Subject: Tyranid Army - paint selection help request
I am today starting my adventure with WH40k. I am total beginner - yet had contact with people who painted/played game for a long time.
I would like to ask you, to help/propose what paints should I get (as I have no clue about color names and stuff) to achieve similar effect is in attachment.
It's 100% sure that I won't get effect same as this but I would like it to be similar.
How I plan to paint this - using brush:
1. Paint figure in one color which probably should be some bluish green. It probably should be somehow light to extent when you look a it from far you can notice it's green not black.
2. Use dark green wash, close to black.
3. Dry-brushing layers like 1-2 with lighter colors.
4. Brown carapaces.
5. Highlighting carapaces on the edges to achieve "bonelike gradient".
6. Highlighting most visible body parts (e.g. on cheeks etc).
7. Final effects like eyes, tongue, and those very glowing, green membranes.
Anyone could recommend to me how could I get closer to this color palette?
Thanks for understanding.

What should be the lightness of green color that I will put on black color in comparison to blue wash?
Should the green be somehow light so the blue can darken it? If green will be too dark then blue won't be visible I think.

Tyranids tend to be horde armies. You will do yourself a favour by keeping your colour scheme as simple as possible, as you'll be repeating it possibly over a hundred times...
With that in mind, I'd really suggest looking at the Contrast paints. You could paint the body in something like Akhelian Green / Leviadon Blue / Dark Angels Green, and then the carapace in Skeleton Horde, and you'd be more or less done.

Duncan disagrees with you on basing dark models on dark bases (and vice versa) as seen at the 30 second mark...

Yes. And Duncan is right in most examples, but not here. The reason Duncan gives is not what you are looking for in this colourscheme. Duncan wants to get a dark light contrast (or warm cold.)
The reson for this is closer to the sulfmato teqnique (spell that how you want it.) As can be seen in the Mina Lisa.
If you put more big bright colour surfaces near those dark and green tones you eye will see less of the suptle blends, and if you do not put those whites next to dark surfaces you will not be as hypnoticed by the suple transitions between the shades of bones.
But by all means. Spend a lott of times doing suptle blending and put it on a bright red base for maximum contrast.
Sorry, but this miniature is just too dark to have a dark base.
