So I was looking at the latest post forum(I think that's what you would call it) and I was clicking refresh and I began to wonder: "how many posts are there per minute" and then went looking for a suitable part of the forum to post it in. So I would like to know your best estimate of the posts per minute on this forum, and maybe even how it would compare to other forums or forum like sites(such as the wh40k subreddit).
Edit: Its probably a good idea to separate new topics per minute(or hour) from replies per minute. My estimate for new topics per hour is maybe 1-3 seems likely, and about 2-5 replies per minute is my guess, but I dunno.

The site admins could probably just query that and break it down over any time span they wanted. I say probably because I don't know how the site data is stored.

Down at the bottom of the page at the top of the Who;;s online section there is a total number of messages listed. Get a couple of data points and some averages? It would be rough, no idea how often it updates, but should be a ballpark.

I could ask the site admins, but it just doesn't fell right, of course, that's probably because I have a subconscious tendency to make everything hard on myself, and also I don't feel like interrupting an admin just to ask some stupid question.

Thanks!
Ok, so I took what I think the sites founding date was(1997) so this site has been around for 23 years, so the total number of posted messages being 10,726,179, I divided it(in a calculator) by 23, and got 466,355.608695652, which i then divided by 365 and got 1,277.68659916617, which is a daily message count on average(I think), and i divided the number by 24 for the hourly average,
and got 53.23694163192376, which means that if we divide that by 60, we get 0.8872823605320627, which I will round up to 1, give or take 50%, and we have an average of 0.5-1.5 posts per minute ON AVERAGE.
If anyone wishes to correct any mistakes in the math, feel free to do so.

While a lifetime average is interesting, it’s probably massively skewed. I’d take numbers 24 hours apart and do the math from there. Or a week.

I wouldn't know where to find those numbers, if you know feel free to tell me.

Interesting question, I am also intrigued

Write down the number now
Wait 24 hours
Write down new number
Subtract the first from the second.

That should roughly give you the posts per day. Math out from there. Assuming that post count is accurate and updated regularly.

If it's a SQL DB running the query would take no time.

I took a look, did some refreshing, and the post counter appears to be real time(as long as you regularly refresh that is) so that is gives me hope.

did the math and the PPM on this forum has been 1.1(which is very close to my original estimate of 0.5-1.5) from 3:19 pm through about 6:20 pm, which was 4 hours, with an hourly post rate of 66, and given that number, the daily post rate can be estimated to be about 1600 PPD(posts per day if you don't get it) and that basically answers this topics question.

A related question would be when “peak” time is. As an international forum, when do we get the most posts? First thing in the morning over coffee? After dinner? And who’s timezone? And how does Wednesday stack up to the other days?

A 4 hour slice of American afternoon might be when Europe is asleep. If you want more reliable numbers, more data would help. For some pretty graphs, you could get data every hour and make some nice plots.

Posts on the current incarnation of the site only go back as far as March 2006.

Based on your new(to me) info, I put the numbers through a calculator, and got ~1.5, which tells me the site is a little past it’s prime.
(Sorry if this is a double post. I had posted this, but then I got redirected, and was logged out, so I restarted my device, and the post didn’t show up, so sorry for any inconvenience)

That’s an awfully big conclusion to jump to from one data point.

By past its prime I mean that there have probably been times when the site has had more people on it. I'm not saying this forum is dead, it is still very much alive. And it makes sense that this forum is not as active as it once was, because forums as a whole, from what I can tell, haven't been doing as well as they once did. Who knows, maybe some day in the future there will be a time where this forum gets 2 PPM.

I think that's exactly right. If Dakka has averaged 1.5 ppm over its lifespan, we can infer there's a peak in there that's higher (say, 2 ppm). Still being at 1 ppm isn't half bad, and as noted it's just that forums, as a whole, have been losing content to social media and the like for some time now. Dakka is a bit like a rock in the currents

Anyway, thanks for crunching some numbers on this, Misclicking ork!
