Thanks to a mix of boredom and annoyance I've been working on a New Recruit dataset for 4th edition.
https://github.com/Kothra/Warhammer-40-000-4th-Edition-for-NewRecruit
I'm still working on the core codexes, and plan to have all of the main published codexes (even if I don't like the later ones). I don't plan to extend this to 5th edition. For purely 3rd edition armies a 3rd edition builder already exists but long term I may redo them for this version for full compatibility.

Thanks.
I'm very pleased with the results and the company did a very good job. The cards are crisp and clear and have the same coating you find on a deck of playing cards you buy in the store. They did email me a couple of times before production began to confirm or correct things they saw that might either cause an issue or not be what I expected, so communication was excellent ad quality is top-notch as well.
I think I might see what else they can print for me (wargear cards, psychic powers, tokens, etc.) just because the quality will hold up a lot better than anything I'd do at home. And they look real nice.
If GW released a reprint of 2nd ed, like for an anniversary special or something, I would definitely pull the trigger and buy one.

Had a great game of 2nd this evening, with some superb shenanigans with strategy cards. My team mate jump packed his vet Sgt into fight Ahriman who quickly head-bonked him to death with his magical staff, but the vet Sgt was hiding a vortex grenade and the ‘last gasp’ card in his utility belt, and cooked off the Vortex grenade at Ahriman’s feet. Much laughter was had before our foe played his own trick card, ‘saved’, nudging Ahriman out of the way of the template by a whisker… another Tzeentch sorcerer promptly Assailed Ahriman out of the way of the template lest it scatter onto him next turn!

I'm having trouble finding the answer to this.
Swooping hawks have "Swooping Hawk Grenade Packs" in the 3e eldar codex, but there's no rules for the grenade packs in the codex, not that I can find.
Was there a FAQ or update that gave them rules or just removed them from the squad?

I've checked the Chapter Approved 2001, 2003, 2004 compilations and all of the white dwarf magazines from the time (at least when I was going through them nothing stood out as something I needed for updating the battle bible)

Very odd.
Did they do multiple printings? I would assume mine was an early one, as I was grabbing all the 3rd ed codexes as they dropped. But not necessarily reprints.

I exclusively play 5th edition. I have a lot of the codices and two versions of someone's homebrewed codex for Leagues of Votaan. Does anyone else have a link to resources to help flesh out a good 5th edition game?
I collect Space Marines, Space Wolves, Orks, Tau, Imperial Guard, Eldar, and Tyranids.
After nearly thirty years of collecting; I have a lot of figures. I also have built in opponents (my kids) and I have enough armies and books that guests can fall in on a game and I can provide the troops.

Depends on what your looking for, i have copies of all the imperial armor books they are all cross compatible with 5th if you want me to send you PDFs.
It fleshes out options for units and factions. i also recommend the stronghold assault and escalation books to give the game more optional depth.
In other news this was last weekends house 5th ed games for our group-

Once again, this appears to be the most appropriate thread to post this. But if not, let me know. If you're having trouble stripping old Warhammer models that used rattle can primer in the '90s and '80s, here's my advice. Soak it in isopropyl alcohol for at least 1 hour and give it a good enough brushing. At this point, you're just trying to loosen up the paint for the next step. Assuming the last step didn't get the paint off all that great, but instead just allowed some small rips and areas in it, next soak it in LA is totally awesome ( a strong concentrated Degreaser you can buy at Dollar Tree in the US) for 24 to 48 hours+
if you have access to one of those Sonic or ultrasonic glasses cleaners or jewelry cleaners that cost around $30 on Amazon, you can also put la's totally awesome in it for the second step instead, running it for 20ish minutes, letting it rest a tiny bit, giving it a good scrub and then running it inside of the machine again until you have been able to remove 90% of the paint.
The third step is to use wooden toothpicks to pick out all of the paint that you were unable to get out with the brush, with vigorous scrubbing, usually all the things stuck in corners. This method is what I found has worked best for me, and stripping my '90s models that used old rattle can primer from back then, which alcohol alone wasn't able to completely remove. The nice thing with LA's is totally awesome is that you can leave your miniatures submerged in it for months and it won't damage them, whether they're metal plastic or resin, although for resin I would still err on the site of caution however, sweet as there is a chance it could still bloat and or warp Parts if submerged for very very long extended periods of time (48hr+)
If alcohol immediately removes the paint for you, congrats! If you don't have models that date before 2010 that are painted, then you probably can just get away with it, only using La's totally awesome. It just happens that these old models ( the ones that have turned 30 years old this year) were primed with primer that was very, very strong, and most primers today don't match that, as formulas have changed to become safer and cheaper/more sustainable.

