a requirement for deployment of elements of the Regiment to other worlds as needed to fight the Xenos Scum.

Guardsmen from Fedrid often carry a Fedrid Razor Disk which, coupled with their experience fighting the monsters of Fedrid, gives them an edge in close combat similar to Catachans (I'm actually considering gluing . Fedrid snipers are rarely found without a Fedrid Braid Cloak, a traditional hunting accessory for natives and visitors. (I'm actually considering gluing tiny external tooth lock washers to many of the guys to serve as fluff razor disks https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-1-2-in-Zinc-Plated-External-Tooth-Lock-Washer-8-Piece-20591/202704608, assuming that isn't likely to get me into trouble at GW shops and tournaments).

Sounds cool to me, I like that you're going to tie the background to your models through the addition of the razor disk weapons too. Nice work!

Given that the Catachan bandana heads are quite recognisable, it would be cool to give them a hat or something to differentiate them. Maybe slouch hats to go with the ranger/ big game hunter theme?

Mad robot minis do some cool headswaps:

And the Perry twins do just the hats:

Those are neat. I'm starting with a few squads built on Cadian models due to availability. As long as the heads wouldn't cause trouble at GW (will ask them) that would be a neat mod. I might later use the cadians for the conscripts, and make veteran squads the guys with the hats.

according to the wiki it is a Feral Death World with a native human population that acts as guides.

Your world sounds kinda like Armageddon, a productive World that have access to APCs, and a deadly jungle somewhat like Catachan; such world have many regiments deployed in their specialty.

You can see my Armageddon ork hunters and steel legion in my gallery for inspiration; ork hunters are essential Catachan models with necromunda gang pads, and face paints; the commander has the disc shield(madrobot miniatures lykan commander arm bit) in your fluff.

Victoria Miniatures "Van Diemen World Devils" could also be worth a look:

Nice ideas on the face paint, and the Van Diemen World Devils figs.

Yea Fedrid is a weird one in that it is a full on Death World with tough as nails human natives, but also gets high end dignitaries and nobles visiting for the hunting, and they Have to have a Guard presence to watch over them. ALSO, according to the fluff one of Fedrid's main exports is a specialized tree crawler that travels in the tress without touching the ground. For that to be true there is likely to be some AdMech presence I would think no? A feral death world doesn't full of savage native humans doesn't just export advanced hybrid tree walkers unless there's some sort of low-key technology and forge activity going on in addition to mere hunting.

And I forgot: I really like your fluff. It's a cool idea and I'm looking forward how your regiment comes along.
If you are into kitbashing it could be funny to convert some monsters/animals as proxies. You can stick to Age Of Sigmar creatures if you want to stay on GWs good side. The Seraphon Bastiladon can be a nice tank proxy and the stegadon could make for an interesting transport.

Note that there are probably any number of nylon style washers in tiny sizes you could also use for your razor weapons.

One thing you might consider is looking around the various age of sigmar creatures for something about the size of a gaurd walker sentinal. If you take such an animal and end up with a pair of gaurdsmen riding its back -- one directs it, the other loads the autocannon -- that seems like it would be totally like your world's idea of light field tank support for jungle hunting use. Get the heavy thread used with leather awls to sew leather together as that makes a nice rope on the scale of the guard model, as the straps to hold the gaurdsmen (maybe some sort of round washer saddle on a lizard's back). I dunno. Just thinking out loud, but for maximum LOLS I would try to get a turtle as the "legs" and build the top of a sentinal on it. Cause you know, ok, turtles are soooo fast.

The disks should be fine in any gw store, even a headswap shouldn't upset them at all -- your model is still above their magic number of 80 percent "their product" per model. (or is it 90 percent? I don't remember). Also note that each scion 5 man squad comes with 5 helmetted heads (that are very spaceman spiff) and 5 berret wearing heads (you can see one in my gallery the ministerium priest has it on. I really should touch up his paint job). Point is, if you ended up buying some scions, you could use a bunch of their heads to make different things look "jungle hunter in a berret" ish. No reason you couldn't do a bunch of gaurdsmen with those as their heads and have a very easy but still different looking bunch of veteran gaurdsmen to put next to your normal gaurd. "These guys have so many special / heavy weapons cause they are in the squads, man, the ranger veteran hunter squads that go after big game!" Also consider that any GW store that gives you trouble is probably an idiot about to go out of business in this time of virus, they really can't be jerks or picky about the clients who DO bother to support them still.

That's great thinking Duke.

To your point I've already decided that all veterans are going to get the Scion beret heads. I like the idea of having a mix of the cadian helmets and some of those more jungle / outback type heads mixed in the main forces. Might give the outback hats to the special weapon guys at least.

Actually one of the things I was thinking of was to get a few boxes of Sigmar Chaos Marauders, and try to mod the guys to hold lasrifles as the "Conscripts" from the wild tribes of the planet. Not sure I can afford to make them the main body of the infantry but that's an option long-term if I end up liking the way it looks.

Would be a hoot to turn this sigmar turtle into a Baneblade variant https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Seraphon-Bastiladon
Or one of these into a Hellhound https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Seraphon-Saurus-Oldblood-on-Carnosaur

My info may be a bit out of date, as it's been a while since I last played at a GW store, but the going rule for a while was 51% or more had to be GW.

A bigger issue is whether the heads fit on the body. With GW's weird scale, the heads could end up being too small.

I imagine it'll depend on the store manager and how much they still look like GW minis.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

Hmm... I don't get a good sense of scale from the GW picture. Still, would be fun to graft the hull of some vehicle on its back

Local GW guy said he didn't one anyone bringing things that would draw attention to other sellers of bits, or personal customization work.

Maybe I'll do a small group of conversions and try a game there and see how he reacts.
