My personal Vectorum the Iron Blight are Death Guard of the 2nd Company who carry the Ferric Blight. I decided to paint them in a Iron Warriors like scheme and add the Ferric Blight as the key contrast. I've been working on them off and on for a few years now (New baby slowed that down) and I've been working on the rust effect for some time. I still don't know if I've got it right and would love some C&C on the rust effect. Mostly, I just want to know if I'm "Selling it". I've been working on this so long and so sporadically, that I can't tell anymore. What I really want is an effect that sells the realism of the rust and also tells the story of the Ferric Blight.

Could some of yall please take a look and tell me what you think?

Thanks!

I think it looks nice, but I sharp edge highlight a lot of the tracks and moving parts in bright silver to really sell it. Moving parts will either resist rust because of wear or lock up with too much, since rust expands metal.

Thanks! I do plan on edging the tracks in a bit of metal. Still working through the rust and grime atm.

I'd saying you're selling quite well. It's a beautiful paintjob.

As previously said, a few silver highlights where the rust has been scraped off would be a nice a touch. You could also drybrush some browns and blacks around the barrel if you wanted to dirty it up a bit more.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

looking good so far. i think it (the rust) needs a darker brown. if you look in my gallery, i have a bunch of pics of construction vehicles which might help (link below).

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

Thanks! Checked out your work in your gallery and love it. Our Nurgly guys should totally hang out. What do you like for a rust brown?

The rust is perfect to be honest!

But If you are going for realism, Perhaps adding variations on rust is the key. There are many colors, types, and textures of rust

Check out some tanks in the (Rust Dioramas)

If you notice, there is water damage, pain chip, and rust streaks, and rust is not one color all over but has color variations.

It looks complicated but it is not hard to do.
For example
It is just Iron paint brushed with "magic" aghm(Vinegar) solution for Iron to rust.

or Strait up painting the texture without any tricks

I have tried making my own rust paint from rust for me tanks. (Warning, rust dust is super fine, mask is a must)

cheers
I used both paints & MIG weathering pigments. the dark brown 'base' is either GW 'scorched brown' (now oop) or MIG 'old rust'. Rust pigments usually come in three tones: 'old' = very dark brown; 'new' = bright orange'; & 'medium' = somewhere between the 2.
On my landraider, after a coating of fine basing sand, i sprayed it 'red oxide' primer from Halfords. In hindsight, the sand was too coarse & the red oxide too bright.
Note that i've noticed that in real life, new rust forms where pools of water would form after rain or in streaks from condensation through the night. So now i base with a dark brown, wash with the medium rust (pigment + water) & fix it after rubbing back with a brush, q-tip or even my finger, and then repeat with the new rust but being a bit more selective.
Hope that helps.
