So I am back painting and building my guys haven’t played since 4ed. I am planning on expanding my army with some hellblasters but the problem is I can’t find there data sheets in the codex or the ritual of the dam men’s book if you could point me in the right direction I would be much appreciated. Also any advice on my list would be appreciated.

Thank you happy war gameing

You will need to buy the Dark Angels Codex for the Hellblaster datasheets as well as most of the other Dark Angel units. The box of Hellblasters itself, though, has the baseline data sheet. You should still get the DA Codex.

You can't use them without Azrael. They absolutely need the 4++ against several targets.

I don't have a page number handy, but here's your reading list in terms of Dark Angel's rules:

Gathering the Informations.

You can ignore a good chunk of that pretty easily. Vanguard Marines stuff is in Ritual of the Damned, Legends is only needed if you're using stuff that isn't in the codex and no idea why in the world the Termite is listed other than probably some gimmicky list from a tournament.

You also don't need the most recent Marines codex as a Dark Angels player, because Dark Angels is an independent codex. Vigilus is also "specialist detachments", which aren't necessarily a thing you're required to own.

No I do not think the DA (or Space Wolves, or Blood Angels for that matter) will be getting a new codex anytime soon. Could be wrong, but I'm likely not.

All you really need is the main rule book, Codex: DA, the Psychic Awakening book that applies to the force, the FAQs/Erratas for the game/& those two books, & the current pts (found in Chapter Approved 2019).
Everything else? Optional. You only need it if/when you get around to using it.

The rules you need are on P.115 of the current codex btw.

It’s not even correct. DA expressly can’t use the regular SM Codex.

Just pick up the 8th Codex and Ritual of the Damned. That’ll have all the units and options you need, for the most part.

Latest Chapter Approved will update your points, or use BattleScribe for now.

He forgot to list codex angels of death (2nd edition) codex dark angels 4th edition and codex dark angels 6th edition since he's apparently listing everything under the sun including obseleted content

You can have a perfectly serviceable game with just Codex Dark Angels. Though it will be a missing a few of the newer units (but will have your Hellblasters!) and the points will be a bit off here and there. The poster is trying to make some sort of a point or is somehow unaware of how that sort of a post will put people off getting into the game.

All you need is the 8th Edition Dark Angels Codex that came out in late 2017 and Ritual of the Dammed to have the datasheets, points, stratagems, relics, psychic powers and warlord traits to play. There are indeed some FAQs but they are free. If you have Forge World stuff then you also need those books but they are going through a re-write.

There is a Dark Angels thread in the Tactics sub-forum. Post what you have am done some folks will offer their thoughts. If you have a 4th Ed DA army then adding a unit of Hellblasters is not a bad start to your update.

Cheers

Fixed. Technically, you don't need CA2019 either, if you use BattleScribe to build lists like everyone else.

You need CA19 for the Missions, Matched Play Rules and Updated Terrain Rules.

none of which are nesscary. remember not everyone's goal is to go to tournies, what's nesscary to play at a tourny and what's nesscary if you're getting back into the game to play in your garage with your buddies are differant things.

Soon is relative. There's a rumored "new edition" for 40k this summer, in the lines of how Age of Sigmar got a 2.0 version rather than a whole new edition entirely and if that's the case we'd likely see a lot of the material from Psychic Awakening(which is very much showing itself to be in the lines of stuff that would be in new codices) translating into new codices.

Also, Marines didn't "just" get a new codex. It was back in August but seems closer because of the supplement books being dragged out.

No Codexes from 7th or earlier are useable in 8th edition. It was a full reset.

Get the free base rules and 8th Ed DA Codex for starters to seed how your current collection translates. Then add Ritual of the Damned.

You don't.

You only NEED the core rules (which are free), and the respective Codex (and even then, if you have access to the datasheets of units via their building instructions, oftentimes you can just use the printed PL and datasheet). Matched Play isn't the only way to play, nor do you NEED points. Now, that doesn't mean that people in your local area play that way, but that's still only one of many "approved" ways to play.

Not everyone needs to play with the most recent FAQs, updates, and points values. As long as you understand the core rules and have models capable of interacting with those rules (so pre-8th datasheets won't work, as they don't have a Move stat, have an Initiative value instead, and their BS/WS systems don't work under modern rules), you can play.

They/them

wow, this is so disingenuous and unhelpful when you have a new player asking for help. Almost all of that is not needed, and you know it.

You need the Dark Angels codex and Ritual of the Damned, period (you need the latter for the most up to date copy of points).
Chapter Approved is a nice add on to get more missions, access to points for other armies etc, but you don't need it.

I literally copied that list from a rules site it's what they use to build out their DA rules database. So, if you want all the rules for your army so you can consider all of your options, that's still a useful list.

-Chapter Approved ’2019 Expansion February 2020
-Warhammer Legends: Dark Angels Dataslate December 2019
-Psychic Awakening: Ritual of the Damned Expansion February 2020

Of these:
-Imperium 1 Index is obsolete, and shouldn't have any necessary rules anymore.
-Dark Angels Codex September 2019 is required, since you haven't had a new codex
-Chapter Approved is also obsolete, and shouldn't have any necessary rules anymore. CA contains points updates, mission packs, and narrative/open play gaks-and-giggles stuff. The stuff that matters [missions and points] are obsolete after the next CA.
-Forge World: Termite Assault Drill Dataslate If you're using a Termite, you need this. Otherwise, you don't.
-Chapter Approved ’2018 Once again there's been a more recent CA, so unless you care about narrative/open play only custom character rules, you don't need this.
-Imperium Nihilus: Vigilus Defiant This has some formations that might be useful, allowing you to pay CP to unlock some stratagems.
-Vanguard Space Marines This is a pamphlet issued in Shadowspear. Everything has been reprinted since, and this is basically unobtainable anyway.
-Games Workshop: Battle Tanks and Troop Transports Rules Preview Dataslate. Like the Vanguard pamphlet. Also, I think these rules previews don't count as official sources anyway, so uh... don't count on them.
-Repulsor Executioner Update Like the Vanguard pamphlet.
-Space Marines II Codex This isn't your codex, I don't see why you would need it.
-Chapter Approved ’2019 This is the most recent CA, you need this for your current points and missions.
-Warhammer Legends: Dark Angels Dataslate This is an index of units that are no longer legal for competitive play because they are old and the models are discontinued. You do not need this in general, but it is a free download if you even want to use them again in friendly games.
-Psychic Awakening: Ritual of the Damned Expansion This should have all the stuff for you that's in Codex:SM2, the Vanguard pamphlet, etc. as well as new stratagems and stuff. You definitely need this.

So that basically narrows it down to:
Codex Dark Angels
Psychic Awakening
CA2019
and Vigilus Defiant
You probably should buy the codex, CA, and PA, and while Vigilus has current and usable rules, it's something to put on your list for later probably.

Also, free downloads include Termite Assault Drill and Warhammer Legends.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!
