Who remembers the 3rd Edition Deffkopta? I was so excited when the Armageddon/Speed Freaks codex came out, and I needed the deffkopta immediately. I bought one, assembled it, and used it in my next game. First turn I flew it to the tip of the 18" high centerpiece of the table, where it was ignored for the rest of the game by my opponent, who wasn't scared of a twin-linked big shoota at BS 2. I didn't field the deffkopta again. A few weeks later while in queue to get painted, I knocked it off the desk and it smashed like a pewter Wraithlord. The plastic deffkoptas came out in 5th edition, and the old Deffkopta was forever relegated to the bits bin.
Cut to last week: I'm wrapping up about a half dozen Deathskulls projects, and I'm hit with this image of a really janky deffkopta floating above the mob. What better use for this (fairly crummy) old model, than as a colour piece for a Deathskulls warband? So somewhat impulsively I dove in, gave it rokkits, a (handheld) big bomm, and a magnetized killsaw option. I used one of the old gorkamorka torsos, otherwise the pilot would have been too tall for the blades. I'm not terribly happy with the pose, but I really didn't plan this one; I did each mod at a time and didn't overthink it. For sturdiness I used a brass stand and coated the base with pennies. The Kopta, stand, and base are all removable for easy storage and potential lols if I ever decide to use it as some kind of ground vehicle.

These are awesome! You have a ton of creative skill, obviously, but your magnet work/planning is what's really on point IMO. Well done.

Thanks, Gomez! The magnetization is a necessity: too many editions have come and gone over the years and I just got sick of hard work being forced into obsolescence!

Two meks and a cybork nob. The Meks have magnetized right arm options including two sluggas, a killsaw, and a burna. Cybork slugga arm is scratch built. One mek is a spanner form Gorkamorka (I think in 3rd edition the same model was sold as a mek under 40k) and the other is a 2nd Edition Mek with a flame thrower. The cybork Nob is made from a million different things, including a chaos possessed marine arm, bass guitar strings, an old plasma pistol, an old pewter grot pistol, old dread/kan saws, the backside of a rokkit launcher, the arm from some epic 40k chaos war machine, a black ork helm, the breathey part at the front is a space marine backpack exhaust, and there's all manner of kustom bits from plasticard and greenstuff as well. I really wish I took a photo before I primed him.

Here's a wORK in progress shot of my cybork paint job. I'm actually struggling with it at bit, if anybody wants to pitch in some ideas I would be eternally grateful.

Honestly looks fine. You could maybe try to find some more contrast on the grey metal, possibly with a chrome or aluminum edge highlight (or washing down with black/nuln oil, but that runs the risk of looking just messy and not helping), but the blue looks pretty solid.

Yeah, I agree it's looking quite good! A little contrast to the metal would probably work

Waiting for my next batch of paints to come in before I can make any progress on the other projects I've shared. In the meantime...

Fifteen years ago I kit bashed Ork boys with Pit Fighters to make 9 Cyborks, one of the most underestimated units in 3rd edition. (orks with +1 strength and toughness with 5++)
These models were front and center in the display case at the Games Workshop where I worked. Looking at them now I see they aged... acceptably enough? My mind spiraled: At the very least I need to re-glue the broken limbs. While I'm at it, I figured I might as well re-paint the red to blue, to put them in line with the rest of my army fluff-wise. But what do I count cyborks as anyway? Throwing a mob of 10 slugga boys into a trukk feels like a waste of a trukk. Either way, size creep has rendered them looking quite weedy. I should add spacers between the shoulders and torsos. Nobs? I could count them as nobs. I'd put nobs in a trukk. But I'll have to give them more height and shoulder pads. Still not enough... extra mechanical bits to justify the statline? If I'm doing this much would should I strip the paint? Whatever, don't sweat it, just start hacking...
Here's what I ended up with.

Cool kitbashes! Did you insert their original bases in to their new larger ones? And is that a wheel you used for the Plastic multi-barrelled gun on the last cybork?

I clipped the vertical part of the bases off and glued the flat circle part knyo 32mm bases as a way to sneak in more height.
Yes, it is a wheel, but it's supposed to be an ammo drum.

Neat way to add more height, and part ready bases too!
My bad, I thought it was a cooling jacket around the barrels, but ammo drum is a funky idea too!
Keep da boyz coming!
