This is basically just a poll out of curiosity as I was recently sitting on some guardsmen I painted and realized that I use quite a number of paints on each one of them, wondering if this is common.

So the question basically is: how many different paints do you use on a normal infantry model (not a centerpiece or unique hero)?
On these guys here from me:
Spoiler:

it was:

Well, for each color like red, I generally use three kinds of colors like base, layer and highlight in some way.
So it adds up...

Normally 3 shades of each color. Metals and boots don't get that treatment, so they each get one ish.

Maybe I should have voted for 11-15 but things like canteens and webbing and skin add up quickly.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

Depends entirely on the mini. On my DG, all minis from the loftiest DP to the lowliest Cultist all use the same palette of about 15ish paints (maybe more, that was a pure estimate), but others it will differ. My Khador for Warmachine use somewhat less than that for example.

Actually, let's break it down for the sake of curiosity.
DG- black undercoat (does that count?), warboss green, Iraqi sand, yellow green, chestnut ink, warplock bronze, runefang steel, royal purple, evil sunz scarlet, mournfang brown, yriel yellow, loren forest, smokey ink, nuln oil, Nurgle's rot and Tamiya clear red (plus balthasar gold and nikalikh oxide if they have bells on them and/or neutral grey and medium sea grey if they have exposed flesh). So anywhere between 16-20 paints used there. Not a bad guess.

Khador- black undercoat, rhinox hide, steel legion drab, chestnut ink, vallejo gold, mephiston red, evil sunz scarlet, leadbelcher, runefang steel, nuln oil and mournfang brown. If they have a face showing add in vallejo bronzed flesh, white and black and a flesh wash. If they have magical weapons (or are a Warcaster) add in the fang and teclis blue. So anywhere between 11-16 paints for them.

I counted the undercoat. It's a color after all. Good to hear that others use similar numbers. So I'm not totally crazy

With orks infantries, like 10-15 and I'm very basic in the paint scheme. Basically only different types of green, black, brown, metallic colors and some details in blue and white as they're based on Deathskullz. Eyes, tongue and teeth require an additional 3-4 colors even if they are tiny details.

I guess it depends upon what exactly I'm painting.

The most recent "army" I painted was AoS Goblins during June.
My standard goblin spearman/archer had:
green
DAK Sand (WWII tan color, when I ran out, something similar)
Snakebite
Deathclaw
red
Ironbreaker
black
Gore Grunta
retributor gold
Nuln Oil
Seriphim Sepia
Ushabti Bone
So 12 colors, not counting bases.

But I've painted Marines in far fewer. 5-6

That really depends.
I have some that are in essence 5 colours sans base.

And some that are , including mixtures of colours due to flame effect. More then 15.

Your average Inf also varies heavily, more uniform factions have that alot easier, compared to rag tag bands. Which makes R&H rabble i run alongside my regulars alot more paint intensive then let's say my CSM are.

GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"

16-17 for my old sisters scheme :
White
Red
Black
Green (watered down for scopes)
Bone
Two golds
Leadbelcher and mithril
Nuln oil, seraphim sepia, agrax, flesh tone
Balor brown
Old warlock purple (screamer pink isn't as vibrant)
And some ancient brown ink for leather
And a blue ink for power weapons

Plus the rare bit of orange and yellow for flames.

By mixing you can get alot done with black, white and 3-4 base colours. That reduced my need for a huge stack of paint pots. Hell I can even use them up before they go dry now. But I could see the appeal of consistent results by having like 3 reds etc.

Brutal, but kunning!

Of course. And I just realized that in my intro post I forgot Null Oil and Drakenhof Nightshade for the heat worn metal parts... so 38.

... And that I sometimes also use to mix layers to soften highlights. Like Base, 50/50 Base/layer 1, layer 1, 50/50 layer1/2, layer 2.
Sooo... maybe I'm a bit excessive.

Painting some Cadians at the moment.

