Hi guys,

This might be a little random. I know very little about 40k, but we're in a lockdown so I'm cleaning out my closets. During this i found an old school Tyranids army, which should be a fun little project to paint up.

Now my question for you; can I make any kind of legal army out of these mini's, or is it really hopless?

This is what I found:

- 6x Termagaunts with Spike Rifle
- 6x Termagaunts with Fleshborer
- 7x Hormagaunts
- 4x Warriors (with Venom Cannon, Devourer and Spinefist)
- 16x Genestealers
- Hive Tyrant
- Biovore
- 3x Spore Mine
- Lictor
- Zoanthrope
- Carnifex

And maybe you can also tell me the base size of the different models, since most of these are still on square bases...

You can! Idk that'd be any good but you have a HQ and a troop choice.

I don't know the point value off hand, and I don't expect it to win any games without expanding the collection. But it's playable

. 6x Termagant (Fleshborer): 6x Fleshborer
. 6x Termagant (Spike Rifle): 6x Spike Rifle [Legends]

Tyranid Warriors [9 PL, 96pts]
. Tyranid Warrior: Devourer, Scything Talons
. Tyranid Warrior: Devourer, Scything Talons

Theres a few really solid units in there, and a few kind of meh ones. But for a starting force, I think you're off to a good start!

A few notes on the list I made:
Hormagaunts are minimum 10 models, so you cant use what you have currently.
Termagant Spike Rifles are 'Legends'. Which basically means they are a legacy option and not considered a core part of the game. I've included them, as if you are coming into this as a new player playing casual games I would hope people wouldnt have a problem with it - but mileage may vary!
You can't take a single Zoanthrope, they are minimum 3. But I have put a Nuerothrope in the list, as it's a reasonable counts as that people shouldnt have a problem with, with the same caveat as above!
I've assumed it's the really old Carnifex and Hive Tyrant models to guess wargear, so they might need changing up. The Screamer-Killer is essentially the original Carnifex.

If I were to expand this to a 1000pt list with minimum purchases, I would probably get a box of Hormagants to make a legal unit, and a box of Hive Guard with Impaler Cannons as they're just a really strong unit. Fiddle around with wargear and that should be about 1k.

Thanks for the advice. I'm using the really old mini's, so adding a box isn't really an option:

Can you also tell me the base sizes for these guys? I might just paint up a couple of them for fun. The Hormagaunts are really cool models!

Use the Zoanthrope as a Neurothrope and you got a Battalion

A Neurothrope is essentially a character version of a Zoanthrope. The model is very similar (made from the same kit, just a few bits different).

As I said above, you cant use a single Zoanthrope so best to use him as a Nuero! Neurothrope are really good too.

As for Battalions - units in 8e 40k are organised into various detachments. The most used detachment is the Battalion. Different detachments have different requirements. A Battalion requires 2 HQ choices and 3 Troop choices. Along with the Hive Tyrant, if you use the Zoanthrope as a Neurothope you will have the 2 HQs required to fill the Battalion.

The current Zoanthrope kit GW sells can make 3 Zoanthropes or 2 Zoantrhropes and a Neurothrope. Since the list had a Neurothrope unit but no zoathropes you can just tell your opponent that it's a neurothrope.

I don't know if you have the 8th edition rules, but for matched play (the way most people play), you have to have a battle-forged army. This would be one or more detachments meeting certain criteria. The Battalion detachment has a requirement of 2 HQ choices, so you would want to have the Neurothrope as a 2nd HQ.

If you remember the old force organization chart. 2 hq, 3 elite,6 troop, 3 heavy,3 fast attack, and I think the min was 1hq, 2 troops. 8th edition allows multiple force organization charts, and you have like 10 of them, so you can make wacky lists now. The battalion is the most like the original force org chart. min 2 hq, 3 troops, and the max is just like the old chart, but up to 3hq are allowed.

I found someone who's selling some more old school Tyranids. What would be my best add for this army? Some Hormagaunts to finish the unit ofcourse, but after that?

And can you guys also tell me what the base sizes of the bigger models are? What bases should Warriors have? Same question for Zoathropes/Biovores/Carnifex/Lictor.

Base sizes can be found on GW website, in the units description.

Some tyranid models have changed base sizes over time, so have multiple possible sizes you can use.

Warriors are most often seen on 40mm bases, but have been packaged with 50mm bases.
Zoanthropes are on 40mm bases.
The current Biovore model was originally on a 40mm base, but is now packaged with a 60mm base.
Carnifexes can be on 60mm round bases, or more recently on 70x105mm oval bases.
Lictors are on 40mm bases.