Do you have the errata files for the old Imperial Armour books?
Those and the mid 5e update FAQs brought a number of older books up a step - Sisters, Daemonhunters, Templars, and Dark Angels all gained things like 5e priced rhinos and 5e stormshields while the tau and eldar gained updated rules for expanded options like the Tetra and Warp Hunter.

I appreciate the amount of effort he put into it, but our group decided not to create our own rules but rather using existing rules from other editions within the framework of 5th IE using the wound allocation rules from 4th instead of 5th that were prone to abuse. in his attempt to integrate a bunch of the 7th edition mechanics i think he makes it a but to "busy" for our groups experience of just using 5th with a few inter-edition rules swaps.

Price-wise, if you have a lot of stuff you need to strip, this is better, though, and for anything not painted 30-plus years ago, it's a lot faster and doesn't take more than a day usually. The big thing is that it's only $1.25 for a whole thing of it vs. $8-$15 for a very small thing of it ( which I probably would have bought, but I am very, very broke in terms of hobby budget)

That Paint Stripper bottle lasts quite nicely tho, since you dont douse your models in it. You just use it like paint, brush it on where you need paint removed, wait a bit, then take a paper towel a suck the paint off.
But sure enough, if ya need to strip an entire armys worth of models, might not be ideal

Silly game tonight, took us a while to finally get this game in but we put my admech up against noise marines.
We had 3 objectives and i even broke out the warhound titan, now using the old rules for it circa 3rd edition where it was designed for use in normal games. it is a huge 810 point sink it managed to kill 2 things all game-a land raider and a single obliterator..... the said obliterators it was running away from most of the game. i managed to keep one of the two void shields up most of the game. it was a good big shiny distraction though.
When i blew up the land raider we replaced it with a "special" crater to denote the wreckage in the most slaneesh way possible.
MVP for his team was definately the helldrake,
I ended up loosing my tech priest dominus and a squad of cataphron breachers. but i managed to take all the objectives for a win.

