Hey everyone,

So a very good friend of mine just confessed to me that he doesn't really know the 40k lore almost AT ALL! We were going to be playing a tabletop roleplaying game in the 40k universe (I think it's the Inquisitor one? I haven't read the rules yet) and so he asked me what would be the best way to "catch up" on the most important lore and history of the universe. My idea was to read the lore section of the 8th edition rulebook, but I think that he may enjoy something more accessible like a novel or two (plus: he IS trying to read more books again.)

Any thoughts on how to educate a total 40k noob?

Seriously. though, the rulebook is better for an overview. Most novels will be pretty limited in scope and not bother to explain a lot of things.

The Eisenhorn trilogy by Dan Abnett is quite a good introduction to the 40k universe IMHO.

ESPECIALLY if you're looking to give someone sufficant information for dark heresy

The Big Rule book (any edition) is best for this. It's purpose made to introduce the setting, the key lore points and is chock full of great art too. Thrust the 9th edition one under his nose once its out or thrust the 8th right now.
