Played Empire up through 3ed to 5th. Still play it on occasion, though honestly we are moving away from the flow charts to a bit of a quicker rule set of our own devising that is so much quicker. Many decades of great games of Empire though.

A ton of armies and a terrain habit...

Soooo many rulesets for Naps. I've played at least 50 from the market and five or six serious DIY rulesets. Barely got my toe in the pond. Love the period though.

I also like La Salle, but like Blucher better as the scale is more my speed. I want to try ESR next, but fully admit that this period scales the heck out of me!

LaSalle by Sam Mustafa.

The black rage is within us all. Lies offer no shield against the inevitable. You speak of donning the black of duty for the red of brotherhood; but it is the black of rage you shall wear when the darkness comes for you.

Still waiting on my copy of Blücher (OOP). Haven't bought LaSalle yet. What do y'all like about LaSalle? Is it army level or brigade or...?

Volley and bayonet? Scale? What do you like about it?

LaSalle is a tactical level ruleset, with your whole force on the table being roughly "division" size. Maneuver units represent roughly battalion size units (4 or 6 bases per unit for infantry and cavalry), but could also represent multiple under strength battalions. I like the tactical level, in which you've go multiple different unit types and can form units into multiple different formations and things like that. It's got what I consider to be a satisfactory level of detail while also being flexible and simple enough to take days to play a single game.

I'm a big fan of Sam Mustafa's stuff in general. I like Blücher, Maurice, and Might and Reason too, and plan to give Longstreet a try if I ever get around to starting an American Civil War miniatures project.

Each 3" square base is a brigade or equivalent, so you can refight the entire battle. A turn represents 1 hour. 1" on the table is equal to 100 yds. I like that the movement distances are much greater than infantry shooting ranges. That puts the right emphasis on manuever and positioning for me.
