its a quick question. since i converted one from a Nob set, i dont have any 40mm bases as it stands right now, but do i need a 40mm base? Or am i allowed, officially, to use a 32mm base for him as well?

Hope, is the first step on the road to disappointment.

You should be ok for two reasons: the Big Mek with KFF doesn't have an official model and tipycally conversions with different bases are not allowed if the replaced base is bigger than the original one since the model would extend his aura further, covering a bigger portion of the table. Slightly smaller bases for characters shouldn't be an issue, it's actually a disadvantage competitively speaking.

Oh yea i see how that might be an actual disadvantage for me.
Maybe i should try and find a 40mm base somewhere

There’s loads of cheap bases on eBay. You can 5 40mm bases for a couple of quid on there.

I have a similar situation but switched around
I'm converting an old marine dread to be my big-mek (makes sense to me, he's the warlord, so he should be the biggest).
I'm not interested in modelling for advantage (otherwise why would my warlord be twice as big as he has to be!) but I'm unsure about the basing.
I can put him on a 40mm base, but the model will overhang (obvs), but with the bigger dread base, I have issues with the KFF radius and CC engagement.
So, is it cool to have a model that overhangs a base, would potential opponents have an issue here?

For a tournament, ask your TO and be prepared to have them say "You can't use that model."
For a friendly game, I wouldn't have any issues-but reasonable people will vary on this.

That's good. Yeah, I wasn't considering it for tournies... keep to the vanilla/ GW approved/staying well within the box, models for those.
I've got him on the 40mm base now, and he actually looks pretty good, like a mad careering mek-masheen I'll have to weight it though! Automatically Appended Next Post: For the OP - In my opinion as long as you aren't gaining an advantage, then I would find it hard to say no.
But as you can see above, tourny organisers may have a different opinion, as may salty opponents
