We already know that Marines and Necrons will get updated 9th edition books, what what new or newish factions are likely to get books?

I remain shocked that Khorne/World Eaters have not been updated. The Khorne Bezerkers are now old enough to drive. So I'd put them at the head of the list with Emperors Children following to finish out the set.

Blackstone Fortress has seen some more non-Marine chaos cults, traitor guard and mutants so I'd put them as possible.

Similarly BSF has made me wonder if the long, long awaited Imperial Agents/Pirates/Mercenaries isn't possible. One-off units that can be used by several factions like a Zoat, Rogue Trader or Kroot.

Any other likely additions?

What would be pretty cool if they would (at a minimum standard) bring a codex for the, lets call them "index armies". So Death Korps, Elysians, Renegades and Heretecs, Corsairs... I am definitly forgetting some of them. Sure it would be cooler if some of those would get their very own codex, but a cumulative one would at least be better then the current situation.

One can dream I guess.

For what it's worth there is supposed to be an updated Forge World Index for 9th.

I know, but I assume there will be no fluff for those armies in there? I had the Impression that Forgeworld index would only be numbers and rules, or am I mistaken?

Yup, I'm quite relieved about that, the poor old marines really need something to help them against all those overpowered Xenos armies

Yeah, that was unfortunate future-proofing for a future that didn't end up happening.

I wonder what was the last 2nd ed 'dex that referenced the in-"development" Squat one - I might have to go and check my copy of the SOB book...

Tabletop Tactics mention in their playtester video that there is less likely to be codex creep and suggest they've all been written/playtested together with 9th rules before release. It's fair to assume every existing faction will get a new book for crusade content.

There were 2 unreleased cyber squats from around that time but I've never heard what their book may have contained beyond the obvious.

I'd be happy GW just ported the AoS Sky Dwarfs to 40k!

I'd like that. Give me time to try out my PA DG rules before you invalidate them with a new Codex

According to the refs on Lexicanum, that quote is from the IG codex ('95), but Squats are mentioned as allies choices in Eldar ('94), Space Wolves ('94), Ultramarines ('95) and Angels of Death ('96).
They are not mentioned in the SoB ('97) nor Assassins ('97) books.

I give squats better than 50% odds of getting a full army release in 9th.

I believe that they believe it if that helps? It's not impossible that it is the case but in all probability yes, whatever they have been seen so far will be altered by the time it reaches us.

Blackstone has made me wonder a little if an army of Tri-legged walkers could happen. The guardians of the Fortress are the most new xenos of all the races present and aren't in there as "token fan" aliens like the Zoat.

I could see GW splitting Tau into two halves and allowing the pure mecha half to push on its own and then have the restoration of their Xenos heavy line as a separate force. Likely with Kroot at their core, but then allowing a plethora of other Xenos races to slip in. Far as I can tell this was the original intention for Tau, for them to be a catch-all creative faction that allowed GW to add multiple different styles of Xenos perhaps as one or two units only for a diverse look at the aliens in the setting. The barrier was that the mecha-style models really took off in a big way and swamped the xenos end.

Well obviously we know about Codex: Marines 12.9 and codex: necrons. There's rumbling about the deathwatch, which worries me because GWs new vision of space marines (which is basically "hey guys remember Aspect Warriors? like that, but wearing power armor.") just does not jive with the original vision of deathwatch, which was specialized commando units with unique equipment.

I think past that, Daemons is the codex with the greatest structural need to change, and past that, Genestealer Cults, which have just gotten jackhammered into the ground and really just need a redesign into a coherent codex. Maybe this time we can have subfaction bonuses that actually apply to...anything? Daily reminder that GSC have THREE factors that disqualify a unit from benefitting: 1, all vehicles, 2, all guys using stolen Guard equipment, 3, all fething GENESTEALERS. IN CODEX: THE ONE WITH THEIR NAME ON IT.

If they release EC and WE codexes I expect w'ell also see Chaos Space Marines again. It is still so, so comical to me that they have no corresponding rule to doctrines+Superdoctrines AND their chapter tactics still don't work on vehicles. Just so unconcerned with basic fairness.

On a selfish note, it'd be cool if we got a harlequin model release. Maybe a named character harlequin who you can actually field in a harlequin army?

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

I wonder if GW will keep Chaos Demons as a single army or if they'll split them into demon specific armies like they've done in AoS. Whilst AoS isn't finished (Slaanesh for example still has ample room for more diversity); it works rather well. I could see GW copy-catting that idea into 40K.

My money is on Noise Marines by Christmas. Possibly even with Fulgrim and a new lucius model thrown in since he's long overdue an update and the last of the major CSM major characters to be updated.

Here's hoping!

Genestealer Cults might need just a little to return to a decent state:
- expand the units affected by Cult creeds. At the very least Cult vehicles and possibly stealers.
- remove the completely unnecessary point cost nerfs.

(and my personal wish, remove the Brood Brothers restriction from Chimeras, they were Cult transports for most of the faction's modern existence, and they were irreplaceable in that role)

I definitely wooooould not mind a 40k version of the pan-tzeentch AOS book. They already print all the tzeentch daemon psychic powers, and all the tzeentch daemon units except for HQs and flexi-god units like Soul Grinders in the Thousand Sons codex.

GW wanted me to buy a daemon codex to get the datasheets for 4 units, 6 relics, 6 wl traits, and the like 5 stratagems my tzeentch daemons can use. :/

Marines, Necrons and Deathwatch are all locks early in the new edition.

BSF makes me think we might have Traitor Guard at some point before 10th launches in 2023 - but they might also get their launch in the 10th ed. launch box (which will switch back to Chaos for the antagonists).

Squats will be getting something. They were teased with Necromunda and again in Pariah. No idea whether it'll be a full army release or not.

Emperor's Children and World Eaters are obvious choices as well.

Combined with supporting and updating existing lines (e.g. more Aspects for Craftworlds), one major new line in each of 2021 and 2022 is probably all we'll get before the next revolution of the cycle.
