Was just having a nostalgic dig through the 2nd ed Chaos Codex (glorious book), and was reminded of an option in there that never actually came to pass... which frankly is a damn shame, because that unit was Noise Marine Terminators. How badass would that have been?! I can only hope that if Emperor's Children get a Codex like Death Guard and Thousand Sons have, that something akin to this will surface, but I'm not holding my breath.
Any other units out there that never saw a proper model release? Let's hear 'em - and if you've got conversions, let's see 'em too!

At this point a noise marine terminator kit is nearly inevitable IMO, Emperor's Children have a big centerpiece primarch, big centerpiece primarchs print money and the standard release for a sub-faction of chaos is
-special marines
-special cult terminators
-Primarch
-2-3 unique weird daemon engines
-3-4 unique characters
I'll list a few of my own:
Old Zogwart and Wazdakka Gutsmek. Sadly GW just released a biker warboss kit and did not see fit to bring back Wazdakka, despite the Wartrike being the perfect opportunity to make a giant biker warboss.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!" |

Tyranids have had a few over the years:
1) Spike rifles and such. Termagaunts did have these way back in 1st gen models; but since things went plastic they've never had them. Yet there was a time that they had access to several weapon options that never appeared
2) Parasite of Mortex, The DOOM and perhaps one or two others I forget. Basically elite/hero/unique style tyranids. The Parasite was neat in that it basically flew around injecting units with rippers; the Doom was basically a super powered zoanthrope (neurothrope sort of replaces it in concept).
3) Shrieks. Technically FW made wings for warriors to make them into Shrieks; but whilst they've appeared in the codex in the past, they've never had a model of their own.
4) Catachan Devil. Has been hinted that its a very early scouting tyranid lifeform that seemed to go native having been left in the Galaxy for so long prior to the swarms arrival. It's one of those "Oh maybe if they made something big and new we might get it" models.
Otherwise Tyranids are not in too bad a spot model wise. They've not really lost many things over the years either; at least in the form of troops. Though they have lost and gained when it comes to multiple arm options for some units like carnifex and the like

Killer Klaivex
The dark behind the eyes.
|
Corsairs:
- Corsair Prince
- Void Dreamer
- Malevolents
- Balestrike Band
- Basically everything else apart from the 2 models that still have rules.
Back in 7th, I had a go at making an unusual Corsair Prince with Jet Pack and Voidblade:
Not great, I know, but I liked Mandrakes and had had relatively little experience converting models.
Dark Eldar, where to even begin?
Archon with Jetbike
Archon with Skyboard
Dracon
Haemonculus with Jetbike
Haemonculus with Skyboard
Haemonculus Ancient
Asdrubael Vect
Kheradruakh the Decapitator
Lady Malys
Baron Sathonyx
Duke Sliscus
Trueborn (used to use the same models as Kabalites but apparently that doesn't count anymore)
Bloodbrides (used to use the same models as Wyches but apparently that doesn't count anymore)
There's also a lot of wargear that was never modelled:
- Djin Blade
- Archangel of Pain
- Animus Vitae
- Dark Gate
- Orb of Despair
- Shattershard
- Clone Field (sigh, farewell alternative option to Shadowfields)
- Ghostplate Armour (technically still exist on Scourges but were never modelled as a character option)
As far as conversions go, most of the above have long since been removed, so I couldn't see a great deal of point. The closest I've come are a couple models which could potentially represent skyboard (or winged) Archons, should such a thing ever come to pass again:
I should emphasise, though, that these models weren't intended to represent Archons. Skyboards hadn't been a thing for ages, so there would have been no point. The first model was just me trying to create a 'fallen angel' from DE bits (can't even remember why, tbh). The second was me experimenting with what an albino Mandrake would look like. I liked it but didn't actually have much to do with it, so I tried adding wings as an experiment. I think Scourge wings work better than the tiny Vargheist wings I used for the Corsair Prince above. In hindsight, I wish I'd used different legs for him. However, especially since it was only done as an experiment, I foolishly didn't consider that until after I'd already spent ages getting the wings right (and so I now don't want to risk damaging them or having to repaint them by transplanting his torso).

