So I've got some CSM up to a decent standard shown below:

Problem is that I'm not sure how to base them. My gut instinct is to go with the Martian Soil options in the Citadel app purely for contrast but at the same time feel the orange would be a but strong.

So any advice on how to base these guys?

When the rich rage war it's the poor who die

I always try for a theme that will contrast with the model.

Blue models would call for some kind of orange. Shouldn't be intense, you want to keep the focus on the model.

So Martian Soil might work.

use the martian ironearth. If you want to dial it back a bit, put a darker wash over it. agrax earthshade, or a burnt umber oil wash.

If in doubt, the basing scheme GW uses is good for the majority of models.

The dollar tree stores have a hobby and craft section that had a large number of bags of find black sand for the usual price of a dollar. The bad would easily handle a couple hundred bases.

I've seen some minis use black sand/ground bases, usually chaos forces to represent the utter destruction and devastation they cause.
