Hi All,
I’m looking at getting into Orks and was looking for some advice on a 1500-2000pt Ork list that is fun but can still hold its own a bit. I’m not looking at being overly competitive yet, but happy to build a force I can win some games with.
Thanks in advance for any help,
Boyce

What models do you have available?

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

I have nothing so far, so I’m starting from fresh. I’ve played mostly SM or DKOK In the past so I fancied a change, and I’ve always found a horde of Greenskins on the table to look ace

Do you have an issue with fielding (and painting!) 200+ infantry models? Or would you prefer a bunch of vehicles and bikes? Stompy robots?
Are there any models you absolutely want to play?

I have no issue with that as my DKOK is pushing 100+ infantry models plus tanks.
But I’m happy to be mostly infantry with some vehicles etc thrown in for flavour.
I do like the idea of a warboss on a bike or deathtrike if they’re any good to field. Plus some of the Mel gun variants sound tasty so would like some of them thrown in

Sadly the warboss on warbike has been errata'ed out of existence yesterday.
In general, for orks it's bad idea to mix infantry and vehicles, as your main defensive is having more infantry or vehicles than your opponent has guns. If you mix both, you provide optimal targets for all their guns and end up tabled.
An infantry based list would revolve around 5+ mobs of 30 boyz, backed up by big meks with KFF, weird boyz with da jump, warpath or a clan power. You can add a painboy or Mad Doc Grotznik if you want, but they aren't mandatory.
If you want to go all out on the green tide theme, add one or more mobs of stormboyz, though they quite expensive right now.
Currently the best shooting option for such a list would be smasha guns or KMK if you don't want to sell a kidney for some grot guns. The rule described above doesn't really apply to mek guns because they are dirt cheap pointswise.
Tank bustas can be used as well by tellyporting them in, but be aware that they are dead the turn after - so make it count.
MANz and kommandoz can grab objectives or perform actions to generate VP:
Ghazgkull Thrakka also feels very much at home in such a list, especially when you decide to make all of them goff.
As for klans, deffskulls, evil suns and goff are all decent picks for a footslogging list.

Cheers for the info. I had seen online that an ork list that did well in GT’s had 3 battalions in it, all with a different Klan And it had a lot of gretchin in the list

I would say that you need to cram as much into your battalions as possible to make the most out of the refunded CP so that you can spend it on things like Biggest Boss and Kustom Jobs.
I would also say lean very heavy into whatever playstyle you settle on and make sure you have redundancy in your units. Killing one of something is easy, killing 3 is not so easy.
And meganobs. Meganobs are looking to be awesome so far this edition, especially if you go Deathskulls.

That sounds like an 8th edition list. Those kind of lists are dead.
If anything, you would take a battalion and add a patrol for a second clan. Gretchin aren't that great anymore since their price almost doubled and they no longer generate CP.
The main reason to bring a second clan in a horde list would be to have Thrakka, a Pain boy and some scarboyz all benefit from the goff culture while your other units benefit from another culture less focused on hitting stuff in melee.

Ah right. That makes sense as it was from a post from the start of the year before 9th release. Automatically Appended Next Post: Ok so a bit of an update. I have managed to buy Prophecy of the Wolf from a FLGS and can build off of that as a force. Using that as a base what do you recommend I add to the force and what klan rules and loadouts to use (including numbers for the units)? That way I can start a shopping list for the army and begin building and painting Automatically Appended Next Post: Scrap the last about Prophecy of the wolf. Just got a refund as their online stock count was incorrect

You should definitely get a second box of MANz to improve their numbers to 5 or 6, depending on whether you want the big mek. Make sure to not glue their weapons, that way you can switch them at will without magnets.
As for the nobz in that box, you can either build them as nobz, combine them with a box of flash gits into 10 flash gits or combine them with two boxes of warbikers into nob bikers. None of the options is particularly competitive, though I'd say it's flash gits > biker nobz > nobz.
Or you just use them as squad leaders, just make sure to keep the killsaw, it's the only one you have
Get another 9 boxes of boyz and five smasha guns and you'll find yourself with a decent green tide that you can run as goff or evil suns.
