Hi there! So for context I'm collecting my first proper 40k army and have recently gotten the "Start collecting Vanguard space marines" box to help me on my way. I've heard that vanguard marines have gotten a mixed reception from more seasoned players but I love the concept of them and want to make use of this box set on top of what I already have. Some of these models have yet to be assembled and I've yet to lock down a chapter so this list is pretty malleable.

The objective: To make a 1000pt Primaris list (preferably for raven guard or Imperial fists) It won't be going to tournaments so it doesn't need to worry about that kind of meta but I would like to make a strong army that can win its share of games. My main concern is how it will deal with heavy armour.

Locked in units:

1 x Phobos Captain

1 x Phobos Lieutenant (can be removed from final list)

1 x Infiltrator squad

1 x Intercessor squad

1 x Suppressor squad

1 x Eliminator squad (mono-posed with bolt sniper rifles)

The rest is up in the air as I want to have a solid idea of where the army is going so I don't spend money and time on units I then never use or regret getting)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Working list - Battalion 1000pt 50PL

Raven Guard - Battle Forged (Total 8CP)

HQ

Captain in Phobos Armour - Marksman honours, Master of the trifold path - Master of ambush, Equipped with Korvidari Bolts (99pt 5PL)

Lieutenant in Phobos Armour - Occulus bolt carbine (81pt 5PL

Troops

1 x Infiltrator - 5 man squad with helix adept (120pt 5PL)

1 x Infiltrators - 5 man squad with Comms Array (120pt 5 PL)

1 x Intercessor - 10 man squad, bolt rifles, 1 Aux grenade launcher (171pt 10PL)

Elites

1 x Aggresor Squad - 3 man squad, boltstorm gauntlets (111pts 5PL)

1 x Invictor Tactical warsuit - Twin Ironhail Autocannon (136pt 6PL)

Fast Attack

1 x Suppressor squad (90pt 4PL)

Heavy Support

1 x Eliminator squad - bolt sniper rifles (72pt 4PL)

Total (1,000pts 49PL)

Constructive criticism and tips welcome.

Looks like a fun list. What's your battle plan? Captain with suppressors and eliminators in cover somewhere? Strategem to give aggressors a free 9" move? The rest infiltrate?

Do you think the kovidari bolts are better than the armor or ex Tenebris? Tenebris is powerful on a lieutenant since it replaces his rifle and gives +1 to hit. It has 3 shots and can target characters. Alternatively you could spend a cp to give the lieutenant master of Ambush to shuffle him and the aggressors up close with the invictor for a very scary surprise.

I'm also heavily considering raven guard for my primaris force, using 2 shadowspear boxes as the backbone and 12 aggressors as the threat.

I;m new to building lists too, and until very recently was planning on building an RG list.

So basically, Eliminators are Auto-takes and you really want to max them out. They are just so, so good. that you want 9 of them. They are amazing as RG and probably the best value-for-points elites choices for any space marines factions in the game.

After thinking about it a lot, I actually think they are better kitted out with Las Fusils. The specialist ammo is a bit deceptive; it looks better on paper, but tends to perform considerably worse in practicum. S8 -3 AP Flat 3 damage is just so, so much more reliable, and is going to cause more wounds against higher toughness targets.

Here's the thing; For 130 points, you can get 10 sniper scouts that can target characters at the same range. They can also be set up anywhere due to concealed positions.. For 3 extra points, you can give them camo cloaks, which adds 2 to saving throws With shadow masters, they are going to be -1 to hit. But that would bring them up to 160 points--which is much more expensive than 3 eliminators with las who are certainly going to pull their weight more.

Las fusils have a 36 inch range, also. 9 S8 AP-3 3D shots at 36 inch range is amazing. If your opponent chooses to ignore them for a turn, or fails to take them out, it's a big, big problem for them. It's true that they can't target characters, but against vehicles and anything T8 they are going to do a lot more work.

With all due respect Las-fusil is going to eat into your points and as a Primaris army that’s not what you’re looking for. I’ve been running Bolter version for a while now and they need to be targeting characters for three rounds as Raven Guard. After that it’s gravy. You want an overly expensive anti tank unit go Plasma Inceptors or Hellblasters SftS. They’re underpowered as the las-fusil but they have a clear mission objective.

Being able to target characters in 8th is a gift that should t be wasted by a Raven Guard player.

I concede they're expensive, but they're also going to make their points back. That isn't to say the Bolt Sniper Rifle isn't excellent value, it is. Amazing profiles for 3 points. But the las fusils are going to consistently deliver more wounds against more stuff purely by virtue of their strength and damage profile, and this is compounded by invulnerable saves. Hellblasters and Plasma inceptors don't have flat 3D and they also can't get to the same saving throw profile. Las fusils can kind of do it all.

Regardless, either is good. Personally I'd favor reliability over the perk. However, for only a little over a dozen more points than the price of 9 Fusils, you could get an Impulsor which IMO is the best value for the points Primaris unit, probably only second to the thunderfire cannon, of all space marines options. I think it depends on list size. They're probably too points heavy for a 1K list, which is what OP was asking about, so I'd have to agree that Bolt sniper rifles are better for his list.
