I'm making an Ork armored spearhead unit and I'm thinking about giving a Big Mek in Mega Armour a Kombi-Skorcha. on one hand I like that if you fire both weapons (shoota and skorcha) the skorcha will hit automatically while the shoota hits on a 6+. but on the other hand the Skorcha doesn't have a close combat feature like the Burna so its range is just 2-8".

My Big Mek in Mega Armour will be charging in to close combat with two Deff Dreads so he will certainly be close to the enemy. but im wondering how often the situation will arise that he will be 2-8" from the enemy without already attempting to charge? I have him equipped with Da Killa Klaw so he's well suited for close combat. my other option would be to equip him with a Kustom Shoota or a Kombi-Rokkit to give him more dakka while trying to get into close combat.

All in all I'm just curious, how useful do you find the Ork Skorcha and Kombi-Skorcha?

Skorcha is useful if you are charged (d6 auto hits, s5, etc), but who would charge two Deff Dreads?

I'd be tempted to give him a KFF, or just the cheapest points option Kustom Shoota.

Problem with the Kombi-Skorcha is that it costs too much for very little gain. You're gonna average 3.5 hits with it, against T4 you'll see 2.33 Wounds, and against a 3+ Save, just 1.66 damage. The Shoota Profile will net you even less damage, with 0.06 damage against the same target (assuming you're firing both). So, for less than 2 damage a Shooting phase, you're spending 17 pts. Just not a good deal. You're better off keeping your MA Mek with the KMB.

doesn’t overwatch use weapon ranges now? Doesn’t that mean against cc armies (which tend to have a way to extend charges) it won’t get to shoot overwatch so often?

Wait for the next PA book featuring Orks. They may get something to make flamers worth it.

Regular Skorchas have some utility if only for making people try for the long charges, but the Kombi-Skorcha is too expensive for what it gives you.

That said it's really solid on anything you want to run with as it's assault and doesn't roll to hit so you can run up, flame a hole in a screen and then possibly charge through it to the stuff behind it (just keep a Warboss nearby so you can do the run and charge).

Yes, but then they have a harder charge roll.
