Today I released a video talking about my thoughts and hopes for the future of Kill Team going forward, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it as well!

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Yeah, unfortunately with the advent of combat patrol in 9th ed and how GW clearly wants to cover a wider range of points games with the baseline game, the kill team rules as we know it now are not likely to be updated. I could see them trying to incorporate kill team as an update in chapter approved or a relaunched expansion that is more based in 9th ed though
I think Stu Black said on twitch that Kill Team isn't going anywhere, and they have a lot of plans for it. I'm thinking it'll get a new edition at some point, which again will try to make it have more parity with 9th ed 40K. There is a lot for GW to gain from keeping Kill Team alive.
As much as I fancy the idea of 500pt combat patrol 40K games, the fact of the matter is that the individual models (no silly coherency gak) of Kill Team, as well as the interleaved fight sequences, do make it a distinct playing experience over regular 40K. Playing Kill Team (or Necromunda, for that matter) feels more like playing X-Com than regular 40K, and I love that about it.

Kill team is a quick cheap way to get into 40k. Go out and by a box of Marines and BOOM! Kill team.
Even the new board sizes in 9th edition reflect that. A Combat Patrol/Incursion board size is litterally just two Kill Team boards back to back.
Even GW's attitude reflects that. As they said themselves the Indomitus box is not a starter set. Kill Team is GW's new starter set so the idea that GW is going to drop the game is silly. It's just on the back burned for now as they work on releasing 9th.

I disagree, while the support has definitely dropped off this year, I think GW has a strong incentive to continue supporting the game as it's a fantastic entry point in to the hobby.

I think we're more likely to see a KT 2.0 that anything like a chapter approved expansion. Especially considering the number of books one needs to play the "full" game.

Yes! I had the exact same feeling about X-COM and Kill Team! I love the whole feel of each squad member is important and carries their own weight, where in 40K, the unit is either there or not, and indivuals really don't matter.

I think you're quite right about Kill Team being the new "starter set" of the 40K product line. It's a terrific gateway game, and by the time you've fully fleshed out a faction with all the options, you likely have just enough points to be playing a game of Combat Patrol!

The most recent Kill Team product or article was 8 months ago. In the meantime, many Kill Team appropriate units have been released. None of them have Kill Team rules.

It has been quiet on the KT front but it is still getting WD articles - newest addition is the Sisters of Silence.
For now, it could be just that they put any substantial KT releases on hold due to Covid-19 and getting Indomitus out the door. Anything else that was revealed before the lockdown would need to be out the door first. Examples being the AI and AT releases.

I think COVID had a huge part in slowing literally everything down unfortunately. I'm confident we'll see something new soon!

They have already said a bunch of the Indomitus stuff will be in Kill Team, and just about a month ago they released the SOS stuff for Kill Team in a White Dwarf Article.

Yes, that does seem to be the word around the camp fire regarding 9th edition.
Unless the 9th edition rule book included skirmish rules with independent movement, alternating activations and a selection of units and rules for each faction, its hard to see how it will replace Kill Team for 100 to 200 point games.

That would be super cool to have a mini-Indomitus for Kill Team. Even a Marine-Necron replacement for First Strike would be an indirect big release for Kill Team and hopefully such a set would have easy-to-build Flayers.

I think people will initially be very hot on Combat Patrol (including myself) but the core rules for 9th do explicitly state that if you are playing a smaller force than a certain power level, to go to Kill Team instead, which I think is a huge hint to the future.
Yes, Combat Patrol seems decent enough and definitely the first step towards going deeper with a faction whereas Kill Team leans towards mulitple factions. Looking forward to it with Harlequins which I took as a team with a foot in both games.
Speaking of which, I do hope there is both a Harlequin start collecting box and faction set in the works. That would be absolutely smashing!

Yes, I think they really owe it to the 'Quins to get a start collecting set. I'm sure it would be absolutely great value, especially if they came out with a new vehicle unit for them or something like that!
Absolutely. Mimes could also be a candidate as scout/infiltrators, which would be ideal for Kill Team. A slightly cheaper points option to the players.

Why the blatant misinformation?
The have been three WD articles this year, one of which (a month ago) was a new faction.

Which is exactly what you'd expect someone with a shortsighted sales target to say.
Also, the regular reminder that GW retail staffers have no special insight into what's coming more than a couple of weeks out.

White Dwarf 454 was last month, and introduced rules for Sisters of Silence. Perhaps you are confusing them with Sisters of Battle, which were introduced in the KT Annual, which came out end of 2019 iirc.
As far as what factions I'd like to see in a new starter set...
I think I'd like Tyranids. Possibly with them releasing a new plastic Lictor, since it's such a cool idea and fits perfectly with them theme of Kill Team.
As the opposing faction either package the Nids with the Guard for a little "Starship Troopers" vibe, or stay fluff apropriate and go with Blood Angels.. real devestation of Baal type stuff.
Speaking of Blood of Baal, its a shame GW didn't consider getting Kill Team in on the action with the Psychic Awakening series. BOB would have been ideal as a Rogue Trader style expansion.
Its also a pleasure to meet another player who appreciates the delicate tastes of the Tyranid Hive Fleets.

I don’t see how combat patrol really competes with kill team. They play very differently. Half my love of kill team is a direct result of alternating activations
Well. After the big reveal of the changes to the Marine and weapon profiles for 9th edition... Really starting to think Kill Team needs a second edition.
Transhuman Physiology really doesn't quite represent mini-Marines and their new 2 wound profile, and the changes to things like the Meltagun and Heavy Bolter could be quite interesting in Kill Team.
Really hoping GW come back around to this game to clean it up a hair and give it needed updates
Depends how much the other factions will change, but would rather they do those for the 2020 annual. Apart from a few point changes the 2019 annual didn't have any rule updates to make it worth purchasing.
If they do cut to a new edition of Kill Team so soon then glad I only got the core manual.
I'm pretty sure some sort of change will be forthcoming which will bring KT more in line with 9th edition 40K. Changes in terrain rules and the new datasheets and wargear will be trickling down to KT as well.. But as to when, I got no idea.
I wouldn't mind waiting long enough for the new stats for all 40K factions to get released before the new KT "edition". Better to get it all in one go IMO
I'd also love it if there was a way to link KT with #new40k somehow, via crusade or something like that. If the rules were similar enough, one could maybe combine both systems in a narrative crusade.

Yeah, I agree. After seeing all those changes incoming, I think it signals even more a time for a new edition, or those updates trickling in via Kill Team Annual 2020.

Hopefully, it'll be well implemented no matter how they do it.

There's nothing stopping you right now from working out some homebrew stuff with your playgroup to combine both in a narrative format!
