With 8th edition, datacards were an optional and convenient way to have applicable tactical objectives, psychic powers and stratagems handy during a game, and I bought them for both my armies. When CA 2019 came out with the new maelstrom missions that used the schemes of war rules, these datacards then became mandatory to play those missions. But then psychic awakening came out, giving every faction more stratagems, except GW didn't produce cards for them.

So now my datacards aren't complete any more, and not being a massive fan of the schemes of war rules I'm wondering if it's worth bothering buying datacards for 9th when the new codexes come out.

Has GW ever commented on the lack of cards for psychic awakening?

Do we know yet if maelstrom missions are going to work the same way in 9th?

After the short life cycle of 6th, I don’t buy extra play aids from GW. It’s bad enough shelling out the money for books that become obsolete after a new edition, but at least you can re-read them for old fluff, browse pics, etc. Cards are just dead weight once their edition ends.

I use a program called Magic Set Editor to make my own cards. That way I can have what I need, and add more as new things come out.

Magic Set Editor is a good call, Nevelon - are there suitable templates kicking around for this sort of thing, or have you made your own?

I just use the stock M:tG ones, and add random pics from the internet. I know there are templates out there that might be more appropriate, but that sounds like work to find/import them. All the data entry was tedious enough.

I suspect secondary objectives will most likely replace maelstorm although I guess you could go card decks instead, I think tme mission book will confirm one way or other

I got my 9th edition core book yesterday and this is indeed the case. No more tactical objectives.

Personally I think this is a good change. I prefer playing 40k without cards.

Especially given that I'm going to have to buy yet another SM codex in October now too, invalidating my current book and cards (again).

You could still set up games that use them.

For myself, i got the killteam box that come with cards. I had consider the unit cards to be value adding and was keen to get them, then i got them and they had units written on them already. Great, they useless to me and i just started printing all my own play aids off now.
Have my own laminator and a cutting table, so it can make cards and anything i want up in a afternoon.
