If this is a continuation of the game series then it ought to be good. Loved those games to bits.

Its not. That was Transformers Prime.

I realize that Aligned was a thing, especially with Aaron Archer's "squint test" debacle, but the creators of the HMS games explicitly stated the game was designed to be "a G1 Prequel" and only had passing ties to the other media solely through Hasbro mandate.

It's actually the opposite. HMS was all on board for the aligned continuity. It was the show runners that wanted to break from the production bible and not be beholden to it. Things in the games are not and never were a part of gen 1. Like Cybertron being sentient. The well of all sparks. Sparks at all. Sparks as a concept didn't appear until Beast Wars. Transformers as life forms didn't appear until much later. Gen 1 they really were just robots and could be dismantled and rebuilt all over the place. Omega Supreme is a great example of the aligned continuity vs the Gen 1 in that hes NOTHING like his gen 1 counterpart.

Pertinent quote from the page:

Adding to the confusion and contradiction were statements made by High Moon Studios themselves, principally ones made to the video gaming press, where the studio went as far as describing the game as a "prequel to the original cartoon series". Rik Alvarez said in 2015 that this was, in fact, the original plan for War,[5] to be a game prequel to a cartoon that it manages to be incompatible with in almost every major way. High Moon calling it a prequel even after it was made part of Aligned was likely due to marketing: the target audience of gamers who would have little knowledge of Hasbro's official canon positions, probably not care, and would like to play a game based on that cartoon they used to watch as a kid with the cool truck guy.

When asked about the contradictions, Hasbro VP of Intellectual Property Development Aaron Archer replied, "reasons for the confusion will be revealed".[6] In at least one small case, Hasbro has taken a stab at reconciliation, declaring Optimus Prime's predecessor in the games, "Zeta Prime", and the one in the novel, "Sentinel Prime", to be the same individual, "Sentinel Zeta Prime".

At a 2015 convention in Charlotte, Rik Alvarez claimed that the Aligned plan had been compromised from the start: while High Moon Studios were on board, the Prime creators didn't want to be tied to previous material (and have themselves said they wanted to get away from the "Binder of Revelation" and do their own thing[19] and the studio, not fully controlled by Hasbro, was unfamiliar with most of the lore); IDW Publishing couldn't shift to a mostly-Aligned schedule for logistical reasons. The original idea for the MMOG fell apart due to constant team changes; Universe made it into beta testing three years late and never got off the ground; the Universe team later declared that their game was not part of the Aligned continuity at all. He made a further claim that Prime was going overbudget and that Rescue Bots was plonked into Aligned continuity by the studio against the "Binder of Revelation".

While all elements of War for Cybertron fiction are based on the Aligned production bible, the creators of the various media products diverged from each other in many details. The events of the video games overlap with much of Exodus, and the results mesh poorly. However, Hasbro has consistently described as a single continuity not just the games and novel, but the Prime fiction as well.[4] This brings up issues such as the fact that Bumblebee and Soundwave are very Generation 1-inspired in War for Cybertron and can speak words, but they're portrayed in the Prime cartoon as quasi-mute. Cartoon Bumblebee in particular is very much like his live-action movie incarnation, speaking in electronic beeps and squawks. The aforementioned "Bumblebee at Tyger Pax" story attempts to explain this change, but the retcon occurs before the game events, so the contradiction remains.

War for Cybertron's sequel, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron takes some steps to better mesh with the fictional universe it belongs to. Alvarez said High Moon were up for making changes to fit with the glorious five-year Aligned plan.[7]

Again, it started as a G1 prequel. When the people who made it say so, it doesn't matter how much corporate walkback happens. I'm sure them being "up for making changes" had quite a bit to do with losing the contract if they didn't.

Forgive the necro, but I figured it might be helpful to mention part one goes live on Netflix tomorrow (Thursday.)

Just watched the series it's pretty good. is it the series I'd have designed if I was tasked to write it? No, but I think what I woulda done would have been too... politcally focused and seen as kinda dull (the early days of the autobot/decepitcon movement, Megatron's slow descent into fascism etc.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

It's better then most transformers shows. But I still think the peek transformers media has been Transformers Prime.

I like the story, the designs, and some of the scenes. The voice acting is terrible though and while the designs for the characters are gorgeous, the sets and animations are... Not.

I liked it, happily looking forward to the next chapters.

Lots of little references and manages to slot into the original G1 story quite cleverly. Rather dark, but nowhere nearly as dark as the Hardwired novel that I read years ago; no fleshlings getting turned into salsa, for one thing... Ah well, there's still time.

I thought that the voice acting was fine for the most part. Jake Foushee filled Peter Cullen's shoes far better than I thought he would, although I nearly cried when he shouted at Chromia! Optimus doesn't shout at people! I know he's under a bit of stress, but having Optimus shout is like having your dad shout at you when you're 8 years old. Maybe I need a therapist...

The only voice acting that I thought didn't like was Soundwave's and Shockwave's. Soundwave, because if it isn't an exact facsimile of the G1 cartoon, it's a failure. Shockwave, because nobody has ever got him right - although to be fair, I grew up with the UK Transformers comic which tends to result in a bit of Shockwave adoration.

I finished this and... it's OK, but it has some issues.

The good:
The actual animation is beautiful, generally.
The plot starts off slow, but it gets there.
Really cool to see the G1 characters animated in this manner.

The bad:
Some of the dialogue is clunky and just... bad. If I took a shot every time someone referenced "this war" I'd be dead by the third episode.
Some of the voice acting is quite bad. Optimus Prime in particular sounds right, but his delivery is very slow and laden with faux gravitas.

The ugly:
They explain very little of what happened prior to the events at the start of the series. A lot of it is fleshed out via conversational references to past events, but honestly even as someone who has watched most of the Transformers properties, I have no idea what precipitated the war from watching the series.

It became clear fast that they had a fixed number of character models available. You will see about 400 iterations of "generic deception model".

Spoiler:
Optimus Prime as a war criminal wasn't something I was hoping to see, but that's 2020 for you.

I enjoyed it for nostalgia reasons, but if I wasn't a fan of the original show when I was little, I doubt I would have liked this one. But either way that said I'll tune in for season 2 and see what's next.

I do like that they seem to be focusing on the inbetween times. Not the full on war. Not exodus. But the aftermath of the war on cybertron. Pre exodus. Post full war.

Anyone manage to catch Earthrise?

I'm not as impressed as I was with Siege, seems like an awful lot of stuff was thrown in there for the memberberries. Bits teased and hinted at that they didn't follow through on.

Looking back at it, I'm constantly reminded of Red Letter Media's observations on Rogue One: Remember Darth Vader?! OMG! AT-STs! AT-STs! OMG! X-Wings! Star Destroyers!

Characters and locations all over the place that people of my age will be thinking "Hey, I remember that! Cool... let's see what-"

And then you're onto the next thing before anything can come of it.
