Hey everyone,
Just like the title of the the post says: is this a good time to start a new Necron Army?

A bit of background: I've been an on-again/off-again player for years, but have always stuck to playing imperium stuff (almost always some flavor of space marine actually.) I recently got it into my head that it would be neat to make a xenos army, and I really like the look-feel-style-lore of the Necrons (well...I'm actually not a fan of the Necron vehicle style, but the infantry is awesome looking!) The only problem is that just in checking out their stats and reading up on their performance online they seem a bit... well, SUPER lackluster. I know that right now the space-marines have kinda upped the game on everyone, and I'm not looking to be at that level of competitiveness but does a new Necron player even stand a chance in today's 40k environment?

Adding to that we have the new Silent King stuff! It could be that we are about to get a whole new bunch of awesome Necron stuff right now that will revitalize the army in a big way!

What's your thoughts?

Depends on what you feel your goal is for the army. Necrons are not a top tier army in tournament scene by any measure. This doesn't mean that you or othdrs aren't playing it competitively, but that you might have hard time some times.

From sound of it, it seems you might not be looking for the most competitive army so that might not be an issue.

I usually try not to look at what is the most competitive as that changes over time, but rather what I am interested in. For me the latest force was DG because I wanted to try out contrasts. I started small (DI models) and suddenly I have 2000 points.

When starting a new force, I try to commit to some small goal post and do a check if I want to continue. That way I don't over commit to an army that I don't want to paint or play.

My recommendation to you is to start small. Maybe start collecting box or something similar. Set painting it as your first goal post. Watch some gameplay with Necrons and come up with your small points list. Maybe 500-1000p. Try to reach that and play with them. That could be your second goal post. Then if you are still interested, you can continue and create next goal post.

I'd say wait until we fully realize what's in store for Necrons May 23rd

Well, presumably you know the specific environment you'd be paying in. So you tell us. What's your local shop/group/club look like these days. Do you envision Necrons working there?

On moon miranda.

Honestly, the biggest thing preventing me from starting Necrons (NuCron fluff aside) has been the kits. They're gorgeous, but they're so complex in terms of geometry, particularly the vehicles, that the idea of painting them, at least in the manner that I'd like (or even just trying to reach certain areas with a brush once assembled), kills the urge quite quickly for me

That said, if you're ok with them not being super competitive and don't mind the painting aspect, go for it if you're into them. They're awesome looking and probably have a bunch new gubbins right around the corner.

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.

New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

If you run the standard list you have a chance of winning a game, without it you have none.
(3 Doom Scythes, 3 Doomsday Arks, 2 10 man Immortal units)
Goonhammer has a great rundown of the faction as it currently stands.

Note, Grey Knights were in the similar situation, and now look at them. Point is things are about to drastically change, not just the new book, but the return of the king ...

We'll most likely get a new unit or two leading up to the launch of 9th some time next year, but you can't go wrong with the units i listed above. Use that as your template and build up the rest of your list based on your tastes (leaves you ~500 points).

If you waited this long to pull the trigger wait a week and then decide. On the 23rd we get a preview of whats coming in the next campaign book.

In competitive meta, yes using DDA is the way to go. But this again boils down to the meta OP plays in. Do correct me, but isn't it rather rare that a faction can be played in multiple ways in truly competitive lists. Most of them include a bunch of units that are the most cost-efficient or powerful and have a build centered around that

But it might be good to wait for the next reveals as multiple posters said. You get more information on what Necrons might be getting (fingers crossed on new Flayed Ones).

Against almost any other faction your going to need the heavy hitters in a competitive game.

Most factions revolve around one of three styles: board control, ranged, and melee. However you have factions that can play very different just based on the color you paint them (SMs) and can excel at any of these roles.

Agreed, my ghost ark is a real pain in the arse trying to reach the inside of the pilot's cockpit. Hopefully not being a great painter I went for a very simple colour scheme to ease that but still, od is it annoying!

At the very least we know they're getting one sweet new model, plus that news of Szarekh returning (if he gets a model that would be insane!) do mean this is prob a pretty exciting time to get into Necrons.

I'd wait until we see what is coming for Necrons. As for how good they are, as mentioned competitively you have one route to have some chance of winning. Casual games I find that Necrons struggle even more. They don't translate rule of cool to the table well. So other casual armies could run all over you because their suboptimal units are better than your optimal units.

I have 7k pts worth of necrons and its all garbage right now so I have fingers crossed I can start playing them again when Pariah comes out.
