Really cool and chaotic game. Love to see space marines used like one would expect, drop podding directly into the enemy strong point.

Thank you.

The dynamics of space marines vs. regular humans get really interesting in this kind of game, I've found. The marines can usually break apart whatever individual target they wish to hit whenever they want to do so and with their speeders and sturdy space ships can risk agressive recon unlike most other forces, take a breather and quickly reposition for another push with their Thunderhawks, but they can also manage to squander their expensive forces in hopeless, unsupported piecemeal attacks against many times larger formations like unattrited guard companies (that are often also dug in some sort of fortifications). It's particularly cool to see the organic development of co-ordinated manoeuvres in multiplayer games as marine shock troops smash in, force a breach and hold it open until larger IG formations come to hold the behind them and so forth.

Cheers as well, Easy E

This is great stuff! Well laid out as well!

You shouldn't be worried about the one bullet with your name on it, Boldric. You should be worried about the ones labelled "to whom it may concern"-from Blackadder goes Forth!

Glad you liked it

The form keeps evolving, hopefully towards a more readable piece even though the number of things going on keeps increasing as well. Do tell if there are some aspects you'd like to read more about in the future.

Very cool stuff. Have you considered writing some practical guide how you do this?

Cheers dyndraig.

I haven't really considered doing that in particular, given that the principles do not meaningfully diverge from the fundaments of various blinded wargames developed during the two hundred years or so we've had after Reisswitz's Kriegsspiel applied to any system one feels suits the purpose. This project is pretty well set for now, though I do of course tweak my approach on every iteration. I guess it could be interesting to write the process out for any curious cats out there as a readily reproducible version. We'll see.

Long time no report, time to rectify that!

The campaign has ground on at full steam, having rolled on for three further battles and many recon missions on the RPG side. I am also in the slow process of writing a practical guidebook for those interested in organising something similiar.

But! Today we're here with our largest report yet, pushing 80+ pages in glorious PDF form that you can find for your perusal here: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/gr3pvsrwv20hunql9hgkx/AAR-Taranus-Aegis.pdf?rlkey=b34y9dpu08qb9bet4yhueevb6&dl=0

Six players, two months of play, scheming, intrigue and very 40k madness up the wazoo with lots of burning tanks littering the fields as thousands of soldiers and civilians stomp the tortured grounds of Taranus Aegis.
The report contains some crude language, parody of current events and depictions of atrocities one would expect from the grim darkness of the far future. The document is intended to be read as two page spreads.

London

I am now wondering if the guys at the club would like to do a map game or if their desire to roll dice makes it impossible...

Would be having to improvise a lot of the mobility aspects to enable one side to operate better, possibly using ref adjudicated reinforcements...

It's a fun change of pace, definitely. Defining uncommon objectives to reflect mobility advantage could also work nicely.

I suppose if an eighty-page PDF campaign report isn't enough to get me to make an account and share my appreciation, than what is? Thank you so much for sharing these, they're an absolute blast and my favorite flavor of Warhammer. Feels like I'm reading an old-school campaign, but far more involved. I'd absolutely love to get a look at that guidebook whem it's finished, or even just more insights from having organized this.

I'm pulling for the Serenites! They can do it, despite the way the Imperium's doing what the Imperium does best to bleed them dry. What system are you using for the RPG side of things, Only War?

Humble thanks, glad you like my ramblings Ozymandian

The campaign is pretty old school, yeah. Every player gets to participate as much as they want to engage with it, so there is certainly plenty of depth to chat about outside the main clashes as well when folks decide to plunge into that rabbit hole with me. The RPG side is a continuation of my decade-long homebrew OSR project, so fantasy-fokken-Vietnam in space with a crunch-light but very flexible rules framework (3d6 stats + explosive d20 vs. target numbers between [20, 30] with sliding degrees of success). It's also an open table at a club, so there's a core of involved veteran players and a changing cast of folks just dropping by without a deep investment in the campaign. You can read a more elaborate explanation of the wargaming philosophy paradigm in Eero's Muster: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/413382/Muster. I've never jived well with the Fantasy Flight 40k games for many reasons, especially Only War where the ratio of pre-game effort to real risk is utterly lopsided in an unhygienic way (which is a bit of a jargony way to say that I don't consider it an honest and useful tool set for my own nihilistic needs) and the general free kriegsspiel and OSR sandboxing principles suit the campaign much better. Life is hell in the 11th Jaeger Regiment's 1st Recon Co's 2nd Platoon, where making new characters takes mere minutes and the casualty lists keep growing while the few surviving veterans keep getting grizzlier by the day

You can see the character sheet and our current recon frontline region map attached.

Also thank you for your support for the poor bastards of Selen II, they need all the help they can get despite having achieved some defensive advantages in the 8th and 9th games as the fluid frontlines snake around the wilderness in preparation for the next big push!