Can't believe I forgot how much stuff Dark Eldar and Tyranids used to have. I remember having some of the spike rifle Termies myself (or - well - my brother did), that was an awesome looking weapon.

Wazdakka Gutsmek is probably one of the most famous ork characters after Thrakka, but never has had an official model. Old Zogwort is another character that was axed in 7th edition, who was famous for turning enemy characters into squigs. Mad boyz keep getting mentioned in the lore as boyz who have more affinity to the warp and go insane because of that. As for death guard, the codex talks about three types of lords in the legion: Lords of Contagion, Lords of Poxes and Lords of Virulence. So far, we have seen only one of them.

There's a whole slew of models from circa 2nd/3rd ed that never got releases. Mainly special characters.
Chaos:
All of the firstborn Daemon Princes- N'Kari, M'Kachen, Doombreed and Foulspawn (you said you wanted to see conversions- here's my version of Foulspawn never got minis.
Eldar:
Exodite Dragon Knights in the 2nd ed codex and Iyanna Arienal and Nuadu Fireheart in the 3rd ed codex. The Craftworld supplement also introduced a Saim Hann HQ on a jetbike, whose name escapes me right now who never got an actual mini, only a convsersion.
Dark Eldar:
5th ed codex is covered but in the 3rd ed one they never got a model for Decapitator, nor did he get one in 5th. Lady Malys and (technically) Asdrubael Vect (the 5th ed codex had him on foot and the model was a remnant of the old line when he was exclusively mounted on his Ravager). Here's my Lady Malys. sorry for the gakky Photobucket pics, I've never took new ones.
Orks:
Most stuff for Orks was never made as you were expected to convert it. Looted Wagons and Lootas (back when they could literally take another squad's options) never had minis. They have also been missing since forever Mega Armoured Warbosses, Bike Warbosses, Wazzdakka, (an updated with the rest of the line) Nazdreg.
Imperial Guard:
Vendettas and Various character options like combi weapons (that disappeared after the 3rd ed codex) and I can only think of a single special character for them that never got a mini- Lukas Bastonne.
Sisters of Battle:
Only really missing a few special characters surprisingly. Cardinal Armandus Helfire, Helena the Virtuous and Saint Praxedes.
Space Marines:
Sergeant Lysander (never got a mini till he became a captain), Ancient Helveticus, Captain Invictus, Ranulf, Moriar the Chosen and probably a few others I can't remember.

Imperial Guard weapon options are definately a thing. You're hard pressed to find guardsmen sized stormbolters or bolters but these appeared numerous times in the wargear lists. [A Commissar with a stormbolter was a good choice, once!]
There's never been a difference in Platoon, Regimental and Company standards either, despite being different things. If anyone is going to pretend the elaborate nonsense that comes in the box is supposed to be the standard for your average Imperial Guard platoon, then I don't think you know much about standards.
Rough Riders, likewise, have precious little of the options they were ever meant to have. Hunting Lances and Chainswords? Yes. Two special weapons a squad? Ye wot?
Likewise the all metal pretorians are missing like, a ton of options. No plasma guns in the guard for you, son!
I can't remember if we technically have a chainsword that doesn't have Sergeant Stripes on the arm, either. I think there's one in the command squad box.

Lets face it Exodite is a concept that GW has never touched on but continues to dangle before players. They have kept mentioning it often in the lore and "about Eldar" pages and such, but the concept has never had so much as a single model (if it has then its an old infantry only model or one or two rare items in old Epic/Titan Legions).
I can never work out if its because its something GW wants to do and just never has found the designs/team/finances to do it or considers it too high risk. Or perhaps if its just there as an idea and they expect us to make our own dinosaurs out of the Seraphon line of models.

Grimtuff, I'm glad you reminded me about Iyanna Arienal. She's had mentions in the fluff ever since - 5th ed Iyanden Codex of course, and her switch over to Ynnari - and I always wanted to convert a model to represent her.
Some of her old fluff had her with a Wraithlord bodyguard, the idea was I was going to plonk a Farseer or Spiritseer or something atop a Wraithlord's shoulders and use it as a Wraithseer in-game.

