I'm actually a little concerned with what they are leaning toward with Deathwatch. They have said that they will get access to all the models in Indomitus, none of which can take a Deathwatch shoulder pad (what happened to no model no rules?). They might become just another vanilla marine codex with SIA as their "trait".
I know a lot of people want consolidation of armies, but I hate when that is the case once they have already separated them out as an individual force. That would be like putting TSons and DG back into the chaos codex.

Expanding on the BSF stuff?
I wouldn’t mind seeing a sort of NPC type of codex. Cover stuff like Catachan Devils, Ambulls, Zoats. Think natural hazards of the Galaxy for narrative play.
The models themselves would have an appeal to collectors and painters, and even convertors.
We see a glimpse of this with the Warzones presented in Pariah, and I’d love to see it expanded on.
As for proper Codexes?
Lost and the Damned. Cover Dark Mechanicus, Renegade Guard, Chaos Cults etc. It seems ludicrous to me that they’re basically the back bone of Chaos aren’t represented in armies. And hopefully they won’t just be reskinned equivalents of Imperial factions.
Squats. Tease me not, GW. Just.....give us. And make them a Xenos race. They may be ab-human, but another Imperial Faction is not required.
Ynnari. More of these, please. Perhaps with unique units, even if they’re a mash up of existing ones (for example, mixed Aspects?)

just had a quick look at an unboxing and the arm/shoulder being one part is an odd choice, guess the fancy shoulder kits just arent selling
also fingers crossed we all just forget about ynnari,

Ynnari is a great concept that hit an iceberg because the most visually iconic units for most of its force - that being Craftworld Eldar - are all in finecast. Ynnari are an idea of making a new force out of merging two when one of the two is still waiting for some major plastic updates.
I think that hit it hard; that it also only had one model set that was fully unique to itself I think also harmed Ynnari getting off the ground.
I think also a lot of fans who would have picked up Ynnari - ergo Craftworld players, were hesitant to basically invest into another wing of Eldar when they'd rather see GWinvest into Craftworld first.
Ergo why encourage GW to go a different direction when one they already have needs some much wanted love an attention.
I think GW just has to update Craftworld and some of the Dark Eldar - get them in a good position and then those players will be far more fired up for a cross-over army. GW can even do like they've done with Banshee and put some crossover optional parts into new kits to make the transition even smoother.

While I agree on the Craftworlds needing a model revamp, as a Drukhari player I see no benefit to increasing souping or cross-overs.
If I wanted to play Craftworlds, I would be doing so already be doing so. It's like an AdMech player boing told ad naseum that what they really need is to be able to soup more easily with Astra Militarum, as they are after all both human factions and would benefit from being in a single codex.
Unfortunately, I can't see Ynnari going anywhere.

It might fizzle or GW might even make it an entirely new range of Eldar inspired models.
Personally I don't mind soup forces as a theme, I just think its an issue when balance wise, they become far more powerful than regular armies. Making it a mandatory aspect if you want to compete or just to keep up with the "souped" armies. AoS has honestly done really well with having a rules system that weights itself toward pure armies whilst not denying you bringing allies or even running fully souped forces.
If you want you can run a soup Grand Alliance Order army with everything in it, but chances are your pure Khadoran army (which is what was marketed, sold and what draw you to the game) is going to be generally better or at least on-par

You may be right, but I think that the fan reaction to a path that redefined two existing and long term factions was also a factor.
Maybe GW did want to evolve Ynnari as a whole, but most CWE and DE players do not want this and many have been very, very vocal about it. We know, for example, the Jain Zar and the Banshees are very sympathetic to the Ynnari cause in the fluff. But if GW arbitrarily decided to make those permanent Ynnari units and take them away from CWE, fans would tear GW to pieces on every electronic corner of the internet.
If you continue to let them play for both teams, no such problem exists.
I like the Ynnari concept, but if they are going to be carried forward, the best thing GW can do is to create bespoke Ynnari units so that CWE and DE players can stop worrying about our favourite units being syphoned off for a new faction. Do that, and I think more players will embrace Ynnari.
I believe that they are the gateway to Exodite and Eldar Corsair units. This allows GW to take the risk of development of a few units from each; think Halequin sized armies for Corsairs and Exodites; they can technically be fielded as solo, but they are made with intent to ally, which ensures a market even if the new factions are perceived as weak when fielded alone.

harlokin wrote:I could see GW wanting to create some 'grand alliances' for 40k, but the fluff gets in the way somewhat.
In 40K they basically only have one - Imperials. All the other Xenos have no real reason to unit together. You can do a few alliances of situation between most of them, but not down to proper combined arms. Meanwhile Tyranids are always off to the side as their own thing and remained so until Genestealer Cults appeared, which in theory does give them access to a good chunk of the Imperial Soup Potential.
Honestly I think the Grand Alliances for AoS will steadily slip back into a casual game thing. It was a launch idea for the game with the view clearly being that GW would support four Grand Alliances rather than dozens of individual armies. Letting them release a "new army" with a halfdozen model kits and retire ones at a whim; players thus being able to keep going because you wouldn't build a Daughters of Khaine army, you'd build a Grand Alliance Order army.
With GW taking a BIG step away from that approach toward normal armies I figure that they'll keep heading in that direction and steadily focus on fleshing out and expanding the current armies.

Surely Chaos counts as a second GA in 40k? We're currently talking, what, five different factions without R&H or the BSF dudes?

