So, a couple of months ago, I was browsing various Miniatures sites doing some window shopping and discovered that many historical Miniatures, specifically Perry Miniatures, tend to run on the cheap side. Now, I already own a significant Guard army, so it's a little too late for that, but I remembered that 30k had Imperialis Militia that could be taken as allies. I already have an Ultramarines army, but recently "trimmed" it down from 4k points to 3k (well, really I just reorganized such that some went to my 40k army), so had points to spare.

I've created a basic allied list of Levies, Force Commander, a couple Ogryns, and two Leman Russ Annihilators (likely will be unavailable to use them in 40k anymore, but could get a new lease on life if put into a 30k list).

However, before I leap whole hog into this, I have to ask: how prevalent are non-GW minis in 30k Militia lists? Do people use them to represent different worlds? Do people mostly use the old Cadians/Kreig/kitbashes of GW models? My local group certainly accepts 3rd party stuff, but is that attitude generally prevalent or mostly rare?

I use 3rd party minis for all my armies. I do try to stick to the vehicles generally (especially common ones like the Russ).

But I know most players here would rather see you put some TLC into your army to make it yours, rather than a hundred copies of the same bland miniatures. Even if you play space marines, you can spruce them the way FW has.

Sounds like the majority of your force is GW/FW stuff - third party or straight custom minis for signature or special models is generally approved of as long as they 'fit in'
There was a great army in a guerilla miniature games batrep a while back which had custom robot models representing the medicae orderlies which i plan on copying at some point because its a awesome idea

I guess to clarify my idea: I'd still be using official models for the Ogryns and some Leman Russ Annihilators (kitbashed) that I already have. The 3rd party models in question would be the Levies and the Force Commander. Specifically, I'd be using Napoleonic Austrian Infantry, as the crested helmets fit the 40k aesthetic very well.

I'm doing a little bit with my Ultramarines: mostly Silver/Blue for the grunts and doing Gold/Blue for the officers, some special helmets here and there, and the Company Command boys (besides the standard bearer) have Invictarii helmets, kitbashed Combi-Bolters, and a blend of Mk III and Mk IV, with the Mk IV using 40k Mk VII torsos as that was closest to the Invictarii torsos. Granted, it's not much, but it's a lot of work to customize 100+ bodies, especially when going primarily for disposability.

Not sure how much if anything to do with the Austrians. They already have crested helmets, and not much 30k/40k bits fit them as they're slightly smaller than Guardsmen.

Yeah, no that's fine.

My levies for my slaanesh Chaos cult are necromunda gangers, random models from my bits bin, AOS models, nongw fantasy models, bashed with historicals, etc.

My whole Militia Force is now nearing 4000 points and is all Victoria Miniatures Siege Corps except for the tanks. I think3rd party minis, especially for Militia are great, since the gw stuff all is instantly recognizable as Cadian, DKoK, etc... plop down some well done third party stuff and suddenly you can have a cool convo about your Militia, and what planet they hail from etc...

Victory is the will to expend lives and munitions in attack, overmatching the defenders’reserves of manpower and ordnance.
