I have ordered an Indomitus box with a friend and I intend on starting a Blood Angels army with my Space marine half of the box. As we're both new to 40k (long time AoS/WFB players) i have no idea about the codexes and which i should buy. Should I get the current Blood Angels one or wait for the new space marines release in October?

If you can wait to play you should wait until october for the new Space Marine codex. Buying the Blood Angels codex right now just for it to become useless in two months seems like a wasted purchase. If you want the rules to be able to play you could subscribe to the 40k app until the new codex drops, that way you will have access to all your rules for a much smaller cost.

First things first: welcome to the hobby in general and 40K in particular. I hope you enjoy the ride and stay with us for a long time!

Sooner or later you need a current codex for your army. Right now might not be the best time to buy it though. See, a new edition means a new codex for all factions - and the Marine book is right around the corner. It's out either late September or early October, and as a BA player you will need it. So if you want to wait that long and save some money: do it.

Blood Angels will get an additional supplement book to the codex later on (either late 2020 or early 2021) which you will also need.

If you are happy with spending money on the current codex: there is background and colour schemes in it that won't suddenly vanish with the next book. You can also play with the "proper" BA rules right away. It depends on what you want from your game right now, and if you want to invest that money now or later.

The Space Marines Codex that should come out soon (probably) isn’t going to be for Blood Angels. The Codex: Space Marines are for what are called Codex Compliant Chapters. Blood Angels, Dark Angels, and Space Wolves are their own book because they “deviate from the Codex” significantly. If you want a blood Angels, your codex is likely coming, but at an unknown time.

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.

That's not quite correct. In 8th edition (and since 4th before) you would be right. In 9th edition Blood Angels will use both the "normal" Space Marines Codex as well as a supplement book on top.

From what I see that’s possible, it’s also possible they’re get their own codex and a supplement. I’d wait until the codex actually comes out before I bought it for a non-Codex chapter.

From what GW stated, it seems to be the "standard codex plus add-on", anything else requires creative reading in my opinion. By waiting you are on the safe side though, true.

It's on october. GW already flat out said it. So preorder on 3th, 10th, 17th, 24th or 31st. Most likely 3th or 10th. With instore day week later.

But yeah wait for codex. If you really need rules subscribe to app. It's not best but it's cheaper even for 1 codex and you can use it with your friends to get them all.

Uhhh no. GW already flat out said that all par GK are in basic codex with supplement(like ultramarines etc). We have even seen new chapter traits for all chapters from new codex. Including blood angels, dark angels etc.

Blood angels will get supplement to go along with basic marines. This is flat out said by GW! It's not theory, wishlist or anything. It's straight from horses mouth. We have even SEEN page from codex proving this. Or why you think blood angel chapter trait is in new marine codex?

That’s what i saw too.
For fans of the Dark Angels, Space Wolves, Blood Angels and Deathwatch?

If you have one of these armies, good news – not only do you get a shiny new core codex with loads of new toys to play with, but you also have a new codex supplement on the way. You’ll be able to tailor your Space Marines force to fully embody the theme and spirit of their Chapter, and of course, include all their unique units and heroes.

A shiny New Codex, not necessarily THIS shiny new Codex. I have UM and DA (among others) and I would get it for the UM, if not for that I’d wait until I was sure they were all getting merged.

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.

No. It's explicitly this codex in October,

They even showed the chapter tactics pages, and the special snowflake chapters are there.

It's this codex plus a supplement for BA. There will be no other codex.

There are rules for the Indomitus units in the Indomitus box. I'd just use those until the Codex arrives in October. You'd want to buy the new Space Marines Codex once it's out. If you get more seriously into the game, there will be a Blood Angels supplement sometime after the Codex that will add Chapter-specific special characters, relics and strategems to expand things. The Chapter supplements aren't necessary to play the Chapter though.

Uh gw sais they get merged. We have seen page from new codex showing traits. Since it makes no sense to put say da trait to marine codex if da also get own book and supplement guess you believe da will need 3 book. Marine codex for trait, da book for something and supplement for something...

Yeah Breton, you're not exactly right on this. It's one single Space Marine Codex, that will cover all Space Marines, apart from Grey Knights. I'd advise OP to just wait, play with the datasheets that come in the boxes of models until the full Codex comes out.

Read up a few paragraphs...

The new Codex: Space Marines will replace the current Space Marine codex, as well as the other First Founding and Deathwatch codexes – making it an invaluable tome that covers all those elements common across the forces of the Space Marines. A literal Codex Astartes.

Most of the Indominus box has shoulderpads as part of the arm, so swapping out to the BA sculpted ones is going to take a lot of carving. Head swaps and the little extras should still work.

I think just a nice red paint job would work. Depending on your skill with a knife, the upgrade pack, or a BA specific box (like their tac squad) mined for bits could work. But these are monopose, so converting is not the easiest thing to do.

As stated by GW in all editions the Blood and Dark Angels are mostly Codex Compliant in line with many many other Chapters. Some people like to pretend this is not the case....plenty of other Chapters have the same level of differences and name changes.

Wolves have quite a bit of variation (Sadly more so with every edition)

All of them will use the main Index and a supplement to cover the few actually unique units

for the OP there is no point in buying current SM codex unless you just want to read up on it. Its clear there are huge changes in stat lines, weapons and units so the rules element of the current dex will be worthless in a couple of months
