Random question, but why do the indomitus models have so many keys on them?

They are meant to be warriors not Hotel Managers :-/

Anyone know of the significance of these tiny details which I find hard to paint!

If you ever play with "that guy" remember this :
"there may be times when you are not sure exactly how to resolve a situation that has come up during play. When this happens, have a quick chat with your opponent and apply the solution that makes the most sense to both of you (or seems the most fun!), If no single solution presents itself, you and your opponent should roll off, and whoever rolls the highest gets to choose what happens." Symbolically speaking, the holding of keys is usually an indication that the person holds some position related to security. A warden or grounds keeper. But it can go deeper, a holder of keys is also someone with access to relics, rituals or secret knowledge. (Keep that in mind if you play Dark Angels).

(There's a joke in there somewhere about gatekeeping in the 40k community).

Seals, keys, icons - marines are often covered in religious and other symbolic elements to their armour and even bodies.

I'd guess it started with Ezekiel (The Holder of the Keys) and branched out from there. The new Primaris sculpt for Tiggy has a keyring too.

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.

Because the time the SM codex rolls around they will have some kind of rules, because that's how GW roll nowadays. Every... Minute... Detail... on a mini MUST have rules, it cannot be decoration. Nope. Not at all.
