Congrats a battle barge came into our Solar System and you were detected as compatible to Astartes convertion procedure, and now you are given an offer. Join the Astartes. Will you take it? You would get regular leaves to Earth to visit your loved ones.

I don't think that castration happens to Space Marines. Also, the Salamanders get to visit their families.

Yeah but they might as well be castrated. Anyway the salamanders are the exception not the rule, most SM chapters make you swear off your finer life and forget it during their conversion to becoming an astartes

I mean most Astartes aren't asked, they are kids made into gods, but I reckon so, they don't get castrated, they just have no sex drive (Emperors Children not withstanding...Yeesh) and depending on the Chapter you can still be part of "society" and not just spend all your time as a Marine, I mean Space Wolves are basically super soldier Vikings, they live it up better than most.

Thinking about it, doesn't Bjorn notice how attractive a woman is post Dreadnought, maybe Wolves even keep some sex drive.

Especially the whoring part, since most Astartes outside of Slaaneshis don't partake of those sins of the flesh, given they're both physically and mentally neutered there in that sense Not to mention that Astartes physiology is efficient at filtering toxins enough that they can't get drunk on conventional alcohol, so there's two things he's wrong about.

I believe they remain aware that someone is attractive but don't actually feel anything towards them.

Its dubious for Slaaneshi marines as well. They seem to go to greater lengths in other areas (like rocking out, snuff films, honor/death bouts and torture), perhaps because they can't indulge in practical sex.

Or because they just want sensation, which is the point of Slaanesh. Excessive sensations and desires for everything. It's not just about sex like a lot of the community treats it.

it would make sense they might understand asthetically how someone, male of female could be considered beautiful but pretty much all would have no desire or inclination (or time) to waste time on more than a vague appeciation - you might get say a Blood Angel wanting to paint or sculpt someone etc.

As usualy some fo the Wolves lore marks them out as different - pa rtially because some have actaulyl had sexual relations before becoming a Marine and also as one of the codexs mentions several make drunken passes at local women causing an incident - this could however be just going throuhg the motions or even them just wanting to start a fight (to set up a fight as they did in 13th Warrior )

On the OP - would I join them probably not - you are remade into a different person for one thing.

Hard pass.

I didn't join the military in real life for a variety of reasons, I don't see a compelling reason why I'd sign up to be a Space Marine, especially with no end-date on that contract. They're fun concepts to play with in a miniatures game, but I'd have zero desire to be part of that in reality.

Rick Priestley was likewise perplexed over how other game designers looked up to Space Marines, despite being brutal. They were psychotic brainwashed killers from the very start of 40k, how could anyone miss it?

Yet violence sings in our blood. Almost all humans are descended from warlike peoples, and our cultures are all permeated by martial values and heroic ideals which make perfect sense in war. Courage, loyalty, hiding one's fear and frailties.

It is branded into our souls. It is no mystery why boys in particular play knights, pirates and soldiers. Part of us longs for the cruel exhilaration and glorious horror of combat. Part of us longs for the risk and the chance to prove ourselves. For the knife's edge moments of danger when you are truly alive.

We all dream of this, even if we have little true desire for it.

As to the topic at hand: Hell no! These world are fun to visit for a game and a story, but we wouldn't want to live there.

the thing is they're not presented as anymore psyotic then anyone else in 40k. and the idea of a human ascending to a divine status to fight for humanity is a pretty old one. hell it's part of campell's heroic cycle.

I think for people to willingly join the Astartes you'd need a good amount of ignorance of the danger (which we don't have) and/or propaganda/brainwashing to see it as an 'honour' etc. Maybe if we were generations after being taken into the Imperium of Mankind, we'd be more likely to. I dunno, there's a good reason why Space Marine chapter recruit mostly from death worlds/feudal worlds as we in our 1st world luxuries wouldn't have the hard life to strengthen us not just to survive the transition but even to survive the brutal trials of initiation. Maybe if they took children from Syria or something, I dunno lol