Basecoat.
Red->Red wash->Red->Red.
Blue->Blue wash->Blue->Blue
Brown->Brown wash->Same Brown highlight.
Grey->Black Wash->Same Grey Highlight.
Skin->Wash->Skin.
Iron->Wash->Iron.

So 1+4+4+2+2+3+3 = 19.

Could add further highlights to the brown and grey - but I find you get more depth with multiple washes, and if you then highlight with a lighter colour it can be a bit jarring.

metalic silvery one is on most of the armour, the grips of weapons and the weapon blades and gun barrels. the gun casings are red as are the models visors. any cloth, books are painted in some skiny looking colour.

the rhinos are silver, with red visors, redish elements like stripes etc.

All models have decorative metal elements painted in some sort of dark gold or bronze looking colour.

so for vehicles it is 4 colours and for infantry it is 4 too. Only draigo and the Librarian have more colours used on them. Mostly because both don't have helments on and wear dark brown hoods, have different skin colour faces and black or blue eyes.

The objective markers are all yellow, green and red crates so 2 colours used for those.

Depends entirely on the model in question, how much effort I’m prepared to put in, and whether Contrast is suited to the texture.

Mortek Guard for Ossiarchs? Wraithbone, Skellington Horde, Shysh Purple, Basilicanum Grey, Akhelian Blue and Terradon Turquoise. Plus a technical paint for basing, and something for the base rim.

So...8, at a minimum

If I wanted I could drybrush a lighter bone colour, but 8 is the bare minimum to get them ready for action.

For larger models, that’ll go up to at least 10 for added bone colour variance.

Depends entirely on the army.

An average Genestealer Cultist? Maybe 10 paints total, including undercoat and basing. Same for a Goblin Stikka for AoS. Contrast goes a long way on the horde armies.

An 'average' Deathwatch marine, if there is such a thing? Easily 20+ paints needed, and that's assuming no visible flesh or anything special with the weapons.

Just did a quick add-up in my head, and for most stuff, generally about 10-15, not including the same 3–4 colours I use on my bases. Fewer for something that's almost entirely one/two colours, like Space Marines or Guardians, though.

On my current project, nu-Mephiston.

Base: 12 individual colors and/or shade paints.

Model: At least 25 to 30 different colors and/or shade paints.

So yea, lots. Lots and lots and lots.

Take it easy.

Normally, I end up in about 20 different pots before the model reaches a state that satisfies me. Sometimes less, but normally I just grab a pot from my rack... use it, then set it aside for easy access later and to do a color count out of curiosity. I'm one to joke with my friends "yeah, this only took like 5 colors", then go home to verify and sigh because my "simple color scheme" is still at least 15 different pots.

I’m guesstimating 16-20.

Are we counting primer?

But it’s basically 3 for each colour, plus wash and 2 on the base if it’s a regular non-scenic base.

So:
Primer
3x main colour
Main colour wash
3x flesh colour
Flesh colour wash
3x trim colour
2x metal
Metal wash
2x base
Black
2x parchment colours
2x gems
2x holsters/leather

So probably over 20 if the model has flesh showing, less if it doesn’t, but I usually don’t have flesh sowing if that’s an option on the model.

For mine:

Marines/Knights/IG
- white primer
- green (shade varies)
- gold
- white
- nuln oil/green shade
- lighter green highlight
- red/green/yellow/baby blue for screens, lights and consoles

Tyranids
- red primer
- dark blue (scales/hide)
- purple shade
- light blue highlight (scales/hide)
- flesh (claws)
- yellow shade (claws)
- white highlight (claws)

Necrons
- black primer
- gold accents
- fluorescent green shade/lining

Admech
- Red primer
- off-white cogs
- leadbelcher plates/bionics
- red shade (cloak & pants)
- nuln oil (all other parts)

Tau
-Metallic blue or Prussian blue
-Gold
-white
-blue shade/lining
-possibly light/baby blue highlighting
- baby blue or red lens wash (with silver undercoat)

Oddly, I can paint my tyranids the fastest. Imperial takes the longest because of the tricolor scheme and lining/details.
