...having his spirit shattered into a thousand different pieces, why is the case any different for Horus when the Emperor killed him with a powerful psychic blast? Could there be some sort of fragment that lingers on in the Warp or attached itself to someone or something like Abaddon?

Magnus was simply shattered, (likely done by Tzeetch as a test, especially as in the end Magnus essentially lost his huimanity as a result) Horus was obliterated by the emperor. they are not comparable AT ALL

Fair point. I haven't read any of the HH series, but was curious as to the nature of spirits/souls in the 40K Universe and how they function after death. Ferrus Manus being brought back in spirit form by the Emperor and Magnus' shattering was what sparked the question.

UK

Russ shattered Magnus' soul at the climax of their duel during the Burning of Prospero. Each shard represented a facet of his personality and intellect. The largest shard led the Thousand Sons into exile on the planet of Sorcerers. Some time later, the Thousand Sons realised that Magnus was starting to unravel. Ahriman decided that the only way to save him was to gather as many of the shards as possible and attempt to reunite them in order to restore Magnus's integrity. The mission was largely successful and Magnus was stabilised but not all the soul shards could be recovered. One vital shard was stuck on Terra, out of reach. Sadly this fragment contained Magnus' nobility, humility and compassion. This means that Magnus effectively lost these positive aspects of his personality.

Shortly before the Siege, Malcador the Sigilite discovered this soul shard and attempted to bind it into the body of a loyalist Thousand Son who was dying of the Flesh Change. He hoped to create a being powerful enough to sit on the Golden Throne (Magnus's original purpose). Instead of being bound, the Soul Shard merged with the Thousand Son and cured him permanently of the Flesh Change. He named himself Ianus and is widely believed to be the found of the Grey Knights.

the novel Buried Dagger shows us the Marines sent out to found the Grey Knights (while being annoyingly vague and secretive about a lot of their identities *sigh*)

Wasn't that Janus and not Ianus being mentioned?

If he's part Primarch then wouldn't he also live longer than other Grey Knights? What happened to him?

Unspecified. His last mention was at the end of the War of the Beast, where he was still serving as the Supreme Grand Master.

Importantly, he's not part Primarch. He had a shard of a primarch's psyche imprinted on him.

So was the shard destroyed in that imprinting or is some of Magnus in a box somewhere?

The shard was consumed in the creation of Janus. Whether it was destroyed, disappeared, transsubstantiated, or some other outcome, is both unknown and open for interpretation (in short, we got no fackin' clue).
