Not sure if this is the appropriate forum or if the Blog one would be better. So if that's the case...please relocate as necessary!

With the new year having come up I decided it was time to start a new army. I'm wanting to get out of my comfort zone and figured what better way to do that then letting others pick what I go with! I posted on Reddit about this, but the upvote/downvote system appears so fickle that I figured some Dakka comments would help.

I won't be giving any input as to what I want to play as I already own that army, but if it happens to be picked...great! Always a few more units I could add to it.

Simple guidelines! The army must be for Warhammer 40K. The army must have a current codex or rules supplement to draw from. The models also need to be able to be picked up from a FLGS or ordered from GW/FW.

I will leave the post active for a few days to get some input before heading on down to the store to grab the start of the new army. This will be a year long project with the goal of each model being painted, based, and unique. So kit bashing/customizing ahoy! As time goes on I will also be looking for more advice on the army such as theme, direction, units, and what not.

Armies where you can get the models? I would look at Ad Mech or Drukhari. Both have unusual and very clear aesthetics, lovely model ranges.

Also voting for Drukhari, they have cool models and their aesthetics differ a lot from other armies.

Other option could be traitor guard. Either played with normal AM rules or with the forge world book. Suggesting this just because it's what I've been day dreaming about

Both great choices. Kind of sad they didn't do more with DE when they released the new plastics.

They really killed it with them! I quite enjoy that large diorama model.

I am hoping they expand on the Blackstone Fortress Chaos range and blow it out into a full Traitor Guard army. Such dope models!

Embrace the might that is the Great Devourer of Worlds. Become one with the SWARM.

A diverse army which not only presents lots of conversion possibilities and unique ideas, but also has some of the most up to date models (with the exception of Sisters of Battle now). They've also got a lot of variety - from building a mixed army; to a force full of huge monsters or one comprised of dozens up gaunts designed to swarm your opponent.

Painting you can also go nuts with if you want or you can keep to a simpler scheme and they still look great.

You can even get really diverse if you ally in Genstealer Cults to join the swarm.

You should dig deep into the bottom of the barrel, pull out the worst faction, & make a functioning force out of it.

So obviously Grey Knights.

Depending on how in hurry OP is that might not be that good idea. The GW is doing them in seriously slow burn mode more suited for existing army owners rather than new players with core units still missing. If he wants to play game within month or two sisters are risky proposition.

Other than that yeah pretty models, fun rules. Not top tournament cheese but then again until marines gets nerfed nothing is.

Orks! Buggies are beautiful models and after their CA point drops a blast to play.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

Beyond the BSF models which are nice, there are A LOT of conversion options out of GSC, IG, etc.

GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

"The worst faction" is in the running. I have no idea what it is though.

Oddly for such a new faction the only other one that gets more hate is Custodes.

Love those BSF traitor models. I expect we will see a whole unique army for them in the future.

Since this is turning into everyone pushing their favorite faction could I suggest you try one of the less popular but interesting legions the Night Lords? Faith and Fury gives them some very good and fluffy rules that allow them to play like they should. And if you like conversions fw has some great options including, in my opinion, the best legion specific contemptor dreadnought. Why not try the legion that's making warp talons great again and the only legion with the balls to say to Abaddon "Oh a new Black Crusade you say? Sorry we've got better things to do. "

If I were starting out fresh, I'd go with something that has a relatively modern plastic line, so basically
  • Dark Eldar
  • Genestealers
  • Thousand Sons
  • Death Guard
  • Sisters of Battle
  • Primaris Space Marines
  • , but definitely not
  • Classic Space Marines
  • Craftworld Eldar
  • Imperial Guard

  • Personally, I'd go with Genestealers; their entire range was released over only a couple of years, so it's both really beautiful, but also really aesthetically coherent.

Added to the list. Due to the way I did the asking it's turned out weird. I initially used two different areas of Reddit thinking that people wouldn't bother if I linked an off site poll. The upvotes/downvotes fluctuate so much it's hard to keep track of between refreshes.

On the list! I'm not super worried about age of models and was really curious to see what people wanted to see done for a year long project. I figured a lot of the votes would go towards "newer" lines, but current Orks are in the lead. Slim margin though.

Strictly in the threads I've been posting about this in. Heavily downvoted. They're sitting at a 0. Custodes are 1. Only other faction that low is Eldar with not even a single mention.