This has been and interesting thread to read. IMO there are four main factors why Games Workshop has a rollercoaster release schedule for old games workshop players or Warhammer fans like me.
1. Profit - The company is publically going through a major upheaval, it started as a small company and now with international fame. Making money to sustain itself economically for the fans and for the share holders is tricky.
2. Rules design is harder than it was when they were young games developers at Nottingham. Now they are making more "balanced" rules but they are losing their heart and soul. They are at a crossroads.
3. People want money from their investments in their models yet want newer and better things for all the reasons that people want an evolving story or a beautiful world in their mind or imagination when playing their wargames.
4. Cybercrime and international pouching of staff must be a serious problem for their intellectual property and legacy as a company. This is a major issue for every big company on earth right now.
I used to play when I was small and could not afford anything with some basic warhammer models, I could only get a chaos space marine and I could just about during Dune 2 the computer game get a boar boy set and an Advanced Hero Quest set. My cousin got Heroquest and I loved the idea of things like Man O War and could not afford it. I had many presents at holiday times and on my birthday from my now dead parents and I remember reading some of the most fun background.
Years later I still liked Warhammer and years later they made Warhammer Quest. I read White Dwarf magazine and I still do sometimes. White Dwarf magazine is full of fun and weird articles as it has always been. The soul of this company has gone through quiet a massive change. If not it's soul, it's value and real sociological impact on the youth of the world in the age of the new internet and in the age of the new phone has been remarkable.
People around the world wanted phones and the internet and still do. Someone people want the box set, some people want the best paints (and I think the new washes and the new paints are absolutely great), some people want new books (the Horus Heresy series is an award winning series and great legacy to the older games designers, it sets at the whole human version of the warhammer world, absolutely outstanding achievement), some people like the people posting here are sick of new rules and developments. Do not forget it takes an army like the grot army, or the entire armies stuck in Trazyn the Infinite's labyrinth to make a company like this world now with Dawn Of War and all the other games like Total War Warhammer (which pretty fun too!).
So that is my opinion.
What I was wondering is how Kill Team and Hive War type games like Necromunda are going to work out. I do not mind buying the lastest thing if I can get an entire army like Blood Bowl!
Personally I would like to see the Hrud or the Sslith, a minor species get a rework. What do you think of getting a gang style warfare thing like Gorkamorka working? I love the law and the background, I have my paints but I do not have the time to play a huge game or the shelf space for a big army with all the releases! I realise I can not have it all the the hype is palpable for the Horus Heresy small scale game and what they could do with the final battle for the Emperor in small scale now! Right?
Well simply put I like the Xenos factions the most, I see the Emperor as a bad father who made a mistake, or a lot of mistakes. He went to the stars after inventing psychic potential or psychic forces for himself and a weapon called the chainsword and fairly the bolt gun. (I like the bounty hunters or necromunda by the way that have this stuff!). The Emperor did not care to think that going to space with huge genetically evolved muscled and armoured superhumans would scare or irritate the other species in space! Including I suppose the Daemons that bothered him personally.
Aliens or Xenos would respect the guardsman for they were normal looking humans but Horus wanted the guardsmen as slaves and was prepared to do anything to persuade the people the Emperor was a fool and was not worth serving or respecting. He was a heretic. And he invoke daemons.
The Inquisition steps in in the current 40k lore and with the three factions in the brilliant book by Gav Thorpe called Inquisitor, it is shown that there is (and in Eisenhorn! great read) there are Ordos Malleus, Ordos Hereticus and Ordos Xenos. Why do I think that is still the best concept for dealing with humanities issues really in the far far future where there is only war, I don't know but I would like to see Inquisitor scale (rather than the larger scale models of the Inquisitor game) conflicts that are raging within the warzones of the forty first millenium.
To me the aliens or xenos are not evil and are innocent until proven guilty, and once again had a bad first encounter with the space marines and the Emperor. First impressions count I learnt at work!
In the end I see the dark eldar as a sort of body transference skip or cheat through life an eternity species that uses cloning and body transference to keep living and perhaps co ops species like the Hrud or the Sslith and transfers them with their soul stealing or harvesting into new forms or shells secretly. Using this sort of secret magic makes the other species believe they are very evil but maybe they just have lost their faith in all the Eldar/Aeldari Gods. Since the birth of Slaanesh and the fall of the Eldar generally.
The homonculus covens could probably work at medicine and soul transference into a new shell. The wyches would help them reproduce and fight and even die as like the space marines or the elite of the guardsmen while the kabalites would save them both or even just the homuncoli for their selfish ends (usually). Deep space raiding is how they afford it all! And they are neutral largely like the rest of the Eldar/Aeldari.
I would love to see skirmish style battles like happen night and day all over earth happen with this kind of concept (or frankly interpretation) in mind!
What do you think? (By the way I would love to play a Kill Team type game, where they had a alien homuculus who could do biomancy, artisan things, space flight on a destroyer sized ship, and new the secrets of biotransference and yes could fight with something like a stinger pistol with toxins, from his knowledge of hundreds of thousands of years of medicine, custom character dream of mine)

I ran a badab war siege list against some noise marines this time out. he was using the 3.5 codex of course, it was a good fight he even managed to kill the land raider achillies. i managed to pull off a narrow win by getting a single scout onto the objective before the game ended.
For those not familiar with the siege scenario. there is a single objective in the defenders deployment zone they have to protect and the attacker looses the game if they do not capture the objective by the time the game ends.
We both had some silly fun as it should be when dice are involved.

I recall the 6e version of siege vanguard having the always tempting 'hunter squadron with intercept'. Just the chance of it showing up helped discourage flyers and it was a half decent anti-tank unit too - even against super-armoured units the achilles (and it's even bigger brother the achilles-alpha)

Almost done building my 5 man unit of deathwatch marines, I even managed to get my hands on some old metal deathwatch bolters and helmets and shoulder pads for some of them, mixed together with the newer conversion bits.
Planning on doing a 5 man unit of fallen angels to go with cypher next.
