Hey everyone, kind of a small and strange question but I want to work on documenting my collection and would like some advice. I see in many signatures people will put the number of points that they own of a certain army like (Raven Guard 1500 points) etc. When you guys do this, do you count upgrades? For example, adding support systems for Tau or making a model cost the most it can? Or do you just count the base price for everything and use that as the number?

Thanks!

I count WYSWYG as modeled. For hidden upgrades, or models that can fill multiple roles, I go with what I most frequently play it as.

I do an approximate average from a rough min/max estimate.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

I just do WYSWYG as modeled, because that's enough to remind me I have way too many Orks.

This primarily. Things get a little weird because I have alternates for lots of Heavy Weapons, so there will be an total number, but then a slightly reduced "field-able" number.

Usually as run, which disincludes models that cant be fielded.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

I think everybody counts differently, but I think that "wargear inflation" defeats at least some of the purpose of the exercise. If, at the end of your tally, you reach 9,987 points, you know that you can probably find 13 points of wargear. Inflating 1300pts to 1500pts with oodles of suspect gear is a significant change.

In practice, I usually add up the points based on WYSIWYG, but for my IG (20k or so), honestly it's tough to get beyond base models and weapons. Adding up how many power swords I have on my commissars is not a great use of my time, so I usually just estimate low and move on.

1987pts.

I use points when I play, but for a rough estimate for the size of my collection I’ve started using Power Level so that the individual load-outs etc don’t matter.

I’ve got enough spare sarges that my spares from the swap shelf form up into extra dev or command squads. But my tally does include some illegal squads, like terminators squads with 3 heavy weapons.

If I'm counting total points owned I don't care about having more than a rough idea in the first place, so I'm counting min-squads and rounding from there. Tacs, Intercessors, Incursors, Scouts, small tanks, characters, whatever, 100 each. Dreads 150. Big tanks 300.

I've got over 10,000 points of marines, I don't care about the hundreds place, you know?

Nope. It matters more to me that I can field an army than how many points I have. My total points of forces of the Hive Mind and Chaos are pretty phenomenal.

Simple; for my armies I generally build and cost out units that I rarely change. I have a "unit sheet" that includes all of the units I can field in each army...and their calculated cost.

For units with swappable weapons I just pick one and add it in - so there is a variation between tank weapons and some magnetized dreadnought arms, etc....but essentially I build my army in units and add them up. And yes I do it old school with pen and paper and a calculator. I don't like software getting involved with my tabletop gaming.

I don't. It's in the many 000s so I would rather build paint & play than count.

When the pile of shame is zero, however..... who knows?

Same for me. And very much not counting how many points are stuck in that pile

Well, i just put the points for all my WYSIWYG models in a spread sheet of shorts and it tells me what points i have.

The last time I totaled my tau, I counted the models that I had. The fact that I have so much magnetized helped to increase the total, as did the fact that I try to keep my vehicles modular too. By modular, I mean that the nose mount is magnetized and the rest of the model can be modular as well. In different games it can be a Devilfish, a hammerhead, a skyray, or a fire support\bombardment hammerhead, depending on what turret\cupola is on the hill for that game.

Thanks to the way that the points are set up, it is easier than ever to do it this way.

Points as modelled.

So if a squad sgt has a non-standard weapon (if it comes with a cc wpn, but I've given it a power weapon, etc) - points get added as for that upgrade.

I once got to 12,000 pts for my marines (full company plus support elements and multiple transport options for most of it) and about 11,000 for my eldar (fewer vehicles, but also included a Phantom titan from Armorcast).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

I add them up as I most commonly use them. So a Fire Prism would be priced as having a Shuriken Cannon upgrade and that's it.

I keep a roster in Battlescribe of how many points are fully painted and playable. When I complete a unit, I add it to the roster along with wargear and options that I would typically take in a game.

Actually, I do two rosters: one for 40k and one for Apocalypse. The power levels of the two games do not match.

This, but multiply by 20 for Points total.

Can’t be arsed to work out individual points for 10k+ points of Orks, so for a rough total, Power x 20 does the job.

Ooh! Does anyone include unpainted in the total? If so, I want to include my bits box :-)

Since 8th started I mostly tell people how much I have in PL since it mostly includes all the wargear in the price.

If I say in points I add it up in rough estimates. not inclyding wargear.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

I think before Primaris I had wysiwyg 7k maybe 8k at the start of 8th, but we've had a decent amount of point drops since so it might only be 6k for example. It's ultimately useless information. But I honestly might do an inventory this weekend, so I might post here with a number

Well, you’d be a better man than me!

Can’t imagine having to cross reference Index, Codex, CA and possibly PA for 6 - 8k Marines :-)

That’s what BattleScribe is for. You do need to check old rosters from time to time, as some back end changes mean you need to update things. Normally I just make note of the errors and go fix the units affected.