I converted a mini for her back in the day, made from a Warlock with a headswap for another mini (I forget which) and boobs made from blu tack hardened with superglue. That's the kind of conversion 14yo Grimtuff does!

Ku'gath Plaguefather (he's basically been replaced by Rotigus Rainfather now, though he still appeared in 8th edition lore)
I'd like to say CSM Chosen because their models only appeared as part of a starter set and aren't available anymore. And the models from the starter were monopose and hardly featured the options of the unit.

Inquisitors from the WH/ DH era were mostly conversion only due to the large armoury and limited single-piece model line. IIRC the only inquisition model with interchangable arms was the DH terminator inquisitor... from 1989. They are still the 'current' terminator inquisitor too. The warrior acolytes were almost all counts-as.
Later on inquisitor Valeria from the GK codex was also missing in action (along with grand master mordrak and justicar thawn)
Grimtuff wrote:Sisters of Battle:

There was an sister famulous model waaay back that was never released. It was a unit from the chapter approved codex that didn't make it into the witch hunters release.
And of course the ever missing characters with jump packs and models with eviscerators.
Many forgeworld characters/units have had either no release or in a few cases a release window of less than a year, as well as a few of the other 4e and earlier codex named characters like Sammaels landspeeder and Iyanna Arienal(apparently another made but unreleased sculpt).

The Cadian kit from FW was just weird. It was shotgun specifically, one kit for Elysians and one for Cadians. Lukas Bastonne was a big missed opportunity for a cool Cadian Kasrkin character.

EDIT- yes, he had the Rage USR.
I give, which book was he printed in with USRs? He definitely wasn't in the 3rd ed book.
Looking back to the 2nd ed 'dex, he doesn't feature Frenzy, or anything like that, though his background does mention an aggressive temprament. He has two special bionics - the Eye of the Falcon, which gave him +1 to hit with any weapon he fired; and the Crushing Arm of Kamir, which meant he could double the number of hits he made in close combat, if he was lucky.
Browsing the 2nd ed 'dex also reveals Stumper Muckstart, a Ratling SC who could either make a Trick Shot to fire D3 times, or make a Killer Shot to improve the AP of his needle rifle by D3.

Cool Incubi, though, I remember those two being in high demand when GW mail order sold bits.

Aye, the Incubi with jackets were rather cool - and I still have a soft spot for that faux-marble paintjob.

Vendettas and Various character options like combi weapons (that disappeared after the 3rd ed codex) and I can only think of a single special character for them that never got a mini- Lukas Bastonne.
The Attilan special character from the 2nd edition Codex didn't get a release either, though my mind has gone blank as to what his name was.
Mogul Kamir.
Forgot about him. with our combined powers he is remembered fully! Seem to remember him being a bit naff as he had some rule where he had to move towards the nearest enemy (or something like that. I think it was a USR that got dropped in later editions).
He was in the 5th ed IG dex too. I seem to recall him and only a few other models actually having Rage as a USR, as it was that niche.

That’s assuming Fulgrim is released. Unless you’re thinking Magnus who is for Thousand Sons? Noise Marines are Slaneesh and if he were coming out I would have assumed he would have been released at the same time as a Keeper or Secrets.

Not really - if I remember correctly, the Keeper was the last of the Greater Daemons to get updated, so it was already due a new model anyway, and its timing had more to do with a Slaanesh Daemons release wave than anything Emperor's Children.
It's not like Mortarion was released anywhere near the Great Unclean One, or Magnus near to the Lord of Change.

There's like a dozen units that the imperial guard codex lost over the past couple editions. Penal legions, a bunch of special characters like Gaunt, Al Raheim, Bastonne, Chenkov, Mogul Kamir, units like rough riders, medusas, colossi, griffons, vendettas.
Not to mention GW discontinuing anything that's not cadian or catachan, eliminating like a half dozen regiments.
