20,000 tonnes of diesel from a power plant. Took two days for the news to reach Moscow, apparently, which is adding to the fun.
Various organizations are predicting a difficult cleanup, though some effort is having to be put into shouting down the ones who just want to burn it off.

This is a big deal in russia since russia is basically no longer a superpower, not even a real nation anymore. It's an oil and gas company ran by a criminal syndicate, basically.

Fun fact: Russia is the largest country on earth, covering 11 time zones. The total russian economy/GDP is barely larger than New York city's economy and just a bit smaller than new york state's total economy.

They're still a nation, but yes, maybe 15-20 years ago they began to re-build the Soviet Union...just without tanks and infantry. They realized that they can export various gas and fuel products which Europe is always short on - and basically they can economically control/influence their previous satellite nations in a similar fashion. Many of the old Soviet Union countries are now dependent on Russia for fuel/energy, etc.

However, this fuel/energy bubble collapsed relatively recently and their sudden spike in profits disappeared, and they're taking a serious hit on the ole income.

Watching Russia's resurgence and subsequent leveling off has been one of my hobby interests (though mostly paying attention to their military restructuring, etc.).

Another fun fact - Canada is second largest country. The total canadian economy/GDP is barely larger than New York city's economy and just a bit smaller than new york state's total economy
Another funnier part - Russia is 11th bigest economy on earth.
Another superfunnier part - Guandong province (China) makes the same amount GDP as 25 (so half) States in US combined.

So what's your actual point?

This spill is a tiny speck compared to a forest fires in Siberia last summer.
But, so you know - Deepwater Horizon spill covered about 180,000 km2 - Norilsk spill covered about 180.000 m2 which is about thousand times less than Deepwater Horizon.

Well, as to why I'm trolling on russia and not canada, it's pretty obvious.

Canada isn't undermining western democracies with campaigns of internet trolling and false meme campaigns means to incite hate and division to put fascist leaders ion power in western nations, Russia is.

Canada doesn't murder people on foreign countries soil with dangerous chemical and radiological weapons. Russia does.

Has there been any news on plans for the cleanup? I heard there was a proposition to dilute it, and pushback against burning it.

Some really vague references to cleaning and pumping, but the big bit in this article is the cause of the spill. Apparently melting permafrost (due to global warming) softened to the point that the tank's supports collapse and it fell over.
So environmental disaster into environmental disaster.

It's already contained and localized



Now it's time to collect all stained water and dirt - it's something about 21.000 tons of diesel.
It's estimated around 6.000 tons in waters and the rest is on the ground.
700 tons of stained waters already been collected.
Water part is actually easier to clean but the ground part quite hard because it's basically arctic tundra with no roads. But work is in progress.

Burning part was declined from the start because it menas that all polluted area became arctic desert due to low levels of nature activity. So it's actually easier to collect all this polluted ground, because it's not so vast area (for a company like Nornickel) and it's a start of summer.
