Hi people. So I decided that after finishing my SW I'd do something a little more original paint wise and decided to start a successor chapter. Since I am pretty much a fan of all of them, I thought it would be fun to ask people around which one they thought would be the most interesting to see fully painted. Please feel free to vote, comment and even suggest a chapter I might have forgotten to list.

Thanks to all the people who will vote.

The crowd seems in favour of dual patern colour schemes ! If this keeps up, I'll be having a true painting challenge pn my hands !

The howling griffons have a steady avance !

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I see other chapters are gaining favour. The Howling Gryphons are still first thought.

Tell me people, besides the colour scheme of the chapters, what motivate your vote ?

I voted "other," my primary motivation being seeing someone actually paint what I never got around to, but thought looked great.

I actually had to dig out my old SM Codex (5th ed.) to see what they had shown. They had Eagle Warriors, although I was more enamored with the Angels Porphyr. Same scheme (vertical split of blue and white, accent of a single knee pad, trim and coloring all codex, ostensibly being an UM successor, since they were nearly identical to the Eagle Warriors) and only slightly different insignia (the same stylized wing, with the AP having it come out of a skull, in profile). I preferred the Angels Porphyr, of the two, simply because there was (slightly) less information and I could farm what I knew of Byzantine history for character names, terrain ideas, conversion possibilities (pteruges, and the like) etc. They both have entries on Lexicanum, although with limited information. It was just enough to provide a framework, without restricting creative options, overmuch. Literally only one named character - a Dreadnought. Did make the test models trickier though, as the old AoBR decal sheet had the EW's wing, but I had to freehand the skull.

Aesthetically, I think vertical splits work far better than quartered schemes. On a smooth shield/crest or large tabbard, it's a different story, but I find that the quartered armor, with all the segments and differently colored details, is too busy and the scheme becomes disjointed and overly busy. The vertical split is more than enough to provide a painting challenge and visual interest, without losing that clean visual impact. You're seeing a Space Marine, top to bottom... just a different one on each side. Waist rotation adds extra dynamism, again without looking nearly as disjointed as a quartered scheme in the same position.

No idea if your priorities or you aesthetic values align with mine, at all, but that's my $0.04. Just two cents, really, but as two canon chapters look nearly identical, I figured I could double it.

As I see it, the howling gryphons are losing the popular vote, but are still up ahead !

Incredible ! The Novamarines just got a sudden surge ! But so did the howling Gryphons ! They are still up ahead. With 7 days left, can another chapter beat them ?

It seems we have reached a stalemate. With only 4 days till the end, will someone dethrone the Howling Gryphons ?

I don't think you should go with the top vote, you should decide yourself out of the top three or something.

Yeah, I could. But it's more for the fun of it than anything else. That and the challenge.

Hey! Hey! No takesy-backsies! We're running a scientific experiment to see how much red 'n' yellow quartering a person can paint before going mad, here.

I'm sooo, sooo sorry.

I voted for all three of the top three, so I'd be happy with any of them, but I think you should probably go for the top one in a public poll. Not only have the Griffons got a great paint scheme, their name is also pretty awesome! Then again, so do the Novamarines... And the Fire Hawks...

Yeah, any kind of quartered scheme would be cool (and honestly not as hard as it sounds - spray the base colour, paint the rest over top). Time consuming, yes. Difficult? Not as much as you'd think.

Fred Reed's Howling Griffons (pictured above) were even featured in a 40K battle report in 2nd edition. I'll have to go read it.

Howling Griffons are fun to paint, and there really aren't many armour panels that require both colours. The helmet is the only one that is really visible, with the chest and groin often covered by a weapon, and the back by the power pack. I was really enjoying painting mine, but sadly they have been moved to the subs bench until my interest in 40k resumes.

Spoilsport.

Seriously tho, I'm assuming spray yellow and paint red over that?

So this is the last day to vote ! The Howling Griffons have been leading since day 1 and it seems like they'll be winning this with a landslide !
I up the stakes ! Not only will I make the Sm chapter, but I will also paint an Imperial knight with the colour scheme of the winning chapter !
