I would begin with "A thousand sons" and then the Ahriman series after that: https://www.blacklibrary.com/all-products/ahriman-collection-ebook.html

Definitely start with A Thousand Sons. It's still my favorite HH novel.

Keep in mind that the Ahriman series is focused on half a dozen or so characters (including non-Thousand Sons) and not the Legion. There are points when Ahriman himself feels like a secondary character.
It's interesting, but (not spoiling anything) if you're looking for a broad look at the Legion, you're going to walk away disappointed or confused.

I've generally heard good things about Battle of the Fang, if anyone here can comment on it. Might as well talk about the books if we're talking about the books. I haven't gotten to The Crimson King yet from HH either.

I enjoyed Battle of the Fang but it's a LOT of pure fighting so it's largely not plot heavy.

In that case he should just buy their codex.

If you want post heresy works you’re in a bind. Ahriman is the most publicized 1000 Son but his schtick was being exiled from said legion for 10,000 years, saying you can’t control me tzeentch, and then being controlled by tzeentch. Ahriman has his own trilogy, appeared in some very old Black Library inquisitor novels, and oddly enough in C S Gotto’s Blood Ravens Omnibus.
The next best one is Khayon the Black who joined with the Black Legion. His Rubricae and sorcery feature heavily so it’s not too far removed but he also is not indicative of the the 1000 Sons after the Heresy.
Almost anything else unfortunately will only feature them as the villains of the story where they will have little screen time. They will also not survive because they are the villains.

I think I ranted about this in another thread, but Battle of the Fang is not the thousand sons at their best. One stormcaller casts a spell and you have thousands of sorcerers unable to do anything but stare in amazement as they all get killed. And Magnus gets his ass kicked because he forgets he’s the wizard primarch.
Everyone else is right about the Ahriman series not being that focused on the legion, but I think they’re my favorite 40k books so far.

It's kind of interesting to see how the Seigemaster has a numerology fixation, and then the Death Guard Seigemaster likewise having one.