I'd like to see Emperor's Children and World Eaters, being the other two cult legions, getting full fat Codexes as opposed to being relegated to 3 pages in a PA, with the other legions getting Supplements the same way as the Loyalist marines got. Thus we'd have parity of the super special snowflakes getting their own codexes (DA, BA, GK, and SW to DG, TS, WE, and EC) and the slightly less special snowflakes getting supplements. Of course, in an ideal world every subfaction for every codex would get a full supplement but we all know Marines Are Special, so this is a fair middle ground imho. Edit: To second H.B.M.C below, I'd love for a fully supported Renegade/Chaos ex-Imperial Guard codex.

Some sort of Renegades Codex with Traitor Guard I think will come. The BSF Traitor Guard + Sorcerers + 40k Beastmen seem like the first step towards that.
World Eaters seem like an obvious choice as well, and I could see Khorngor making a comeback for that army.
Emperor's Children is the other that I'd like to see fully fleshed out.
Never say never, but Squats are possible at this stage. I won't believe it 'til I see it, but now I cannot count it out.
What do I want to see? I want to see the Hrud. Even if they are just Skaven in spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace, that would be fine. A new Xenos race that can theoretically be anywhere in the galaxy (unlike the far more limited Tau that always need plot contrivances to get them involved) that isn't necessarily The Greatest Threat to the Imperium™ like the Necrons or Tyranids.
What do I think we'll get? Another Primaris expansion and more Death Guard.

To be fair (and I say this with more than a few DW myself) there isn't anything much unique about the deathwatch other than the ammo and the weird mixed unit composition, and even with the ammo they struggle to be more than just codex:sternguard.
IMO the biggest problem with consolidating them at this point is that the marine codex is already starting to develop its own gravitational pull without adding the watchmaster, corvus, and a couple more pages of stratagems.

I want GW to work Chaos like they have in AoS, have a book for each God that let's you mix demons and mortals maybe even have the knights, dark mechanicum and R&H in there. Then just do a CSM book for the sub factions that don't worship a particular God.

With FW OUT of the rules side of the house, I'd LOVE to see GW pick up the very much needed Renegades and Heretics. God, the battles between Adepta Sororitas and cult worshipers would be so iconic to capture. It gives competitive Chaos players access to all the basic elements Guard brings to the Imperium, which makes Chaos a bit more potent and a threat to said Imperium on the tabletop. That's gotta be healthy!
I'd also love to see the other two Chaos cults get their books: Emperor's Children and World Eaters. Going half way with the cult legions and stopping in 8th was almost as big of a crime as letting the Loyal 32 dominate all non-imperium players... and then "fixing" it by giving Imperium a reason to not play them... with Super Doctrines. Let's give them squirrel-y levels of power to not use the Loyal 32... that'll fix the guard and balance the game for everyone having to deal with the super-efficiency of the Imperium!
I'd like to see Ynnari actually get something that isn't brokenly OP or brokenly garbage. I don't consider anything released up to this point to be a proper force. And with the changes in 9th for detachments and army building, Ynnari is practically DOA. Maybe sprinkle in some Exodites and Corsairs (again, since FW is out of the way).
But honestly, I don't think this is as important as fleshing out Chaos. The Xenos seem more-or-less expected to play alone... Chaos is supposed to be the flip-side of the Imperium but basically has a -1 version of the worst units the Imperium has access to. If you want to drive that narrative for Chaos, you need to have their cult legions represented. You need to have the cowardly traitor regiments. Heck, bring in the Dark Mechanicus... so much fun to be had there. Make Chaos able to stand toe-to-toe with the Imperium and make them the antagonist we all deserve.
Not gonna lie, though, I've been liking the Necron releases so far. I hope they put that kind of effort into some of these other releases as well... whatever these releases may be.

I continue to think there might be a Necromunda style IG relaunch/refresh with each major regiment getting a plastic box and maybe a snowflake variant unit as well. (IE this box makes Tallarn Infantry/Veteran Desert Raiders or whatever)
I have no evidence to base this on mind you, but somehow my mind has decided the lack of new IG infantry is proof that something massive is coming.

My out of left field guess is night lords. I really like the new morale phase as it gives lots of room to make it more/less deadly instead of just having the 2 CP stratagem for immunity or losing the whole unit automatically. My guess is they are going to take one of the "fear factions" to highlight this. I think letting night lords adjust what models run away on based on amount/types of units in proximity could be a really cool dynamic type of army in 9th and im guessing night lords will showcase it within 6 months of release

From a general standpoint it might (!) also be interesting to create some kind of "Mercenary" codex. Basically it could include some aliens from the Tau lore, some Ork units, some Corsairs, some renegades. And all those with the addition that they can be allied with anything that currently has nobody to ally with, including a nice lore explanation why they would work for Tau/Necrons/Orks.
Sure, not every combination would make super sense, but it seems kind of fair if those factions could also have some allies like Imperials, Chaos and Aeldari.

I suspect we'll get a new CSM book, and then get new Supplement versions of the 4 cult legions (with PA content rolled in), and perhaps traitor guard/lost and the damned as well.
If GW has any sense, they'll fix Chaos's rules and then also do supplements of the other major Legions too. That'd be a lot of sales.

Blackstone Fortress has seen some more non-Marine chaos cults, traitor guard and mutants so I'd put them as possible.
Similarly BSF has made me wonder if the long, long awaited Imperial Agents/Pirates/Mercenaries isn't possible. One-off units that can be used by several factions like a Zoat, Rogue Trader or Kroot.

2 wounds for CSM, 3 for terminators. Gods how I wish they'd make us good again.

I say this every edition, but after all of the teasing, it's about time for an emperors children codex.
My vote for surprise codex, the fallen. Luther is out there, he has a legion, and we have very little idea what he is up to.
