I would love to know the inside story of what's happened with this app. It must have been desperately behind - the lack of the iOS version suggests it was probably only put into review last night, and wasn't finished before then.
That would at least begin to explain why quite a lot of it seems to have been half built because they ran out of time. It's like a student project - the first third is quite nice, but the last third was put together in an overnight crunch to get something out there and it's crap, and the dev knows it's crap, but they had to hand something in.
I wonder if it was farmed out to a development agency who just strung them along and completely dropped the ball at delivery time? All the problems people are having entering payment information on Twitter suggests that it didn't get any testing before release either.
I don't think I'm over-egging it to say this is the worst app I've seen a FTSE 250 company put out in years.

I subscribed to give it a test. Kinda disappointed. It is cool to have access to all 8th edition books, but having no proper search by type function or "look by type" is very annoying. I go into the War of the Spider stratagem lists because I play Death Guard and I have to sift through all the other factions just to see my stratagems.
I'd personally say that the app is about 20-25% done and not worth the price of admission. I am hoping that they will open it further after tomorrow's release and/or a rapid release cycle, but currently it is a very subpar app where I am paying to see stuff I own without any sort of sorting.
I mean, I go into the Codex: Iron Hands Supplement and it only has Ferros, but it should by all use cases list all "usable" units of Iron Hands instead of just limiting itself to the book itself.
TL;DR: The app needs a lot of work. It almost feels like they started work on it a month or two ago and they had one person working on it.

The PDF thing must be temporary, right?
Random thing I found - I searched for the Fire and Fade strat (note to Devs: search results need Codex labels) and the Drukhari one has the Errata RAI change (no AIRCRAFT) but not the RAW change (which restricts it to ASURYANI). As the Errata doc hasn't been updated we now have one source for the correct rule which is, unfortunately, paywalled.

The "usable" units have <Chapter>, not "Iron Hands" though.
I get your argument(it's one I've made myself with regards to the Combat Roster bit they have on the Community page), but it's a bit more intuitive than you might think when doing lists.

That is true. For me an app that I pay a premium for should be very accessible and increase the quality of life for my game. The 40k app is currently not doing that.
I would even say that the Age of Sigmar app is superior, even in its free mode.

I'd like for it to give all the rules for a faction in one place, rather than be organised by book. It seems unnecessary. Let me click on Thousand sons, say, and have all the codex and ritual of the damned rules there in one place.

This is such a weird app. If I do search on "Death Guard" I get all the stratagems listed and nothing else. Even then I can only see stratagem names and nothing else so I have to enter each and everyone to see what it is about.
This app is so raw that it hasn't even entered an alpha stage.

Why? Its cheap, easy and fulfills design requirements. The warning signs on this thing have been there ever since they announced it and announced that the actual feature people might pay for won't be present.
The rest of the paywall stuff is just paying a monthly fee to have 'access' to books you already paid for.

To be fair for the paywall, it's access to everything right now and once you purchase the new 9th edition dexes those are not locked behind a paywall.
It could be a bit better organized, and it's missing the listbuilder but the app is by no means bad at all right now.

That's not confirmed. The wording heavily suggests the opposite.
You also don't seem to get Vigilis currently.

From what people are saying in this thread, but it sounds actively terrible.
From what you just said- if it isn't well organized, its utterly failing at the one possible use it could have without the listbuilder. From the posts from Eldarsif, Leggy and Phazer, its clearly missing out on the very basics.

They made a big hooplah about how the physical codices are coming with a download code for the app and then made it clear that if you bought the books then you don't need to be a subscriber to access that content...so I'd say it's fairly confirmed?

They said it unlocks your codex in the app, not that it updates without a subscription iirc.

Honestly the app looks like some off the shelf solution that they implemented and then entered in book data.
It's just not worth the money they are asking for it currently.

The app requires to sign-in through an HTML page everytime you load up. Firing it up on the tablet I have for referencing rules, I just get the Chrome dinosaur page when I try to access it with wifi off.
The Chrome dinosaur game does work from within the 40K app though.

People can also be overly negative here as well. I'd say give it a shot and if you don't like it unsubscribe.
My main gripe about the orginization is the PA books, but it's really easy to quick refrence relics, stratagems, rules and datasheets. Much quicker than looking them up in a PDF or some other way.

hah, I cant get past the "Start Here" because (I assume - ASS U ME) that my scaled text means the button to click on is off the bottom of the screen. And ... they have no scroll mechanism.

Nearly all of those reviews are complaining that you have to pay for features. Most of them are not even about the functionality, just that it's locked behind a paywall or that the list builder isn't available yet.

Starting to sound like the epubs in my iPad are still a better option. I hope GW intends to keep on releasing them, I'm not sure I want to switch to using this app (I'm on iPadOS 14 beta 3 so not a lot of confidence it'll even work properly when it drops LOL)

Yeah, great that they are making an app for 40K, but I'm not going to beta test it for them. I'll be waiting a few weeks (or months) until they fixed the worst issues.
(I've done my fair share of app development, and to me it sounds like they've released it according to a management/marketing deadline, not when it's actually fit for public use. Been there, done that, it's a lose-lose situation for everyone except the manager who has the "shipped the app on time" key result checkbox on his yearly salary review)
