Are you allowed to include Astra Militarum units in a single GSC detachment? Can Valkyries be placed in the flyer spots?

No and No. If you want to take an Astra Militarum detachment with BROOD BROTHERS as a replacement for <REGIMENT>, they need to be in their own detachment.

This means you're paying CP for it. You pay for soup in 9th.

No.

Nothing in the FAQ changes the Brood Brothers rules from Codex Genestealer Cults, The Astra Militarum Brood Brothers Detachment must be separate.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

Could you technically replace <Regiment> with RUSTED CLAW or whatever? Obviously this is unintentional and I remember they tried to patch such things but I can't find the exact wording. Even still, you couldn't get a Valkyrie that way.

In a word, no.

From the 8e rulebook faq:
Q: If I can choose a keyword for a unit, such as <Regiment>
for Astra Militarum, could I choose that keyword to be, for
example ‘Blood Angels’ or ‘Death Guard’?
A: No.

I'm not certain if this is explicitly in the unreleased 9e rulebook, but I would assume it still applies unless we hear otherwise. I would also assume the 9e rulebook will get a launch faq, which might be where they deal with such things if its not explicitly in the book.

In addition to that more general prohibition against merging armies in that way, the BROOD BROTHERS keyword explicitly replaces <REGIMENT> anyway, so the units cannot choose any custom regiment, they must only be BROOD BROTHERS. This is from the GSC codex, and so applies regardless of whether rulebook FAQ is carried over.

This confusing comes from bad wording in the Faction Focus article
First off, army building is a bit easier for the Genestealer Cults. The ability to flexibly add Astra Militarum and a large number of units (both big and small) within a single Detachment is a huge advantage since it guarantees you the full 12 starting Command points.

This appears to say that GSC can put AM codex units in their detachments. In reality the rule textbox shown directly after is the same wording as used in the 8th edition codex.

The AM units the blurp is talking about are the BB units in the GSC codex.

Yes, I can see how that might be confusing.

Yeah, Now break out the Genestealers codex and the FAQs.

Read the 2 Paragraphs of rules after that portion on ARMY FACTION and see how you haven't got the full rules, and see how nothing changes nor removes the latter to paragraphs.

Army Faction is the Whole Battleforged army and shared keyword(s) therein, Detachments must have all units from a shared faction keyword(something that is granted from the third and fourth paragraphs, which also detail how they must be separate detachments from the other GSC detachment), and all detachments must share a keyword for the Army Faction(which, again makes the second paragraph useless because of the last 2).

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

Yeah that picture is simply word for word the first 2 paragraphs of the Brood Brother section of the 8th edition codex.

Nothing has changed.
