I had a thought, with no particular slot in mind for its implementation, but I thought it could be pretty cool for som special sort of weapon, no doubt destined for a primaris squad if it were to happen.

The idea is for weapons which are effective at hindering vehicles without necessarily causing damage - disrupting circuitry, using EMP, or loosing a gretchin in the worky bits.

Crippling: If a model with multiple damage brackets suffers one or more unsaved wounds from a weapon with this rule, that model uses one damage bracket lower (if available) until the start of the firers following turn.

so you might shoot a knight, chip a wound off and the knight be bracketed for a turn - dropping to its next lower profile.

it would have to be expensive, but could be an effective trick. Any thoughts on whether it's any good of an idea, and what it might go on? Necrons strike me as a prime candidate, as do Tau, and maybe the shokk-attack gun, as it is firing snotlings into the inside of the tank!

Maybe it could make the vehicles crew shaken, or stunned in order to explain why the vehicle is less effective. And in doing so maybe the vehicle can only hit on 6's.

I think a better implementation is to just have the weapon inflict a to-hit or movement penalty to the target -In fact I think a couple of FW guns do this.

This is basically what haywire weapons used to be. They weren't all that good at actually killing vehicles, but they were very good at inflicting "glancing" damage that caused vehicles to shoot less, move less, or suffer limited permanent damage.

In 8th, I would have liked to see such weapons inflicting to-hit penalties. In 9th, the cap on to-hit modifiers kind of limits how useful that would be. Especially given that many haywire weapons are aeldari in nature and aeldari already have plenty of ways to get to-hit modifiers.

Treating the target's damage bracket as one lower is an interesting way of getting around the limit on to-hit penalties and have the added benefit of lowering other stats as well. On the other hand, there are plenty of targets that probably should be impacted by such weapons that wouldn't be. A dreadnaught and sentinel would both have been impacted by haywire attacks in the past but wouldn't be impacted by some_bloke's proposed "crippling" rule. A non-emp equivalent that works against monstrous creatures would weirdly not work against a carnifex.

. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

One of the interesting possibilities opened up by something like this is that the "max of +/- 1" only applies to dice rolls not characteristics themselves.

Having Haywire and Crippling (Crippling applying to Monsters, Haywire to vehicles) could allow for things like lowering their Toughness values, Movement, or turning off auras or any number of weirdness for things...and I'm totally down for more bespoke weapon rules or stratagems tied to them!

One of my biggest beefs with the Skitarii's Transauranic Arquebus and Neutron Lasers are that we lost the 'flavor' for them. Transauranic had Armourbane(roll 2D6 and add them together for Armor Penetration values) while Neutrons had 'Concussive'. Both were rules you just didn't see all that much, IMO, but they made for some uniqueness and a hell of a surprise for someone on the receiving end.

Well the Arq is S7 now, so that's about even for trying to kill AV11 two editions ago. Concussive was lost because Initiative was lost but a rule to treat anyone hit by the weapon at -M2" would be a good way to kinda implement that element back.

-2" to Movement, or just saying they can't advance might work. That's what the forgeworld dark eldar Reaper does.
